Alternative Press is an American music magazine based in Cleveland, Ohio. It generally provides readers with band interviews, photos, information on upcoming releases, and music charts. It was founded in 1985 by Mike Shea, who is the current president.^[1]

Katherine Poecze is the general manager. Jason Pettigrew is editor in chief and Scott Heisel is music editor.^[1]

[edit] Beginnings

The first issue of Alternative Press was simply a photocopied fanzine, distributed at concerts in Cleveland beginning in June 1985 by AP's founder, Mike Shea, who disliked the music then broadcast on radio stations and believed that bands playing underground music should be given more media coverage "all in the same spot", he said.

Shea began working on his first issue in his mom's house in Aurora, Ohio. Shea and a friend, Jimmy Kosicki, targeted the Cleveland neighborhood of Coventry.^[2] "I took my high school newspaper from Aurora High that looked nice and clean and offset print. I'd walk into these flower shops and Hallmark shops, and I'd say 'We're going to put out and entertainment publication, and it's going to be for kids and [the ad is] only $25.' And they'd look at my high school newspaper and say, 'It's really professional...' That's how we got enough money to make the first issue."^[3]

Financial problems plagued AP in its early years. Of the fledgling magazine's struggles in 1986, Shea said: "After the last few punk concerts we promoted that year failed to make any money to help finance the magazine, I had to start begging my mom for money to keep AP going: $1,500 here, $2,500 there. My mom was super-supportive of the whole endeavor, and she seemed to enjoy having a bunch of punkers over at all hours of the night putting together issues on her dining-room table and getting spray mount all over her nice tablecloths and on the carpeting, which resulted in our socks getting pulled off as we walked over it." However, by the end of 1986, publication had ceased due to its financial problems, not resuming until the spring of 1988.

[edit] Growth in the 1990s

With the growth of alternative rock in the early 1990s, circulation began to increase. AP's covers included bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and Soundgarden, prior to each band's mainstream success.

By 1994, the magazine was doing cover stories on Beastie Boys, Henry Rollins and Love And Rockets. Norman Wonderly, now the publisher, was credited by Shea as having "made most of these happen and the more Norman got what he wanted, the more artists wanted their cover shoots to look the way Norman wanted, and so on. It wasn’t always easy; there were some nasty phone calls exchanged between everyone, and there was always some publicist who wanted to give us one half-hour of shoot time so the artist could go shopping or some stupid thing. Did we sometimes protest too much? Maybe, but we were up against a lot; we were underfinanced and still underappreciated in some corners of the music business, so we had to fight scrappily and mean when it was called for. Nobody takes you seriously unless you take yourself seriously, and that’s what Norman brings to his position to this day."

At the time of its 20th anniversary in 2005, AP had grown to an average size of 112 pages an issue and now averages between 198 to 220-plus pages a month.

The magazine's monthly columns include "The AP Poll", "In The Studio", "AP&R (Unsigned bands of the month)", "Chalkboard Confessional", "Musician Of The Month", "My Favorite Gear", "Next Exit", "Gig Bag", "1000 Words", "Beauty And The Band", and "10 Essential."

The magazine has also put its name on a radio show aired on XM Radio, a podcast featuring in-depth discussions on various topics with people such as Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz and Kevin Lyman, and a compilation CD. AP is a major sponsor of Warped Tour, the Taste of Chaos tour, and has started its own, "The AP Tour."

For its 25th anniversary in 2010, The Starting Line played and spoke about their holiday concert last year. They premiered their newest single, Luck, as well.

The magazine's CEO/Founder is Mike Shea, with Katherine Poecze as the General Manager. The company currently resides in Cleveland, Ohio.^[4]

Audrey Lynn Kitching (born July 26 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American blogger, model,^[1][2] and fashion designer.^[3][4] She was discovered at the age of 14.^[5] Kitching has been declared simultaneously a "fashion forward female" and "fashion disaster" by Cosmopolitan,^[6] an "It Kid" and "princess of pop culture website Buzznet" by Nylon,^[7] "weekend role model" by Glamour,^[8] a fashion icon by Taiwanese magazine Part Time ^[9], and a social media queen by Greek magazine Soul.^[3] She has created three clothing lines: Tokyolux, Coco de Coeur, and Lazybones Vintage.^[5]

