Monday, June 11, 2012 - AFL Coverage Begins June 17th on Triangle

For the second year in a row Auckland’s Triangle Television is pleased to be able to bring coverage of AFL to the free-to-air viewing audience.

Triangle’s CEO Jim Blackman says that in association with AFL Australia the channel has arranged to screen a game a week commencing on Sunday June 17 at 9pm up to and including the legendary grand final in September. It will be simulcast on Ecasttv.co.nz, livenews.co.nz, and scoop.co.nz.

Leading AFL officials promise next year's historic Anzac Day game in Wellington will be affordable and believe a sell-out at Westpac Stadium is not unrealistic.

Thursday, May 31, 2012 - AFL planning annual ANZAC Day game in Wellington

The Australian Football League is planning an annual game in Wellington to mark ANZAC Day .

ANZAC Day is held on April 25 and pays tribute to Australian and New Zealand troops who have fought abroad.

It began after the first major military action those two armies fought in Gallipoli during World War I.

Wellington City Council is working with the AFL and the St Kilda Football Club to create a game in its city.

Bens background in AFL, Touch Football and Sevens obviously paid off by recording the most points ever achieved by a single player in a match

Monday, May 28, 2012 - New Zealand seeks Anzac Day AFL game

The Australian Football League is planning an annual game in the New Zealand capital, Wellington, to mark Anzac Day .

Anzac Day is held on April 25th and pays tribute to Australian and New Zealand troops who have fought in overseas battles.

Wellington wants an AFL game to rival the annual clash between Collingwood and Essendon at the MCG. [ABC]


Wellington City Council is working with the AFL and the St Kilda Football Club to create a game in its city, with hopes of attracting a capacity 35,000 crowd.

Eleven New Zealand players have been named in the South Pacific team that will travel to Sydney, Australia, to play in the 2012 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships in July.

Head coach Nathan Buckley had quick on-baller Marley Williams elevated from the rookie list yesterday in place of the injured Luke Ball, and Williams, 18, was immediately named to make the trip to Adelaide. Williams, who is of Maori lineage and recently described by his coach as ''a real go-getter'', played NAB Cup this season and was outstanding for the Magpies VFL a fortnight ago.

Tuesday, April 17, 2012 - Wellington deal with St Kilda closer to reality

Wellington is in the boxseat to host the first AFL competition game outside Australia, perhaps as soon as next year, as St Kilda search for a home away from home.

The Melbourne club is exploring the possibility of playing "home" games at Westpac Stadium and, with encouragement from the AFL, are in talks with Wellington City Council about developing a relationship similar to Hawthorn's deal with the Tasmanian Government.

With the matches rescheduled after bad weather, four teams came to One Tree Hill College to do battle in the Auckland Secondary Schools Senior Hawks Cup.

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 - Auckland win Under 20 NPC Title

Auckland defeated the home team Canterbury in the Under 20 National Provincial Chamionships held at Westminster Park Christchurch March 17th and 18th 2012.

The weekend saw the addition of Otago to the titles along with the selection of North and South Island teams to participate in matches against the New Zealand Under 16 team.

The 16's were victorious in both matches whilst the round robin produced a nail biting conclusion with three teams locked on two wins and percentage determining the grand final combatants.

An Australian rules talent scout might be coming to a school near you.

AFL New Zealand is attempting to increase the number of teams in schools, at the same time as the leading Australian clubs are starting to look across the Tasman for new talent.

"The Australian clubs originally looked to Ireland – because of the similarity to gaelic football – for their international talent but are now starting to see the merits of searching closer to home [in New Zealand]," AFL New Zealand national youth coach James Terry said.

Sunday, December 18, 2011 - Young Hawks Oceania Champions

The New Zealand Hawks Under 16 team has won the 2011 Oceania Chamiponships with a strong victory over Nauru. The young Hawks team were in front by 37 points at half time in a dazzling display against the only other undefeated team in the competition.

A large amount of credit must go to a successful Secondary Schools Hawks Cup Programme that resulted in students from 22 different schools selected within the New Zealand team. The selection of seven players Hawks in the Oceania Under 15 team to particpate in the New South Wales zone chamiponships and 8 players in the South Pacific team to compete in the Australian Under 16 National Championships next year highlights the potential of a new breed of footballers from Aotearoa.

