Making the Future: What DIY Culture is Telling Us About Tomorrow
David Pescovitz [Co-editor of BoingBoing.net and Research Director at Institute for the Future] Abstract: Two future forces, one mostly social, one mostly technological, are intersecting to transform how goods, services, and experiences—the stuff of our world—will be designed, manufactured, and distributed over the next decade. An emerging do-it-yourself culture of makers is boldly voiding warranties to tweak, hack, and customize the products they buy. And what they cant purchase, they build from scratch. Meanwhile, flexible manufacturing technologies on the horizon will change fabrication from massive and centralized to lightweight and ad hoc. These trends sit atop a platform of grassroots economics—new market structures developing online that embody a shift from stores and sales to communities and connections. Biography: David Pescovitz is co-editor of the popular blog BoingBoing.net, a research director at Institute for the Future, and editor-at-large of MAKE: magazine. From 2001 to 2007 he was the UC Berkeley College of Engineering's first writer-in-residence. An alum of UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism, he has written about science and technology for Wired, the New York Times, Scientific American, Popular Science, New Scientist, IEEE Spectrum, and many other publications.

Northwest Passage: The Birth Of Portland's DIY Culture
Northwest Passage: The Birth Of Portland's DIY Culture (TRAILER) During the late 70's and early 80's the Pacific Northwest witnessed a surge of idiosyncratic creativity that, for a time, banished the slack-jawed mentality of mainstream music and art to the shabby bargain basement of the cultural wasteland. Countless young men and women turned their backs on the hollow blather generated in corporate boardrooms, producing their own music and art with rebellious glee. NORTHWEST PASSAGE: THE BIRTH OF PORTLAND'S DIY CULTURE is an independent film that examines the alternative music movement in Portland, Oregon from 1978 to 1983. Directed and produced by Mike Lastra, NORTHWEST PASSAGE: THE BIRTH OF PORTLAND'S DIY CULTURE is a narrative told by musicians and artists via interviews photographs and vintage news clips. Bands that appear in the film include: POISON IDEA, SADONATION, The WIPERS, The DEAD KENNEDYS, The NEO BOYS, SMEGMA, The BAGS, The RATS, and The STIPHNOYDS

Hydroponic vertical tower and deep water culture gardens DIY
My adaptation of a hydroponic vertical tower garden, as well as deep water cultures. I found tutorials all over youtube for the bucket and tote systems but couldnt find one on the towers. So, I put in key words of "hydroponic tower restruarant New York" and studied the numorous videos of this entraprenuer's systems and then developed my own. I will make a few more videos throughout this growing season. I have great plans. I started these as a homeschool science project...we have had an epic fail from traditional gardening, as much as you can traditionally garden in military housing. But I am anticipating that these systems are going to feed my family of 7...Yes, I have 5 kids. This winter we will bring them, at least the tower, into the house and put lights on them to continue harvesting throughout the winter months. On the bare side of the tower, I will be planting Tiny Tim tomatoes and I will also be sprouting lettuce to replace each head as we use them. CORRECTION: I misstated the info on the pump. The tower has a ECO 396 gallon per hour pump. Also, the black tubing is black irrigation tubing, as well as the tubing running up inside the tower.

Life Ann Style - Natural Homemade DIY Lip Butter/Balm (simple recipe)
PINTEREST THIS: pinterest.com Where to buy these products? Health food stores, craft stores, ebay (best prices), Amazon, or google search soap making stores will carry them. Follow me on Pinterest: pinterest.com See what's up on my Blog: www.lifeannstyle.com Give me some Lovin on FACEBOOK www.facebook.com *I suggest finding many of these things on ebay for the best price. 1. Measuring spoons 2. Mixing/popsicAL sticks 3. Pyrex measuring Cup 4. Containers to pour into (I bought these mini containers from ebay as a bulk of 20 2 yrs ago). ingredients: 2.5 tsp food grade wax (add more wax to thicken or less for a stickier consistency) *soy wax is easier to melt than bees wax- which needs higher heat setting and may eliminate all beneficial properties in the natural oils. 2 tsp mango butter 1 tsp coconut oil 1.5 tsp almond oil Optional: add in just about 1/8 tsp Fragrant oil of your choice and coloring (cosmetic mica, concentrated lip colors, or even food coloring) Music with permission by Ryan Farish "Beautiful" itunes.apple.com
