Christopher Dylan "Chris" Judd (born 8 September 1983) is a professional Australian rules footballer and current captain of the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).

Widely regarded as one of the best footballers currently in the AFL,^[1] Judd has twice won the league's highest individual honour, the Brownlow Medal, and is a dual Leigh Matthews Trophy winner as the AFL Players Association most valuable player, and he is a premiership captain, having captained the West Coast Eagles to the 2006 AFL Premiership. Consistently recognised as one of the game's premier midfielders,^[1] Judd has been selected in the All-Australian team six times, including as captain in 2008. At a representative level, he played for Australia in the 2002 International Rules Series and for Victoria in the AFL Hall of Fame Tribute Match in 2008.

Judd is recognised as a great at two clubs: West Coast and his current club Carlton. During his 134 games with West Coast he captained the club for two seasons and won two Club Champion Awards. After returning to Melbourne to captain the Carlton Football Club, Judd won the John Nicholls Medal as the club's Best and Fairest three times, and become just one of four players in AFL history to win a Brownlow Medal at more than one club.^[2]

Early life[link]

Chris Judd was born in Melbourne to Andrew Judd and Lisa Engel.^[3] Raised in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, where he played for the East Sandringham Junior Football Club^[4] before he attended Caulfield Grammar School.^[5] Judd was an all round sportsman and junior track and field star and solid cricket player. At Caulfield Grammar, he began to focus on Australian rules football and later captained the school's First team. Judd attained an ENTER score of 96.20 on his Victorian Certificate of Education.^[6]

Judd was a graduate of the 2000 AIS/AFL Academy and participated in the 2000 AFL National Under 18 Championships, although due to his young age at 17, he was too young to be drafted by an AFL club. He played TAC Cup football with the Sandringham Dragons through to 2001.

At the 2001 AFL National Under 18 Championships, Judd was named captain of the Vic Metro team, despite chronic shoulder problems.^[7] Although he missed the 2001 AFL Draft Camp, his performances at the state championships made him an obvious standout to recruiters and was tipped to be picked high in the 2001 AFL Draft. Judd was taken by West Coast with its priority draft pick (No. 3 overall) in what was later to be called the "super draft" due to the standout quality of the players to have developed from that draft year.

Judd played only one WAFL match ^[8] before making his debut for West Coast in Round 2, 2002. He had an impressive debut season, winning the AFLPA Best First Year Player Award. In his second season, he alternated between the midfield and forward line, and with several dominant performances, he finished runner up in the club best and fairest. Judd was appointed as one of the Eagles' four vice-captains, prior to the commencement of the 2004 season.

2004 was Judd's breakthrough season, in which he successfully combined with captain Ben Cousins, midfielder Daniel Kerr and ruckman Dean Cox in the Eagles' midfield. Judd averaged 22 disposals and kicked 24 goals for the season and became West Coast's first Brownlow medallist, polling 30 votes to finish seven ahead of runner-up Mark Ricciuto. Additionally, he was named to his first All Australian Team as a wingman, and won the Eagles' Club Champion award for the first time. In 2005, Judd again averaged 22 disposals and was runner-up to Cousins as Club Champion; he kicked the Goal of the Year, and won the Norm Smith Medal in West Coast's four point loss to Sydney in the 2005 AFL Grand Final.

On 1 March 2006, Judd was named captain of the club, succeeding Ben Cousins, who stepped down from the role for disciplinary reasons.^[9] As captain, he led the Eagles to a one-point victory against Sydney in the 2006 AFL Grand Final, winning his only AFL Premiership medallion. Additionally, Judd won his second club best and fairest award, his second All-Australian selection and the Leigh Matthews Trophy as the AFL Players Association's Most Valuable Player.

Judd's strong form continued into 2007, and he polled Brownlow votes in each of his first eight games for the season. However, as the year progressed, Judd was hampered by a chronic groin injury, which sidelined him for several weeks, and restricted his performance in the games he did play. He was forced to play off the bench and in the forward line often, and was rested for several games in anticipation of playing in the finals series.

Departure from West Coast Eagles[link]

On 16 September 2007, two days after West Coast's semi-final elimination by Collingwood, it was announced that Judd had left West Coast and would be requesting a trade to a club in Victoria.^[10] He notified West Coast coach John Worsfold and CEO Trevor Nisbett of his intentions earlier that day.^[11][12] As arguably the most talented player in the competition, his departure created much attention and speculation among the Melbourne-based clubs, the media and the football community.

