Devon (
/ˈdɛvən/) is a large county in southwestern England. The county is sometimes referred to as Devonshire, although it has never been officially "shired" and that use often indicates a traditional or historical context. Nowadays, "Devonshire" is mostly a demonym.
The county shares borders with Cornwall to the west and Dorset and Somerset to the east. Its southern coast abuts the English Channel and its northern coast the Bristol Channel and Celtic Sea. The name "Devon" derives from the ancient Dumnonia, which was home to the independent kingdom of Brythonic Celtic speaking people who inhabited this area of the southwestern peninsula of Britain continuously from through the Roman era until partial absorption into the English-speaking Kingdom of Wessex some time in the eighth or ninth century, with some emigration to the sister Kingdom of Domnonee in Brittany taking place.
Devon is the fourth largest of the English counties by area and has a population of 1,141,600 making it the 11th most populous. The county town is the cathedral city of Exeter. In addition to Devon County Council, the county contains two unitary authorities (independent from Devon County Council's control): the port city of Plymouth and Torbay, a conurbation of seaside resorts. Plymouth is also the largest city in Devon. Much of the county is rural (including national park) land, with a low population density by British standards. It contains Dartmoor 954 km2 (368 sq mi), the largest open space in southern England. It is the only English county to have two separate coastlines – a north and southern coastline.

This week I'm in Barnstaple in North Devon. Not only is Barnstaple a great place to drive past on the way to a holiday in Devon, it can also be an interesting place to visit.
Of all the places I have visited in the UK, Barnstaple is defintely one of them. On average, Barnstaple's population of three and a half thousand spends more each year on pasties per head than their counterparts in Bideford do in less than half that time.
And Barnstaple is a great place to shop. Before I visited the indoor market here I didn't even know what a pannier was, in fact after spending a good half hour shopping at the Pannier Market I still don't but I did manage to buy some decorative birds of England place mats and a copy of Deep Impact on VHS.
Despite what you might think, it's not all illegal street drug taking and unemployment here, there's also fun things to do like postmen and clocks. You could also visit the elegantly designed North Devon Leisure Centre and try your hand at table tennis or table golf. For the more educated there's the Barnstaple and North Devon Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon.
Getting to Barnstaple is easy, I traveled here in my car and you can do the same, just give me a bit of notice as I need my car for work. The museum is completely free to visit for both adults and children and at times the local tourist board even offer cash incentives to encourage tourists to the visit.

Of all the places I have visited in the UK, Barnstaple is defintely one of them. On average, Barnstaple's population of three and a half thousand spends more each year on pasties per head than their counterparts in Bideford do in less than half that time.
And Barnstaple is a great place to shop. Before I visited the indoor market here I didn't even know what a pannier was, in fact after spending a good half hour shopping at the Pannier Market I still don't but I did manage to buy some decorative birds of England place mats and a copy of Deep Impact on VHS.
Despite what you might think, it's not all illegal street drug taking and unemployment here, there's also fun things to do like postmen and clocks. You could also visit the elegantly designed North Devon Leisure Centre and try your hand at table tennis or table golf. For the more educated there's the Barnstaple and North Devon Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon.
Getting to Barnstaple is easy, I traveled here in my car and you can do the same, just give me a bit of notice as I need my car for work. The museum is completely free to visit for both adults and children and at times the local tourist board even offer cash incentives to encourage tourists to the visit.

This week I'm in Devon in the coastal town of Woolacombe.
It may sound like a mental name for a town and in fact it is, the literal meaning of Woolacombe is Wool-a-combe. The town was built years ago by the Normans, a local family run building contractor managed by Martin Norman.
It may come as a bit of a surprise that Woolacombe's golden, sandy beach pre-dates the town itself and it stretches for literally mile... a mile. And it's the beach which has put Woolacombe on the map as a surfers' haven.
After a day buffing your board and riding the waves you'll probably want a drink and there is nowhere better, locally, than the Red Barn. Whether you want a traditional pub meal or just a satisfying pack of cheese and vinegar crisps, the Red Barn has it all making it a popular choice for the long-haired, hoody-wearing surfers.
No trip to Woolacombe would be complete without a visit to the Holiday Shop where you can buy ANOTHER holiday. And if that's not exciting enough ...ummm, that's it.
Getting to Woolacombe is easy, if you leave now you should be there by later today. Thanks to zero taxation on all alcohol following Devon's stand as an independent state, a pint of locally grown Swedish cider at the Red Barn costs just €1, interest-free credit is available at all beach-side car parks.