Wednesday, November 23, 2011 - AFL Northland Stage 1 Complete

Whangarei Pathway Project

 

In October 2011 AFL New Zealand completed the AFL KiwiKick Pathway Project in Northland, specifically the Whangarei Region. The project was headed by former Sport Northland employee Paul Hope who commenced work with AFL New Zealand in March 2011.

 

The partnership involving $15,000 of KiwiSport funding through the Sport Northland Regional Trust, involved the delivery of the AFL KiwiKick fundamental movement skills programme.

 

     

 

Six sessions were delivered during school time to nine Primary School and 2650 students as well as the involvement of two secondary schools Whangarei Boys and Girls Colleges.

Monday, November 14, 2011 - Junior Hawks Cup goes to Kelston Boys High

The 2011 Junior Secondary Schools Championships have just completed the North Island Championships with Kelston Boys High taking out the Junior Boys title against 2009/10 winners Papatoetoe College.

  

 

 

2011 also saw the inaugural North Island Hawks Cup Junior Girls competition with Aorere College winning a tight contest against Tangaroa College.

 

The highlight of the finals besides the display of some very talented athletes was the excellent coaching abilities of Shane Leat of Kelston Boys and Sami Tuitupou of Papatotoe College.

 

Both coaches are previous participants in the Hawks Cup and now as Senior students coaching the Junior School. Both have represented New Zealand Hawks at an Under 20 level.

The Canterbury Cobras went through their second successive undefeated campaign to claim back to back championships in the AFL New Zealand Senior NPC held at Wellington at Hutt Park.

The Senior National Provincial Championships will be held at Hutt Park Wellington on November 5th and 6th 2011.

   

The competition involves four regional leagues who select players from weekely fixtures to compete in this annual event.

At this years Brownlow Medal night  for the 2011 AFL season, the Christchurch local football community was recognised for its efforts for its undaunting passion of AFL even though faced with personal hardship.

Christchurch Bulldogs President Steve Langridge was invited to attend to represent Christchurch along with further representatives from the Tokyo disaster as well as the Queensland and Victorian floods.

Wednesday, October 12, 2011 - The Pathway Begins

New Zealand Hawks Under 20 representative Sam Blackler has recently become a  father. AFL KiwiKick is the first target followed by Hawks Cup, HANZ UP! Cup, the Canterbury Australian Football League, New Zealand Hawks and finishing off with 200 games for the Hawthorn Football Club.

The pathway is now complete in New Zealand.

The introduction of AFL to children aged 5 to 12 in New Zealand is a relatively new to Auckland’s North Harbour Region.

 

 

 

 

The formation of the Oteha Valley KiwiSport project saw the collaboration of 8 primary schools and 8 sports in that region

AFL New Zealand’s ‘AFL KiwiKick’ programme is one of the sports delivered and focuses on developing fundamental movement and ball skills for boys and girls between 5 to 12 years of age.

Tuesday, October 04, 2011 - Tuitupou Breaks Handball Record

New Zealand  Under 20 Captain and International Cup representative Sami Tuitupou was recently involved in a testing combine in Melbourne .

During the combine players were tested for vertical leap, speed and skill with Tuitupou breaking the AFL record for handball accuracy.

Former Sydney Swans Premiership player and International Cup Ambassador Brett Kirk, has finalised his football trip around the world.

" I feel very fortunate that I have been a part of it. The last 7 months will go down as some of most memorable moments in my life and I would like to thank you and your team for creating an energy that was infectious. I am sure if you are like me it has taken a little time to get over the IC but know all your contributions and investment will play a big role when it is time to decide how do we continue to grow this great game. I want to let you know I will continue to be an advocate for footy outside the shores of Australia."

Thursday, September 15, 2011 - VAFA Under 18's to play NZ Hawks 20's

The Victorian Amateur Football Association will once again visit New Zealand for a two game series to be played at Parrs Park Oratia Auckland on October 8th and 10th 2011.

  

 

This will be the third visit by the VAFA with previous visits to Auckland in 2009 and Christchurch 2010. On each occasion the VAFA has been victorious with winning margins of 23pts/ 23pts/ 24pts and 40pts.

Tuesday, September 13, 2011 - HANZ UP! Cup complete the pathway

The formation of the inaugural HANZ UP! Cup competition for Under 17 players will see 300 participants competing at three venues in the Auckland region.

HANZ UP! (Hawks Australia New Zealand) is the three year agreement involving AFL New Zealand and Hawthorn Football Club.
