Luc Pokorn | Chinese Language Champion | Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics
Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics student Luc Pohorn has won the Americas Award at the Chinese Bridge: Chinese Proficiency Competition on July 30 in Changsha, China. The award recognizes his proficiency in speaking Chinese and was voted best in North and South and Central America. He studied Chinese in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics here at LA&PS.; His professor Xueqing Xu said "We are thrilled by his achievement."
Luc also won the Most Popular Contestant Award and was the first Canadian to win this prestigious honour in the 12-year history of the competition.
The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics offers one of the widest selections of languages of any Canadian university: American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), German, Greek (both Classical and Modern), Hebrew, Hindi-Urdu, Italian, Jamaican Creole, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Persian, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Swahili and Yiddish.
The department also offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Linguistics, the discipline concerned with discovering the organizing principles of human language and applying these principles to the description of individual languages.