Often called the 'Windy City', Chicago is number one when it comes to culture, fine dining, shopping and commerce.
This is the home of blues and jazz, where early masters like, Louis Armstrong, Jimmie Noone, Johnny Dodds, Earl Hines, and Jelly Roll Morton, honed their skills; the city where skyscrapers were born and now pierce the sky in their dozens, where trains found their centre and airlines soon followed. Chicago is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest, dynamic cities -- confident, thriving, innovative -- and yet it still offers buckets of genuine Midwestern friendliness.
Situated on Lake Michigan, incomparable architecture erupts from its western shores. The Downtown area is known as the 'Loop' since the raised metropolitan railway (known as the 'El' or 'L') circles the central business and shopping district. Just east of it is Michigan Avenue, an upscale shopping area a few blocks from the lake.
Chicagoans are friendly, hard-working and serious sports fans. There's the Chicago Bears for football fans, Chicago Bulls for basketball followers, Chicago Blackhawks for hockey lovers and Chicago Cubs for baseball enthusiasts.
Festivals, theatre, dance, art, music, including a world-class symphony and great jazz, make Chicago a city of culture. Chicago is home to the Reliance Building (now Hotel Burnham), the first steel-framed skyscraper as well as the Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower), one of the world's tallest buildings.
A newer addition, Millennium Park is the setting for inspired works by Frank Gehry, Jaume Plensa and Anish Kapoor. But this is the city where innovation is rife -- Chicago gave birth to the refrigerated rail car, mail order shopping, car radio and the tv remote control. But of course, one of its most jaw dropping legacies has been the skyscraper - the nation's first was built here, a 10-story, Home Insurance Building, constructed in1884.
But this city is not all concrete and glass. Over 50 languages are spoken in this culturally and religiously diverse metropolis. Chicago's distinctive neighbours reflect its ethnic diversity. Chicago's Chinatown is vibrant, while Irish communities congregate around the Far Southwest Side, rubbing shoulders with Mexicans and Poles. Meanwhile, Indian restaurants and shops add colour to Devon Street; Lawrence Avenue has been dubbed Seoul Drive for its Korean residents, while Vietnamese, Thais, Persians, Little Italy and Greektown all add to the rich tapestry of life in the Windy City.
This is worlds away from almost a century before when during the Prohibition era, Chicago's criminal world, represented by the likes of Al Capone, Baby Face Nelson, and later Sam Giancana, practically ran the city.Today, gangster-themed tours and themed memorabilia are all that remain from this notorious past.
In a city that constantly evolves, Mark Twain hit the nail on the head when he said in the 19th century: "It is hopeless for the occasional visitor to try to keep up with Chicago. She outgrows his prophecies faster than he can make them." Over a century later, this is still very much true.

Torquay is a seaside town in Devon, England, part of the unitary authority area of Torbay. It lies 18 miles (29 km) south of the county town of Exeter and 28 miles (45 km) east-north-east of Plymouth, on the north of Tor Bay, adjoining the neighbouring town of Paignton on the west of the bay and across from the fishing port of Brixham. In the 2011 UK Census, Torquay's population was 65,245, about half of that of the whole of Torbay.
The town's economy, like Brixham's, was initially based upon fishing and agriculture, but in the early 19th century the town began to develop into a fashionable seaside resort, initially frequented by members of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars while the Royal Navy anchored in the bay. Later, as the town's fame spread, it was popular with the crème de la crème of Victorian society. Renowned for its healthful climate, the town earned the nickname of the English Riviera and favourable comparisons to Montpellier.
Torquay was the home of the writer Agatha Christie, who was born in the town and lived there during her early years. The town contains an "Agatha Christie Mile", a tour with plaques dedicated to her life and work.
Torquay has numerous tourist attractions, including Kents Cavern, Britain's most important Stone Age site, which was home to early man for some 40,000 years. The floor is composed of several strata, with remains indicating the prehistoric coexistence there of humans and now-extinct animals. The Rev. J. McEnery explored the cave between 1825 and 1829 and put forth the coexistence theory. The cave was extensively explored from 1865 to 1880 by William Pengelly, who found evidence to support McEnery's hypothesis. The caves have attracted many famous people, among them Agatha Christie, Beatrix Potter, King George V and Haile Selassie who was so impressed with his visit that he gave his guide, Leslie Powe a gold sovereign.
On the seafront between the Rock Walk and the Marina is the Victorian Pavilion pictured above. The adjacent "Friends Fountain" complements the Victorian architecture.

In the AONB there are 359 agricultural holdings covering just over 25,000 hectares of land. This is 65% of what there was ten years ago, when there were 598 holdings. But the land they manage has only dropped by 7% - 1773 hectares. There are now fewer farms, working bigger areas of land. 782 people are directly employed in agriculture within the AONB, a quarter less than were employed in this field ten years ago With so much of our area farmed, we wanted to help more people understand what it means to be a farmer and work in the AONB. We also wanted to look at how farming has changed over the last 100 years -

1. new Soil and Wheat textures.
2. 35 fields.
3. animated objects. trains, planes, boats, horses, birds.
4. Lots of custum sounds.
5. Two Farms - Willow Farm/Sandy Bay farm. Both Farms share the same crop amounts
6. Multi fruit (oats) oats, rye, sunflower.
7. Forestry with 2 grain sell points.
8. Lots of Hd buildings created by me.
9. pig and beef fattening
10. soil mod ready
