The Roman Empire In North Africa - Part I
The Roman Empire In North Africa - Part I
Discovery Channel - The Roman Empire In North Africa The Roman province of Africa was established after the Romans defeated Carthage in the Third Punic War. It roughly comprised the territory of present-day northern Tunisia, north-eastern Algeria and the Mediterranean coast of modern-day western Libya along the Syrtis Minor. The Arabs later named roughly the same region as the original province Ifriqiya, a rendering of Africa. The land acquired for the Africa Province was the site of the ancient city of Carthage. Other large cities in the region included Hadrumetum (modern Sousse, Tunisia), capital of Byzacena, Hippo Regius (modern Annaba, Algeria). The province was established in 146 BC, following the Third Punic War. Rome established its first African colony, Africa Proconsularis or Africa Vetus (Old Africa), governed by a proconsul, in the most fertile part of what was formerly Carthaginian territory. Utica was formed as the administrative capital. The remaining territory was left in the domain of the Numidian client king Massinissa. At this time, the Roman policy in Africa was simply to prevent another great power from rising on the far side of Sicily. In 118 BC, the Numidian prince Jugurtha attempted to reunify the smaller kingdoms. However, upon his death, much of Jugurtha's territory was placed in the control of the Mauretanian client king Bocchus; and, by that time, the romanization of Africa was firmly rooted. Several political and provincial reforms were ...

Ron, Aaron and PJ here, we are just pulling into a great north African city where we are anticipating meeting with a special family from our community at home. We are driving right now and have had a long day. We've been surrounded (in car) all day by sheep, shepherds, mountain vistas and the people who inhabit these mountains. Again, thanks for making all of this possible. I hope you enjoy watching the video and seeing a bit of what we have been seeing today. Love to you all, The Three Amigos and our fearless driver and guide Jerry.

North Africa: The Blue Revolution
North Africa: The Blue Revolution
The mass strike phenomenon, which ousted the longtime leaders of Tunisia and Egypt, and which is now taking over Europe and the United States, has opened up the possibilities of a rapid improvement in the standard of living for people in the whole region. What the people of North Africa revolted against was the long-standing murderous policies of the new imperialism, "globalization," often dictated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). One of the top priorities will be to make the deserts bloom! Through projects such as the filling of the Tunisian "chotts" and the Qattara Depression in Egypt, and a new north-south development corridor parallel to the Nile River Valley, North Africa have great possibilities of conquering the Sahara and greening huge land areas, thus opening them up for human settlements and agriculture, increasing food production, and eliminating hunger and poverty. Together with the Transaqua project for refilling Lake Chad, the Gezira agricultural scheme in Sudan, and other water projects, the "Blue Revolution" of North Africa will be one of the cornerstones for securing a bright future.

protectacow.typepad.com The Peace Formula by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada The great mistake of modern civilization is to encroach upon others' property as though it were one's own and thereby create an unnecessary disturbance of the laws of nature. These laws are very strong. No living entity can violate them. Only one who is Krsna conscious can easily overcome the stringent laws of nature and thus become happy and peaceful in the world. As a state is protected by the department of law and order, so the state of the universe, of which this earth is only an insignificant fragment, is protected by the laws of nature. This material nature is one of the different potencies of God, who is the ultimate proprietor of everything that be. This earth is, therefore, the property of God, but we, the living entities, especially the so-called civilized human beings, are claiming God's property as our own under both an individual and collective false conception. If you want peace, you have to remove this false conception from your mind and from the world. This false claim of proprietorship by the human race on earth is partly or wholly the cause of all disturbances of peace on earth. Foolish so-called civilized men are claiming proprietary rights on the property of God because they have now become godless. You cannot be happy and peaceful in a godless society. In the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krsna says that He is the factual enjoyer of all activities of the living entities, that He is ...

This talk is the last one in the series "Negotiating French, Maghreb-French, & Jewish Identities Through Literature and History," seeking to enhance a new dialogue between different plural voices writing about multiple Jewish identities originating from France and the Maghreb. Special focus on conflicting and co-existing identities and the ways in which they are presented in literature and history. The goal of the project is to look beyond the much discussed hybrid identity of widely translated writers and scholars, and present a more inclusive, rich, and complex perspective on the unique interplay between Jewish, French and/or Maghreb identities.
