Syrian president agrees to Russian-led peace talks

After several months of violence between anti-government rebels and Bashar al-Assad's government, the first step to peace has been taken. This weekend Syria made headlines when China and Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution to replace the current government. Many criticized the two countries for the veto but now Russia has influenced al-Assad to meet with the anti-government leaders in Moscow. According to some reports, the head of the Syrian National Council has rejected the Moscow invitation and will only talk until al-Assad steps down. Marina Portnaya, RT correspondent, gives us the latest on the Syrian peace talks. Like us and/or follow us: twitter.com www.facebook.com Related article

Summit to set path towards greater EU integration
Summit to set path towards greater EU integration

EurActiv's EU Summit live coverage: www.euractiv.com This will be the fourth 'make or break' EU summit in a year. European leaders are gathering in Brussels later this week to come up with credible solutions to solve the euro crisis. But experts believe this meeting will be no panacea for the euro's problems. International pressure is mounting amid fears of a full-scale economic crisis. EU leaders consider that more 'European integration' is the long-lasting solution that markets are so intensively demanding. A banking union and issuing the so-called 'eurobonds' are in the cards. But Germany still wants more fiscal discipline. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has so far rejected pooling European sovereign debt or any sort of common deposit insurance. In her view, eurobonds could see Germany becoming the paymaster for the rest of Europe. As recession and high unemployment spread across Europe, Merkel's austerity is becoming less and less popular. Instead, France's President Francois Hollande and his growth-oriented proposals are gaining momentum and gradually putting pressure on Germany's way of managing the crisis. Only last Friday, leaders of the eurozone's four biggest nations agreed to a growth plan worth 130 billion euros. Ahead of a crucial meeting for the continent's future, Europe's situation is worsening. Spain on Monday formally requested a 62 billion euro bailout to recapitalize its debt-ridden banks. According to the Spanish government, it is only a nearly ... Related article

Teddy Roosevelt charging up the San Juan Heights, the Rough Riders and the sinking of the battleship, the USS Maine---these are what people commonly know about the United States' war with Spain in 1898. What they may not remember is that this was the war that steered the United States to center stage as a world power. Victorious over Spain in Cuba and the Philippines, the United States, a nation founded in opposition to imperialism, grappled with its new role as an imperial power. More recent events in Vietnam, Somalia, and Yugoslavia bear striking parallels to those of 1898. Even in its own time, the war with Spain was understood as a turning point in American history. Hollande to push for eurbonds at EU Summit
Hollande to push for eurbonds at EU Summit

EU leaders are gathering in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss how to kick-start growth in Europe while keeping deficits down. New French President Francois Hollande has increasingly been putting pressure on German Chancellor Angela Merkel to reconsider her negative views on Euro bonds, bonds jointly underwritten by all eurozone member states. Hollande warned on Saturday during a G8 Summit in Camp David that he is not alone in supporting the proposal. Italy's Monti, Spain's Rajoy and the EC are expected to back the idea. As the biggest economy in Europe, mutualizing common European debt would mean Germany having to finance sovereign debt from other countries. Merkel has already said she does not rule out euro bonds as a long-term prospect, but under one condition: a more integrated political and fiscal European Union. Cube Spin Greece and the unofficial talk of a Greek euro exit are also set to be discussed. After the elections earlier this month, the Greek political parties failed to form a government, so new elections have been called for the 17th of June, less than two weeks before the next EU summit. Radical left-wing group Syriza is set to become the biggest political party and they completely oppose the severe austerity measures imposed by Brussels and the IMF. The European commission wants Greece to stay inside the euro area. Because of the political disagreements, talk of a Greek euro exit is no longer taboo. It's a prospect that certainly will be discussed again in ... Related article

Obama Health Care Law Heads to Supreme Court Today

A question at the heart of the American experiment--the reach of federal power--returns to the Supreme Court Monday, when the justices open three days of argument over President Barack Obama's health-care overhaul. At issue, the administration's allies say, is Congress' constitutional power to address national problems with comprehensive solutions. In jeopardy, critics counter, is a concept of liberty that disables the national government from entire categories of regulation, reserving essential decisions over health and safety to the states. Palestinian Hunger Strike Ends
Palestinian Hunger Strike Ends
4:09
Via Reuters: "Most of some 1600 prisoners, a third of the 4800 Palestinians in Israeli jails, began refusing food on April 17 although a few had been fasting much longer - up to 77 days. Their protest centered on demands for more family visits, an end to solitary confinement and an end to so-called "administrative detention", a practice that has drawn international criticism on human rights grounds. Palestinian officials said Egypt had drafted an agreement in Cairo with representatives of the Palestinian prisoners, and that inmates met during the day and had agreed to the terms. There was no immediate word from the prisoners as to whether any had actually ended their strike. An Egyptian official involved in the talks said that under Monday's deal to end the strike, Israel had agreed to end solitary confinement for 19 prisoners and lifted a ban on visits to prisoners by relatives living in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.
