X Inactivation
Paul Andersen explains how X inactivation works in mammals. This process was first described by Mary Lyon. Each cell in a female will have on activated and one inactivated X chromosome. This explains why almost all calico cats are female.

X Inactivation and Epigenetics
X inactivation is a vital process that occurs in all DNA-containing cells of the female body. It is also an important research model and tool for studying epigenetics. Epigenetics refers to processes that tell our cells how, and when, to read the DNA blueprint. The epigenetic regulation of DNA is critical in both normal development and disease. X inactivation is a type of gene dosage compensation. In humans, the sex chromosomes X and Y determine the sex of an individual - females have two X chromosomes (XX), males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY). All of the genes on the Y chromosome are required in male development, while the genes on the X chromosome are needed for both male and female development. Because females receive two X chromosomes, they inherit two copies of many of the genes that are needed for normal function. Extra copies of genes or chromosomes can affect normal development. An example is Down's syndrome, which is caused by an extra copy of part or all of chromosome 21. In female mammals, a process called X inactivation has evolved to compensate for the extra X chromosome. In X inactivation, each cell 'switches off' one of its X chromosomes, chosen at random, to ensure the correct number of genes are expressed, and to prevent abnormal development.

How the Body Works : The Sex Chromosomes
The Sex Chromosomes The sex of an individual is determined by a pair of chromosomes designated as XX in a female and XY in a male. Ova contain only X chromosomes, but sperm contain either an X or a Y in a one-to-one ratio. At fertilization, there is an equal chance of an XX or an XY pair being formed. Sex-linked characteristics, such as hemophilia, arise because there are regions of the X chromosome without corresponding regions on the smaller Y chromosome.

Color Blind Test - Online
Color Blindness is mainly the result of hereditary deficient X chromosome. Because men only have 1 X chromosome, they are more likely to be color blind. Women have 2 X chromosomes, so both have to be defective for the woman to be color blind. This means that a woman could have 1 healthy X chromosome and 1 defective X chromosome and not be color blind, but she would be a carrier. Men always get the defective chromosome from their mothers since fathers only give Ys for men. Women on the other hand have to get the defective chromosome from both parents. This short color blind test can give you some preliminary results. For a much more involved test click on the following link -- bit.ly

NOT JUST A X-CHROMOSOME THING
It's a simple matter in the end. What's your pet peeve? Leave me a comment. UPDATE: This video was meant for my 23 yr. old son, who turned beet red with embarrassment when he saw the video, but who NOW changes the roll when it goes empty on his watch. There is a method to my madness. By the comments I see I am not the only one who suffered from this pet peeve. lol Peace and Love~
