Woodstock 1969 - Sly and the Family Stone - I Want to Take You Higher 1/2
Part 2/2: www.youtube.com Very late on Saturday evening, or rather Sunday morning, came Sly & The Family Stone: 3:30 am. Led by Sly Stone, they were pioneers of Funk-Rock which was still based on Soul and R&B; added with some psychedelic elements as well as Gospel. The band consisted of black and white members, men and women, which wasn't that usual at that time. Given their late appearance Sly & The Family Stone were remarkably fresh and powerful. The Woodstock show is widely considered as one of their best performances.

Sly & The Family Stone - A Family Affair
"Family Affair" was a 1971 number-one hit single recorded by Sly & the Family Stone for the Epic Records label. It became the fourth and final number-one pop hit for the band. Rolling Stone magazine later ranked the song #138 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. More details (from Wikipedia): Released on November 6, 1971,[1] "Family Affair" was markedly different from the earlier Sly & the Family Stone hits. "Family Affair" is a somber, Hohner Pianet electric piano based record with a rhythm box (or drum machine) providing the rhythm, making it the first number-one hit to feature a programmed rhythm track. Sly Stone and his sister Rose sing lead on the song. The lyrics reflect the good and bad aspects of being family, with Sly delivering his part in a low funk-styled tone instead of his earlier gospel-based shout. "Family Affair" was the most successful hit of Sly & the Family Stone's career, peaking at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, while achieving the same on the Billboard R&B; Singles chart for five weeks.[2]. The band's long-awaited fifth album, There's a Riot Goin' On, debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts during the same period. There's a Riot Goin' On was typified by a deep, dark style of funk, evident in "Family Affair", that earned the album a place as one of the most influential albums of all time.

SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE - LIVE 1968 - "Everyday People / Dance To The Music"
Sly and the Family Stone were an American rock, funk, and soul band from San Francisco. Active from 1967 to 1983, the band was pivotal in the development of soul, funk, and psychedelic music. Headed by singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sly Stone, and containing several of his family members and friends, the band was the first major American rock band to have an "integrated, multi-gender" lineup. Upon its February 1968 release, "Dance to the Music" became a widespread ground-breaking hit, and was the band's first charting single, reaching # 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. In late 1968, Sly and the Family Stone released the single "Everyday People", which became the band's first number-one hit. "Everyday People" was a protest against prejudices of all kinds, and popularized the catchphrase "different strokes for different folks." Although "Dance to the Music" was the band's only hit single until late 1968, the impact of that single and the "Dance to the Music" and "Life" albums reverberated across the music industry. The smooth, piano-based "Motown sound" was out; "psychedelic soul" was in. During the early 1970s, the band switched to a grittier funk sound, which was as influential on the music industry as their earlier work. The band began to fall apart during this period because of drug abuse and ego clashes; consequently, the fortunes and reliability of the band deteriorated, leading to its dissolution in 1975. Sly Stone continued to record ...

Little Sister / Sly Stone - You're The One (Tom Moulton Mix)
A seriously funky track, originally released in 1970. This is the later Tom Moulton mix, which really does the groove justice. (Lyrics below) Music & words by SYLVESTER STEWART (aka Sly Stone) Produced & arranged by SLY STONE (aka Sylvester Stewart) Remixed by TOM MOULTON LITTLE SISTER: VAETTA STEWART, MARY McCREARY & ELVA MOUTON I'm the one You're the one I'm the one who wants to be ahead I stand in line and I'm behind instead What is happenin' let me look around Not a thing trying to hold me down Now I know I got to look at me Some things a little hard to see Can't blame your neighborhood You're the one Your mama can't make you good You're the one Don't blame no argument You're the one Don't you know how to take a hint You're the one Your teacher can't teach you dumb You're the one But your pity can make you numb You're the one I'm the one my life had taught to fight To turn around would never make it right Inside out or outside in The way you go depends on where you've been I think I'm making it, I think I'm near Then I realize I'm in the rear I'm the one You're the one
