Shrimp pond with paddlewheel aerators in Indonesia. The pond is in an early stage of cultivation; plankton has been seeded and grown (whence the greenish color of the water); shrimp fry is to be released next.

Kentucky River, Kentucky (May 26)--Aerating along the Kentucky lasted over a week. By the time the slug of oxygen-deficient water reached the Ohio River, the levels were high enough to sustain fish life. The GST provided pumps and manpower to circulate the water column and displace water in the river, adding oxygen to the water. The Environmental Protection Agency requested assistance from the Gulf Strike Team when a distillery spills hundreds of thousands of gallons of bourbon into the river. U

Kentucky River, Kentucky (May 26)--Gulf Strike Team members BM1 Rod Elkins, MK1 Matt Gans, DC1 Ed Daniels and CWO Ray Pitts discuss the placement of pumping equipment aboard a barge in the Kentucky River. The GST was called in to provide technical expertise and equipment when a distillery fire polluted the river. A slug of oxygen-deficient water traveled down the river and killed thousands of fish. The GST pumped air into the water and broke up the water column to re-aerate the water. The Enviro

Kentucky River, Kentucky (May 26)--MK1 Matt Gans of the GST logs notes concerning the aerating process on the Kentucky River. Bourbon entering the water from a distillery fire prevented oxygen-levels from sustaining fish life. Gans, on his 40th hour without sleep, drove an 18-wheel tractor trailer truck hauling prime movers and pumps from Alabama to Kentucky and spent the following day working on the river. Members of the strike teams often work hours on end without sleep to ensure an emergency
