SHASTIABDAPOORTHI FUNCTION: Shastiabdapoorthi at Thirukkadaiyur: According to Hindu customs, it is significant to go on a holy trip to Sri Abirami Temple at Thirukadaiyur after one attains the age of 60 years. It is also recommended to perform Shastiabdapoorthi at this temple at that time. What is Shastiabdapoorthi: This is a very important ceremony conducted at the completion of 60 years in a man's life and commencement of 61st year. Shashtiabdapoorthi means Shasti (60) abda (years) poorthi (completion). This ceremony signifies that the person has completed his commitment to his family and can shift his mind to spirituality. This concept is based on the Hindu system of Brahmacharya, Grihasthasrama, Vanaprastha and Sanyasa. After his commitment in Grihasthasrama at the completion of 60 years age, Shastiapthapoorthi is performed, where one enters the phase of Vanaprastham, the initiation into spirituality. The Thirukkadaiyur Abhirami temple is where Markandeya was blessed to remain 16 years forever and immortal. Abhirami Bhattar who was praying at this Temple in tapas did not acknowledge King Serfoji. The king who was annoyed, asked Bhattar the phase of the moon on that particular day. The bhattar who was in deep meditation, said it was full moon day, when it was actually a new moon day. The incensed king sentenced Bhattar to death. Goddess Abhirami heard the prayers of Bhattar praising her and immediately rushed to save him. She threw her earrings into the sky, which glowed like a full moon making bhattar's statement true. The king realized his mistake and understood the devotion of Bhattar to Goddess Abhirami. As mentioned in the above two instances it is at this Temple the God and Goddess blessed their devotees with eternal life. For this reason it is recommended that a holy trip is conducted to Thirukkadaiyur and Shastiabdapoorthi is conducted there. The Shastiabdapoorthi Ceremony: On that day from 7am onwards Shastiapthapoorthi is conducted including: 1.Agnikaryam, 2.Ganapathy Homam, 3.Navagraha Homam, 4.Mrityunjaya Homam, 5.Homam of the Life, 6.Dhanvanthri Oushadha Homam, 7.Durga Homam, 8.Sudarshana Homam, 9.Ashta Lakshmi Homam, 10.Maha Vishnu Homam, 11.Shastiapthapoorthi Homam, 12.Homam of the Whole Family (birth Star), 13.Vasodha, 14.Poornahuti, 15.Deeparadhana, 16.Mantra Pushpam, 17.Theertha Abhishekam, 18.Muhurtham, 19.Asirvatham, 20.Swami Tharisanam, 21.Archanai Vazhipadu. At the temple, the start timings may change based on Rahu Kalam and Yamagandam on that particular date. The articles required for conducting Rudra Ekadasi and Shashtiabdapoorthi rituals are: 1. Rose Garland for bride and groom, 2.Seven coconuts covered with turmeric, 3.Cup for sandal holding paste, 4.Seer to include fruits, 5.seer plates 7 numbers, 6.For giving dhaanam (dhoti, towel, and sari), and 7.Thamboolam bag for relatives.
