China Unicom or China United Netcom (Hong Kong) Ltd (Chinese: 中国联合网络通信公司，中国联通), (SEHK: 0762 SSE: 600050 NYSE: CHU) is a Chinese state-owned telecommunications operator in the People's Republic of China.

History[link]

China Unicom was founded as a Government-owned corporation, established on July 19, 1994, by the Ministry of Information Industry and approved by the State Council.

Started as a wireless paging and GSM mobile operator, it currently provides a wide range of services including nationwide GSM mobile network, long-distance, local calling, data communication, Internet services and IP telephony in mainland China, and has operated a CDMA network in Macau since 18 October 2006. As of the end of April 2008, the company had 125 million GSM subscribers and 43 million CDMA subscribers.^[2] As of November 2008 the CDMA operations have been moved to China Telecom and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) has just launched in major cities across China on May 17, 2009.

Compared to other mobile providers China Unicom is ranked as the world's third-biggest mobile provider. On 7 January 2009, China Unicom was awarded WCDMA license to expand its business to 3G telecommunication.^[3]

In July 2009, China Unicom signed a $700 million deal with infrastructure vendor Ericsson to upgrade the company's GSM network.

In April 2012, China Unicom was a founding member in the formation of Cloud Computing Industry Alliance in Bejing. Other members of the alliance include Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba. [2] ^[4]

Merger with China Netcom[link]

On June 2, 2008, China Unicom announced its intention to sell its CDMA business and assets to China Telecom for a combined total of 110 billion RMB ^[5] and to merge the remainder of the company, in a share swap valued at USD $56.3 billion (based on Unicom's stock last traded price) on June 2, 2008, with China Netcom.^[6] The CDMA business was officially moved to China Telecom in early November. It also continues the former China Netcom's and the former China Telecom's PHS mobile phone businesses.

In February 2000 China Unicom became incorporated in Hong Kong and was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 22 June 2000. They are an MVNO running on Three's 2G network. They are the only provider to sell SIMs that provide native phone numbers on both sides of the border (charging slightly higher rates than local while in the mainland, but cheaper than roaming with another provider- in some cases even cheaper than a SIM from another Chinese province if being used in Shenzhen/Guangzhou area).

Joint Investment With Telefonica[link]

As of January 2011, China Unicom and Telefonica strengthened their strategic alliance and agreed on a new mutual investment. The companies agreed to deepen their cooperation in areas such as procurement, mobile service platforms, service to MNC's wholesale carriers, roaming, technology, among others, where both companies have been cooperating since the signature of their strategic alliance agreement.^[7]

Stock holding[link]

China Unicom (BVI) Limited effectively holds 40.92% of the company, and China Netcom Group (BVI) Limited holds 29.49%,^[8]

In 2009, China UniCom agreed a $1Bn cross-holding with Spanish-based operator Telefonica. In January 2011, the two partners agreed a further $500M tie-up in each other, which following completion in late 2011, Telefonica will hold a 9.7% stake in China UniCom, while China Unicom will own 1.4% of the Spanish firm.^[9]

The residual shares are traded on the Shanghai, Hong Kong and the New York stock exchanges.^[10] Both majority shareholders are state controlled enterprises.^[8]

On January 2011 China Unicom and Telefónica S.L strengthened their strategic partnership through a new share exchange.^[11]

Timothy D. “Tim” Cook (born November 1, 1960) is the CEO of Apple.^[1] Cook joined Apple in March 1998^[2] as SVP of Worldwide Operations and also served as EVP of Worldwide Sales and Operations and was COO^[3] until he was named the CEO of Apple on August 24, 2011, succeeding Steve Jobs, who died on October 5, 2011, from pancreatic cancer. Cook had previously served as acting CEO of Apple after Jobs began a medical leave in January 2011.^[4]

In early 2012, he was awarded compensation of 1 million shares, vesting in 2021, by Apple's Board of Directors.^[5] As of April 2012, these shares are valued at US $600 million, making him the world's highest paid CEO.^[6]

Early years[link]

Cook grew up in Robertsdale, Alabama, near Mobile. His father was a shipyard worker, while his mother was a homemaker. Cook graduated from high school at Robertsdale High School, earned a B.S. degree in industrial engineering from Auburn University in 1982,^[7] and his M.B.A. from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business in 1988.^[8]