In the weeks following the announcement of his departure, Chris Judd met with four clubs: Essendon, Melbourne, Collingwood and Carlton.^[13] Judd's management informed Melbourne that Judd was surprised with their presentation, but felt that their Junction Oval training facilities were "an issue". On 2 October 2007, Judd announced that his preferred club was Carlton. Carlton was initially favoured as most likely to secure the services of Judd, because the club held two early draft picks which could be used in negotiations with West Coast.^[14] On 11 October 2007, Judd was officially traded to Carlton along with a third round selection in the 2007 AFL Draft (No. 46 overall) for Carlton's first and second round selections (No. 3 and 20) and Josh Kennedy, who was reluctant to leave Carlton.^[15] Judd was subsequently given the #5 guernsey vacated by the trade of Kennedy.^[16]

During the off-season, Judd was awarded the captaincy of the club entering into his first season with the Blues. His first game in navy blue was a Friday afternoon practice match on 7 March 2008 against the Western Bulldogs at MC Labour Park, with his presence attracting 12,000 fans; Judd scored a goal and had 20 touches.^[17]

Judd began playing with Carlton from the first round. His return match against West Coast at Subiaco Oval in Round 7 was widely anticipated in the media, and Carlton won by 37 points.^[18] Judd played 21 of the 22 home-and-away games through the season was named All-Australian captain and ruck rover – his third All-Australian selection, and first as captain – and won the John Nicholls Medal for the best and fairest of the Carlton Football Club. He also represented the Victorian team the following week for the Hall of Fame Tribute Match. Judd again won the John Nicholls Medal and All-Australian selection in 2009.

Judd had a controversial end to his 2009 season. In Carlton's elimination final loss to Brisbane, Judd was cited by the Match Review Panel for misconduct against Michael Rischitelli, after Judd made unnecessary contact near Rischitelli's eyes. The media initially reported the case as eye-gouging, and Judd created a bigger controversy when he stated that his intention was not to eye-gouge, but to push a pressure point behind Rischitelli's ear. Judd later said that his comment was intended as dry humor, but it was misinterpreted as genuine and prompted condemnation from many sources, from sports commentators to martial arts experts. After contesting the charge and appealing the penalty at the AFL Tribunal, Judd was suspended for three weeks. In another deadpan statement after the hearing, he stated "I've since watched a couple of Steven Seagal movies and realised that pressure points are no laughing matter," but he also acknowledged his own "stupidity" in the controversy.^[19][20] Then, his leadership was called into question when the team misbehaved during an organised Christmas booze cruise, which saw suspensions to teammates Andrew Walker, Eddie Betts and Ryan Houlihan.^[21]

After missing the opening three rounds of the 2010 season due to the "pressure point" incident, Judd three Brownlow votes in each of his first five matches for the season, going on to win his second Brownlow Medal with 30 votes, four ahead of 2009 Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett, Jr.. He became the thirteenth VFL/AFL player to win the Brownlow more than once, the fourth VFL/AFL player to win the Brownlow at two different clubs (West Coast and Carlton), and the first VFL/AFL player to twice poll thirty or more votes in a season.^[22] Judd also won his fifth All-Australian selection, being named on the interchange bench, and his third consecutive John Nicholls Medal, becoming the only player other than Nicholls to win the Carlton best and fairest award three times in a row.^[23]

In 2011, Judd led Carlton to its best season in a decade, helping the team finish 5th at the end of the season, and to record its first finals victory since 2001. He was awarded the Leigh Matthews Trophy for the second time in his career, as well as the AFLPA's Best Captain Award for the first time.^[24] He was named vice-captain and ruck-rover of the All-Australian team, his fourth consecutive selection.^[25][26] He had entered the Brownlow Medal count as an unbackable favourite, with TAB Sportsbet electing to pay out early after Round 20, but he ultimately finished fifth.^[27] He played his 200th AFL game during the season.

Media appearances[link]

Towards the end of 2003, Judd began writing a column on the West Coast Eagles official website called "Juddy's Jibe". Some of his opinions presented in these columns prompted extensive media commentary, such as his view that footballers should not be role models. Throughout the 2006 season, the column was also published in Melbourne newspaper The Age, where Judd spoke about issues such as global warming, terrorism, superficiality in the mass media, world peace and James Surowiecki's book The Wisdom of Crowds.

In 2009, he featured in the official advertisement for the AFL, receiving a mark from Aaron Davey on a Basketball court and then sprinting in front of a stampede of horses on a horse racing track before handballing to Adam Goodes.

Personal life[link]

Judd is currently studying for a Master of Business Administration degree, and has previously completed university courses in media studies and corporate governance.^[34] Judd owned a Toyota Prius hybrid car and switched to "green power" at his former Perth house.^[35] He is also a registered organ donor.^[36] He is currently an environmental ambassador for Visy^[37] and drives the Hyundai i30.^[38]

On 31 December 2010, Judd married speech pathologist and model Rebecca Twigley.^[39] They have a son, Oscar Dylan, born 26 July 2011.^[40] On the night of Judd's 2004 Brownlow win, Twigley wore a very revealing red dress which caused national comment.^[41]

Denis Pagan (born 24 September 1947) is a former Australian rules football coach and player in the VFL/AFL. He is current coach of Northern Knights in TAC Cup.

