The Overseas Filipinos Remittances for Development: Building a Future Back Home (OFs-RED) Project
MANILA, Philippines, April 5, 2011 -- The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Government of the Philippines today launched a US$250000 major project wholly funded by Western Union to harness the power of remittances from migrant workers to drive sustainable economic development in the Philippines and other developing countries. The Overseas Filipinos Remittances for Development: Building a Future Back Home (OFs-RED) Project aims to launch a pilot program to pool funds from migrant workers and channel them into projects that lead to economic development and community-based enterprises in the workers' home communities. The two-year project is made possible by a US$250000 grant from Western Union's philanthropic arm, the Western Union Foundation. A similar project with equal funding will be extended to Morocco with a view to creating a model that could be replicated across the globe. Renaud Meyer, UNDP Country Director in the Philippines, said: "The Western Union funded OFs-RED project will contribute to speeding up efforts in the Philippines to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, in particular the target to halve poverty by 2015, by supporting the creation of an enabling environment for overseas Filipinos and their families to use remittances for development." The project will test a mechanism to facilitate and direct overseas remittances towards savings and investment in livelihood improvement and entrepreneurship for the poor and vulnerable, and ...

Remittance jump
Remittances to Kenya continued to remain bullish and went up for the third straight month this year, jumping 37% in march to register 71.6 million us dollars or 6.15 billion shillings against 52.3 million dollars or 4.49 billion shillings over a similar period last year. This is in spite of a shaky global economy and continued sluggishness of economies across Europe and much of the west.

Remittance Man
Every racing fan has their personal favourite racehorse, for National Hunt racing Remittance Man is mine. Once he went chasing he was fabulous and at his best over 2m - 2m 4f he was virtually unbeatable. I haven't seen a better jumper of a fence since either. It's a shame that he suffered injury during the prime of his career otherwise I believe he would have been a multiple winner of the Champion Chase in my opinion.

Moldova: Remittances
Despite economic reforms, Moldova remains the poorest country in Europe. Its economy relies on money sent home by the hundreds of thousands of Moldovans who work outside the country. In the current global economic environment, it is inevitable that remittances will fall. Although it is still too early to tell by exactly how much, it is clear that declining remittances could have a large impact on families trying to cope with the economic downturn. April 2009.
