TRIM CASTLE - COUNTY MEATH - IRELAND
TRIM CASTLE - COUNTY MEATH - IRELAND
Went to see the Trim Castle today in County Meath Ireland. It was a clear and sunny day. Enjoy the walk through! =^) en.wikipedia.org Trim Castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, was constructed over a thirty-year period by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter. Hugh de Lacy was granted the Liberty of Meath by King Henry II in 1172 in an attempt to curb the expansionist policies of Richard de Clare, (Strongbow). Construction of the massive three storied Keep, the central stronghold of the castle, was begun c. 1176 on the site of an earlier wooden fortress. This massive twenty-sided tower, which is cruciform in shape, was protected by a ditch, curtain wall and moat. Lynch's Knock, Summerhill, Co.Meath
Lynch's Knock, Summerhill, Co.Meath
The sixteenth-century castle at Summerhill has a four-storey tower measuring 10m by 8m with the second storey vaulted. The spiral staircase in the NW corner has a newel and gunloops. The upper levels have fireplaces in the south wall and latrines on the north. There are fine upper windows with dished spandrels and hoodmoulds. Attached to the SW corner is a later range, possibly T-plan, bearing a plaque with the O'Neill arms commemorating the priest Luke Wye with the date 1636: PRAY FOR THE / SOULE of LUKE / [ ]WYE[ ] PRIEST / 1636. Contains mullioned windows, the projecting tower to the west contained the wooden staircase. It is now covered in dense ivy. This early Jacobean building is worthy of further study. Carefully stripped of ivy and vegetation it would provide an excellent eye-catcher within the walls of the demesne. Dr. Henry Jones, dated to 1666, which refers to 'Knock, alias Summerhill'. The medieval Irish name for the area was either Drumsawry or Knocksawry, Cnoc-Samhruidh, the latter name used in an unpublished poem of a Franciscan friar in a manuscript dated 1626. In administrative documents of the medieval and early modern period the area was referred to as 'the Knock' or 'Lynch's Knock'. The Lynch name associated with this area was that of an old Anglo-Norman family, the FitzLeons, tenants in chief of the De Lacy lordship of Meath. The name, variously spelt FitzLeon, de Leyns, transmogrified into Lynch over the centuries. The earliest documentary evidence ...

Tour Of Trim, County Meath, Ireland 1989
A tour of of my fathers home town, Trim in Ireland. Filmed by my dad Chris and navigated by his sister Kathleen in 1989. Copyright. Trim, Irish Baile Átha Troim ("Ford of the Elder Bushes"), market town and seat of County Meath, Ireland, on the River Boyne. It was important from ancient times and was the seat of a bishopric. St. Patrick is said to have founded a monastery there in 432; there are remnants of a 13th-century Augustinian abbey, two gates from the town walls, and extensive remains of Trim Castle, which was founded in 1173 and was incorporated in the 13th century into the largest Anglo-Norman fortress in Ireland. St. Patrick's Church (1499) with its castellated tower became a Church of Ireland.

Enfield Station Co Meath - 156 & 144 crossing.avi
Friday May 7th 1999 and a pair of 141 class locos pull into the passing loop at Enfield Station, County Meath, Ireland in order to cross the up passenger. Watch as the loco driver tosses over the hand ring containing the staff (token) used for single line working on the way in. You will see it being handed up by the signalman to the up passenger loco driver. Turn the speaker volume up and watch the depart as 156 and 144 struggle to get going! There are 9 molasses and 24 x 4 wheel timber wagons on the train. I believe the driver is Christy McGovern. Apologies for the poor picture and sound. The tape had been damaged and had to be restored. Enjoy.

The graves are about 5000 years old, and the complex contains a lot of the world's megalithic art.