Playing career[link]

Pagan played 120 games for the North Melbourne Football Club between 1967 and 1974, kicking 5 goals, mainly due to his permanent spot as a hard-nosed defender in the back pocket. He represented Victoria in interstate matches in 1971.

After the Grand Final loss to Richmond in 1974, Pagan was pushed out by Barassi. Although Pagan's dwindling form and the club's reassessment of its squad in the aftermath of 1974 loss, Pagan then moved back to his original roots (excepting Carlton, where Barassi expelled him in 1966) to South Melbourne for two seasons, 1975–1976, playing 23 games and kicking 0 goals. However, these events did not deter Pagan from his dedication to the North Melbourne football club, despite Barassi's authoritative coaching style.

Coaching career[link]

North Melbourne Football Club[link]

Pagan first came to North Melbourne in 1993 without any Australian Football League coaching experience, and at 45 years of age, made his AFL coaching debut at a late age. Pagan had earlier taken North Melbourne Under 19s to 5 Premierships during the late 1980s and early 1990s, before he took the Essendon Football Club reserves to a premiership in 1992. Given Pagan's amazing level of success at the lower levels, it was only a matter of time before Pagan was offered a senior appointment.

He had an immediate impact at the Kangaroos, taking the side to premierships in 1996 and 1999.

He was known for pioneering a successful tactic which was termed "Pagan's Paddock", based around his key forwards Wayne Carey and John Longmire. The coaching strategy involved moving all forwards out of the 50-metre arc and midfielders bombing the ball into empty space. The key forwards would run with the flight of the ball to take a mark or running goal.

By the end of his term at North Melbourne, he had established an impeccable reputation as a senior AFL coach and the longest serving coach in the club's history. His worst season at North Melbourne was 2001, when the club missed the finals for the only time during his 10-year term at the club.

Pagan quit the North Melbourne Football Club at the end of the 2002 season, despite the team far-exceeding all expectations in finishing 7th [1]), which was never expected after Wayne Carey left the club at the beginning of the year after his much-publicised affair. At the end of 2002 he was poached by then Carlton President John Elliott to take up a new job at the Carlton Football Club.

Carlton Football Club[link]

At the end of 2002, Pagan was appointed coach of the Carlton Football Club, replacing Wayne Brittain, under whom Carlton had won the wooden spoon in 2002; Brittain had a year remaining on his contract, and was paid out by the club. Pagan made an immediate impact at the club by terminating the contracts of many senior players to rebuild the side. In 2003, Carlton had another unsuccessful season, finishing fifteenth. Employing a recycled player policy for the 2004 season, Pagan led Carlton to eleventh, which was Carlton's highest placing under Pagan, and carried this into a pre-season premiership in the 2005 Wizard Cup. However, this proved to be a false dawn, and Pagan led Carlton to consecutive wooden spoons in 2005 and 2006.

He had often been criticised for the lack of performance at Carlton during a time of financial crisis, and his lucrative 3 year incentive based contract, although the aftermath of Carlton's salary cap scandal in 2002 was a factor in the club not performing well under Pagan. He had also come under fire for what some believe to be a one-dimensional forward-line structure, revolving too predictably around star forward Brendan Fevola and neglecting other forwards to the team's detriment. After much controversy and speculation over him leading the side to the 2006 wooden spoon, there were talks that he may be sacked; however, it was decided to extend his contract until the end of the 2008 season.

Carlton did not improve much in 2007, finishing fifteenth. Between Rounds 12 and 16, Carlton suffered five consecutive heavy defeats, the last of which was a 117 point belting at the hands of the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba, in which Lions' full-forward Jonathan Brown kicked a club record 10 goals. It would prove to be the nail in the coffin for Pagan and his job, and he was sacked on 23 July 2007. He was not bitter at the club's decision, and wanted to go on record that he would never have quit as the coach of the Carlton Football Club. Pagan was replaced by assistant coach Brett Ratten as caretaker coach for the reminder of the 2007 season, who was eventually appointed full-time coach of Carlton. Pagan had a year to go on his contract which was paid out in full by the club. Pagan later stated in the Herald Sun newspaper that coaching Carlton was "the worst job he's ever had".

Post coaching career[link]

In 2008, Pagan became a board member for North Melbourne however after the 2008 season he left the position.

Stephen Milne (born 8 March 1980) is a professional footballer for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).