Career[link]

Cook spent six months at Compaq as VP for Corporate Materials before he was hired by Steve Jobs to join Apple in 1998. He initially served as Senior Vice President for Worldwide Operations.^[2] Prior to that, Cook served as the chief operating officer (COO) of the computer reseller division of Intelligent Electronics and spent 12 years in IBM's personal computer business as the director of North American Fulfillment.^[2]

Cook is credited with pulling Apple out of manufacturing by closing factories and warehouses around the world. This helped the company reduce inventory levels and streamline its supply chain, dramatically increasing margins.^[9] In January 2007, Cook was promoted to COO.^[10]

Cook served as Apple CEO for two months in 2004, when Jobs was recovering from pancreatic cancer surgery. In 2009, Cook again served as Apple CEO for several months while Jobs took a leave of absence for a liver transplant.

In January 2011, Apple's Board of Directors approved a third medical leave of absence requested by Jobs. During that time, Cook was responsible for most of Apple’s day-to-day operations while Jobs made most major decisions.^[11] Following the resignation of Jobs, Cook was made CEO of Apple Inc. on August 24, 2011.^[12][13]

Cook also serves on the board of directors of Nike.^[3]

Personal life[link]

Cook is a fitness enthusiast and enjoys hiking, cycling, and going to the gym. He regularly begins sending emails at 4:30 am and used to hold Sunday night staff meetings by telephone to prepare for the next week.^[9]

While giving the 2010 commencement speech at Auburn University, Cook emphasized the importance of intuition in guiding his life's biggest choices, and followed by stating that preparation and hard work are also necessary to execute on that intuition.^[14]

China Telecom Corp. Ltd. (simplified Chinese: 中国电信集团公司, 中国电信) (SEHK: 728, NYSE: CHA) is a Chinese state-owned telecommunication company. It is the largest fixed line service and 3rd largest mobile telecommunication provider in the People's Republic of China.

The company provides fixed-line and Xiaolingtong (Personal Handy-phone System) telephone services to 216 million subscribers as of April 2008,^[2] and broadband internet access to over 38 million subscribers, providing approximately 62% (46 Gbit/s) of China's internet bandwidth.^[3] On June 2, 2008, China Telecom announced that it would purchase China Unicom's nationwide CDMA business and assets for 110 billion RMB, giving it 43 million mobile subscribers. On 7 January 2009, China Telecom was awarded CDMA 2000 license to expand its business to 3G telecommunication.^[4]

The company was formerly a state-owned monopoly, but is now divided into largely autonomous provincial branches^{[citation needed]}. Its assets in the country's 10 northern provinces were transferred to China Netcom in 2002 (now China Unicom), leaving China Telecom with the 21 southern provinces. Although the two companies are free to compete across the whole country, Telecom still has an overwhelming market share in the south, while Unicom dominates the north.

China Telecom has been listed on the Hong Kong and New York stock exchanges since 2002, but the Chinese government still retains majority ownership.

WiFi[link]

China Telecom has the largest single WiFi wireless broadband network with over 30,000 hotspot locations covering hotels, restaurants and transportation facilities in over 250 major Chinese cities including Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanning, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Dalian, Kunming, Wuhan, Chongqing and Xi'an.^[5]

Consolidation and expansion[link]

On June 2, 2008, the company announced it would acquire China Unicom's CDMA business and network for a total of 110 billion yuan in cash (USD $15.86 Billion in cash), a series of transactions aimed transform the company into a fully integrated telecommunications operator after its expected completion in the next six months to one year.^[6]

Such shifts mark a new era for the Telecommunications industry in China in which analyst have further commented that these changes are aimed at promoting a more fair and competitive industry environment.^[7]

China Telecom (Europe) Ltd. on 2008-10-23 said it would expand its Asian-European services, aiming to increase its market share in Europe.^[8]

In May 2011, China Telecom formed a strategic partnership with German software group SAP to offer a cloud-based version of SAP's business software to small and medium companies in China.^[9]

Rerouted Internet traffic[link]

On April 8, 2010 China Telecom rerouted about 15% of foreign Internet traffic through Chinese servers for 18 minutes.^[10] The traffic included the commercial websites of Dell, IBM, Microsoft, and Yahoo! as well as government and military sites in the United States.^[11] China Telecom denied hijacking any Internet traffic.^[12]
