Jimmy Savile: was a Necrophiliac', says Paul Gambaccini on BBC Radio 5 Live "DOCUMENTARY"
Savile sex scandal hits horrific new low as former colleague Paul Gambaccini claims on Radio Five Live that DJ was a 'necrophiliac' Former BBC DJ said he was aware of claims in the eighties 'The expression I came to associate with Savile's sexual partners was "under-age subnormals", says colleague of the Jim'll Fix It presenter In 1990 interview Savile dismissed claims he was a necrophiliac after saying he took pleasure in taking dead people to a hospital mortuary A former BBC colleague of Jimmy Savile has claimed the predatory paedophile was a necrophiliac. It is one of the most extraordinary allegations to have come out in the wake of the scandal. The claim was made on Radio 5 Live today by Paul Gambaccini, who started working as a DJ on Radio 1 in 1973. Mr Gambaccini, 63, said he was aware of the necrophilia claims in the eighties. He questioned why newspapers had not acted when he said a reporter had boasted that his colleagues were aware of a story linking Savile to 'necrophilia'. His comments astounded presenter Nicky Campbell who tried to stop the conversation by warning the allegations were not in the public domain. Campbell said: 'That particularly lurid accusation that you have just brought to people's attention is one that has not been in the public domain.' Gambaccini agreed and asked 'why not?'. And he asked: 'Who vetted the knighthood? Coco the clown? He had worked with Savile at Radio 1 where he had first heard stories about his abuse of under-age girls. He ...

Sir Jimmy Savile accused of child sexual abuse in documentary
The seasoned charity worker and high profile presenter Sir Jimmy Savile, who fronted legendary TV shows including Top of the Pops and Jim'll Fix It, has been accused of sexual abuse against under-age teenage girls in an explosive ITV1documentary. Several of the alleged victims speak on the programme explaining the abuse took place in hospitals, schools and BBC buildings. All said, they were too scared to report the abuse, as Savile was a powerful, media figure and charity worker and they wouldn't be believed. Sir Jimmy was never charged with any abuse offences during his lifetime. However allegations were reported to Surrey police, who released a statement, which said Savile was interviewed in 2007 over offences which were "alleged to have occurred at a children's home in Staines" in the 1970s.The matter was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service, which "advised there was insufficient evidence to take any further action." But rumours always circulated in TV and media circles. Children's campaigner Esther Rantzen said she believes the five women who made sexual abuse allegations against Sir Jimmy Savile while Broadcaster Paul Gambaccini has claimed Sir Jimmy Savile used his charity fundraising work as a lever to prevent his private life being exposed. ITV has defended the documentary, despite an angry reaction from the late DJ's family. They added "The programme takes full account of the fact that Sir Jimmy is not here to defend himself against these claims." The ...

Digital Broadcast: an interview with Paul Gambaccini

My Generation: The Glory Years of British Rock: Private view
Jimmy Savile, Terry Christian, Paul Gambaccini and Pans People came to the private view of My Generation: The Glory Years of British Rock, an exhibition celebrating Harry Goodwin's photographs of the greatest pop stars of the 60s and 70s.
Interviewer: Don't people realise now what a massive event and institution 'Top of the Pops' was in the 1960s.
Jimmy Savile: World wide. World wide. It started as a thing from my radio show on Radio Luxembourg which was called 'The Teen and 20s Disc Club'. The BBC said 'we'd like to make a television show of it, but the title's a bit long'. So I said, 'What about Top of the Pops'? They said 'That'll do'. They never thought it would run for very long because in those days pop music was a very poor relation and only tolerated because BBC executives had children who were giving them a hard time because there was nothing for them to watch. And I did the very first one and the very last one.
Paul Gambaccini: What happened was I came here as a student in 1970. I was at University College Oxford and the two shows that the students watched every week - because there was only one room with a television, it was the television room - and it was 'Monty Python' and 'Top of the Pops'. I used to watch religiously, never dreaming I'd one day be on it. I was writing for 'Rolling Stone Magazine' while doing it and I went to do an interview with Roy Wood, who at that point was Number 1 with 'See My Baby Jive', looking exactly like that [points to photograph of Roy Wood].
Terry Christian: What was great about 'Top of the Pops' was that it was full of juxtapositions - whatever was in the charts was on 'Top of the Pops'. So whether it was James Brown or the Sex Pistols or the Rolling Stones or Petula Clark or Joe Dolce, 'Shaddup You Face', or any novelty record that happened to get in the charts, even people like Peter Sellars and things like that back in the 60s.
Interviewer: Harry is from Manchester, or from that area - you've got a special relationship with him, haven't you?
Terry Christian: Well Harry's bit of a legend. I heard about Harry a few years back - would be about five or six years ago now. There's a barbers in Chorlton called 'K Style' and John (I think that's the guy's name) who cuts Harry's hair, he had all these pictures up on his wall, pinned up with drawing pins. You're talking about thousands of pounds-worth of pictures that people had never seen, but it's great for Harry because he's probably the greatest rock photographer of them all.
Interviewer: A job that required diplomatic skills ... who was the most difficult subject?
Harry Goodwin: For pictures? Didn't like photographs being taken? Well Dusty, but she was a very good artist.
Interviewer: Dusty Springfield and Petula Clarke as well?
Harry Goodwin: They could both be a little bit awkward.
Interviewer: So what's your favourite picture here then?
Harry Goodwin: My favourite picture on the wall? It's on the book, on the back cover of the book - Jimi Hendrix. A gentleman.
Interviewer: The one with him playing the guitar with his teeth?
Harry Goodwin: He said you get that in one go. He said if you don't get it in one go, push the kids out of the way, I'll give you that from the back of the stage, I'll come right down on one knee, you'll only get it once. If you don't get it, you'll have to come tomorrow night. I said, 'I can't afford to travel round the country, I've got no money'. I didn't get a lot of money on 'Top of the Pops'. He understood that. He said, 'I'll try my best'. He came down like that and the hair ... if that had got in front of his eyes, it could have been anybody. So I panicked. When I got home I developed it straight away and when I saw it, I couldn't believe it, I'd got it.
Interviewer: So we have Pans People - we have Cherry, Dee Dee, Ruth and Babs - dance legends here. It was all quite racy at the time.
Cherry: Some of the costumes were rather lovely. In fact, some of the fan mail was about the costumes. People wanted to wear things for their wedding, for their party or their 21st, so that was very nice.
Babs: The music was the crucial point. What the music set was what we danced to. So if the music happened to be a sexy piece, then it was a sexy dance routine.
Interviewer: What was your favourite kind of music? What music did you like?
Dee Dee: Tamla Motown. Every time at that time. Because also in those days the American groups didn't come over to England, so 'Top of the Pops' had to find some kind of substitute and we were the substitute. We used to dance to all the American songs.
Interviewer: Dave Munden from the Tremeloes, Tom McGuinness from Manfred Mann and McGuinness Flint and probably all sorts of other bands. Can you tell me a little bit about your memories of 'Top of the Pops'?
Dave Munden: Well, there are too many to remember. The live sessions at 'Top of the Pops' were actually some of the best ones because ... we did one with Jimi Hendrix once and he did a sound ch
