My Nature Journal - Mt San Jacinto Park
Whenever our family goes on nature hikes, we take out our journals and try to document what we see and feel. When we went to Mount San Jacinto Park by way of the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, I decided to make my journal with video. This was a lot of fun and it was very beautiful up there at 8000 feet. I shot this with our little Point and Shoot Nikon Cool Pix so I apologize for the auto iris. (If you are wondering why we are smelling the Jeffrey Pines, it's because their bark gives off a vanilla butterscotch type of aroma)

Stem cells put women on fertile ground - by Nature Video
Stem cells from the ovaries of reproductive age women can give rise to cells that appear to be mature oocytes, suggesting that women can produce more eggs than the batch they are born with. The findings, reported in the March 2012 issue of Nature Medicine, open the door to a new generation of assisted fertility treatments. www.nature.com

One foot in the past
A few million years ago, our ancestors stopped climbing trees and started walking upright, on two feet. To work out how and when this happened, researchers look for fossils -- and recently they found a surprising set of foot bones in Ethiopia. The foot is about 3.4 million years old, making it roughly the same age as 'Lucy' and her species, Australopithecus afarensis. But while Lucy's species had feet much like modern humans, the new foot has an opposable big toe, like a chimp. So do the foot bones represent a new species of hominin? Watch the video and decide. RNA interference (RNAi): by Nature Video
RNA interference (RNAi) is an important process, used by many different organisms to regulate the activity of genes. This animation explains how RNAi works and introduces the two main players: small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs). We take you on an audio-visual journey, diving into a cell to show how genes are transcribed to make messenger RNA (mRNA) and how RNAi can silence specific mRNAs to stop them from making proteins. The animation is based on the latest research, to give you an up-to-date view. If you'd like to know more about the structures and processes you see in this video, check out the accompanying slideshow: www.nature.com

Method of the Year 2011: Gene-editing nucleases - by Nature Video
Gene-editing nucleases can make targeted and precise changes to an organism's genome. This has opened up new possibilities for the study of gene function, as well as the treatment of disease. While gene-editing nucleases have been in use since the mid-1990s, in the form of zinc finger nucleases, the more recent discovery of TALENs (transcriptor-like effector nucleases) has created new interest. In this video, Nature Methods technology editor Monya Baker explains how gene-editing nucleases work and why they were chosen as Nature Methods 'Method of the Year' for 2011. More on the 2011 'Method of the Year' here: www.nature.com