AFL career[link]

Milne was recruited to the St Kilda Football Club from the Essendon reserves and placed on St Kildas Rookie List after playing for the Dandenong Stingrays and Noble Park in the late 1990s. Milne holds a record of 11 goals playing for Noble Park against Kwinana in 1996.^{[citation needed]}Milne began his carer in the Victorian Footall league.

St Kilda Football Club[link]

2001 season: AFL debut[link]

Milne was elevated to St Kilda's primary list from the club's rookie list prior to the start of the 2001 season. He played his first official AFL game in 2001 against Port Adelaide in Round 4.

2002: Leading goalkicker[link]

He was St Kilda's leading goalkicker in 2002, kicking 50 goals from 21 matches in the 2002 AFL Premiership Season.^[2]

2004 - 2007[link]

Milne played in St Kilda’s 2004 Wizard Home Loans Cup winning side, the club's second pre-season cup win.^[3]

Later in 2004 Milne and team mate Leigh Montagna were the at the centre of a police investigation of the rape of a woman.^[4] No charges were laid, however in June 2010 a former detective who was the lead detective in the case made claims that the case collapsed under internal pressure from within the Victorian police force and powerful club backers as well as another detective alleging the cost of the case was a factor.^[5][6][7]

In the 2005 AFL Premiership Season, Milne again kicked 50 goals or more in a season. In the final round of the 2005 season, against the Brisbane Lions, he had 15 kicks and kicked a personal best 11 goals in the Saints 139 point win. He finished with 61 goals from 24 matches for the season.^[2]

2008 season[link]

Milne played in St Kilda’s 2008 National Australia Bank Cup winning side, the club's third pre-season cup win. Milne kicked three of St Kildas nine goals in the Final.^[8][9]

In 2008, during a game against Fremantle at Subiaco, he kicked three goals after a head clash. He was driven back from Perth with St Kilda medical staff to avoid the risk of further damage and arrived in Melbourne on the Thursday following the game. Despite this he was named to play in the game on the following Sunday which was Robert Harvey's tribute game against Adelaide. He kicked two goals in a 20 possession game.^{[citation needed]}

In the 2008 AFL Premiership Season, Milne again kicked 50 goals or more in a season. He finished with 60 goals from 24 matches.

2009: Grand finalist[link]

Milne played in 20 of 22 matches in the 2009 home and away rounds in which St Kilda qualified in first position for the 2009 AFL Finals Series, winning the club’s third minor premiership.^[10]

St Kilda qualified for the 2009 AFL Grand Final after its qualifying and preliminary finals wins. Milne played in the grand final when St Kilda were defeated by Geelong by 12 points.

2010: Leading goalkicker and grand finalist[link]

On 9 April 2010, St Kilda played Collingwood in a Round 3 match. During the quarter time break, words were exchanged between Milne and the Collingwood coach, Mick Malthouse, the focus of which in the media was an alleged comment Malthouse made calling Milne a 'rapist'.^[11] In a statement released by Collingwood, Malthouse apologised for his comments for which he was also fined $7500 by the AFL.^[12][13] Milne also stated that some comments he made to an opposition coach were inappropriate.^[12][14]

Under coach Ross Lyon, he has continued to develop his forward defensive skills and setting up play in addition to his ability to score goals.

Milne kicked his 400th career goal on 4 June 2010, in Round 11 against Richmond, scoring five goals for the game.^[15][16]

Mine played his 200th game the following week on 13 June 2010, in Round 12 against Fremantle, scoring four goals for the game.^[17]

He received three Goal Of The Year nominations in 2010 in Rounds 5, 11 and 12.

St Kilda Football Club qualified for the 2010 AFL finals series in third position and won through to the 2010 Grand Final after wins over Geelong in the qualifying finals and Western Bulldogs in the preliminary finals.

Milne played in the 2010 AFL Grand Final in which he kicked two of St Kilda 10 goals for the game against Collingwood, which ended in a draw, 10. 8. (68) to 9. 14. (68). Milne was also unlucky in the final 2 minutes of the last quarter were the ball bounced away froml him, 10 metres out from goal, for a point to tie the game.

He was St Kilda's leading goalkicker in 2010 with 55 goals for the season prior to the 2010 AFL Grand Final Replay.

2011: Leading goalkicker and Docklands' record[link]

In St Kilda's Round 21 home game against the Magpies, Milne became the first player in the history of the league to kick 300 goals at Docklands Stadium. He overtook the previous record of 299 set by former Essendon player Matthew Lloyd. Milne kicked the record-breaking goal in the final quarter.^[1] He has also played the most games of any current AFL player at the venue, with 124 (as of 10 September 2011). He is currently fifth on St Kilda's list of leading goalkickers in the club's history.

2012 season and 500th goal[link]

Milne kicked his 500th career goal against the Melbourne Demons in Round 5, becoming the 50th player to kick 500 goals in the history of the VFL/AFL.