Kitching began her modeling career at the age of 14 after being discovered at a hair salon, initially appearing in newspaper ads. After graduating from high school, she frequently modeled for aspiring photographer friends, which led to her blogging career after she started posting these images online.^[5] In a Metromix profile of "Style Why-Cons", she is credited with influencing the fashion industry and altering standards of beauty.^[10] A spokesmodel for Jared Gold,^[11] she made an appearance on the May 22, 2008 episode of Good Things Utah to show off his designs.^[12] Additionally, she was featured in Gold's Czarina runway event.^[13] In March 2008, she was chosen to appear in a national Peta2 "Fur Is Dead" campaign.^[14] From May 3 to August 31, 2008, Kitching was included among Glenn Kaino's Uberstars exhibit at The Andy Warhol Museum, a 21st century take on Andy Warhol's Superstars.^[15][16] Kitching frequently works as not only model, but also art director for her photo shoots.^[5]

Kitching is the style editor for social media and pop culture website Buzznet, and has worked with the company for over 6 years after they took notice of her LiveJournal blog.^[5] In June 2010, she was chosen by JC Penney as one of five "haulers" to receive $1,000 of merchandise in exchange for blog promotion.^[1] She is currently working on a magazine for the iPad on "how to live a high fashion lifestyle but on a very low budget".^[5] Similarly, as a lifestyle blogger for GoBankingRates.com, she writes tips on budgeting in regards to fashion and youth culture.^[17]

In 2010, Kitching was one of the designers chosen to work with H&M for Designers Against AIDS.^[3][18] Inspired by clothing Kitching made for her own shoots, she has created three clothing lines - including Tokyolux (based on her current sense of style), Coco de Coeur (inspired by days spent at skate parks in her youth), and Lazybones Vintage (a collaboration with her boyfriend).^[5][19]

Kitching appeared as herself in 2008's movie version of Forever Plaid.^[20][21] In 2009, she appeared on Germany's Next Topmodel.^[22] She is currently working on publishing a personal diary, set for release in the spring of 2012.^[5]

'Never Shout Never is an American rock band, formed in Joplin, Missouri in 2007. The band has released three albums and six extended plays.

Christopher Drew Ingle began making music as Never Shout Never in September 2005. His first exposure came through the internet, where he achieved success on MySpace before issuing the extended play, The Yippee Ep on July 29, 2008.^[1] On July 30, 2008, he was featured on TRL, where he performed his single "Bigcitydreams."^[2] He toured with Hellogoodbye and Ace Enders in the fall of 2008.^[3]

As of November 17, 2008, the official spelling of Ingle's alias became NeverShoutNever! Although in 2008, the band had a slight name change and excluded the "!" from Nevershoutnever! To make ' Never Shout Never" (example song: Awful) It had previously been listed as Never Shout Never on iTunes and his management company's site.^[4] An official statement regarding the reason behind the spelling change has not been made available.

Never Shout Never started touring with The Ready Set, The Honorary Title, and The Bigger Lights in late February 2009^[5] and then toured with bands such as Forever the Sickest Kids, The Cab, We the Kings, and Mercy Mercedes, among others in spring 2009 as part of The Bamboozle Roadshow 2009.^[6] He played at both The Bamboozle Left 2009^[7] and The Bamboozle 2009.^[8]

The Summer was released on June 23, 2009. The first single off the EP, titled "Happy," was released on iTunes on March 3, 2009.^[9] he performs at warped tour all over the country.

It was announced on May 29, 2009, that Ingle had signed to Warner Bros. Records, ending a major-label bidding war.^[10] As part of the deal, Ingle will run and make releases on his own imprint label, Loveway Records.^[11]

The debut album from Never Shout Never, What Is Love?, was produced by Butch Walker and released in January 2010.^[12][13] Never Shout Never's second full length album, Harmony, was released in August of the same year.

In November 2010, Never Shout Never co-headlined the Harmony Tour, where they had fans gather can foods to help those in need. As a gift to the fans, Never Shout Never and The Maine released a live split EP. As of December 21, 2010, the split EP is available for free download on Never Shout Never's website.

The band's hometown, Joplin, Missouri, was destroyed by a tornado on May 22, 2011. Following the destruction, Christofer began a relief fund with United Way to raise $1 million for his hometown.^[14] To raise awareness about the devastation of Joplin, Christofer took video footage of the destruction and posted it on YouTube on June 1, 2011. The video, which features the song "Time Travel", encouraged viewers to donate to the relief of the town via his United Way fund.^[15]

Never Shout Never's third full-length album, Time Travel was released on September 20, 2011.^[16]

Never Shout Never will be doing another US tour in April 2012 with Koji, Kurt Travis and Renee and the Translators. The band said to be returning to Europe in the summer, and they said to be returning to Brazil, Argentina and Chile later on in 2012. Their fourth album, Good Times, is set to be released in fall 2012.
