It is with great sadness that we report the death of Bob Friend, one of the faces who launched Sky News.
Bob, one of Sky's most popular and colourful presenters, died today after a short illness.
Apart from a distinguished journalistic career as a foreign correspondent, he also featured in two Hollywood blockbusters and was awarded the MBE.

Robert Bartmess Friend (born November 24, 1930) is a former right-handed starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who pitched primarily for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1951–1965), joining the New York Yankees and New York Mets in his final season of 1966. He is the first man ever to lead the league in ERA while pitching for a last place team.
Friend was born in Lafayette, Indiana, and grew up in nearby West Lafayette. His father was an orchestra leader, and Friend studied piano seriously until age sixteen, about the same time as his father died. At West Lafayette High School, Friend was an all-state football halfback and an all-state pitcher on the baseball team, and also played basketball and golf.
Friend's father and many other family members had attended Purdue University, and Friend dreamed of playing college football for Purdue, as well as pursuing a baseball career. However, a high school shoulder injury led him to focus on baseball, and he signed a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He enrolled at Purdue in the fall of 1949, but was ineligible for college athletics. Friend attended Purdue during baseball off-seasons for eight years, eventually earning a bachelor's degree in economics in 1957, and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

Vivien Creegor (born 1960) is an English television newscaster. From 1989 until 2006, she was one of the principal news readers on Sky News.
Creegor started her career as a secretary with the BBC and eventually became a Production Assistant for BBC Radio Drama, an abridger for the BBC Radio 4 programme, ‘A Book at Bedtime’. She became a newscaster on British television on BBC1 and BBC2 and on radio on BBC Radio 4.
In 1988, she joined the fledgling Sky News, eventually becoming the news anchor with Bob Friend. She remained at Sky until 2006, when she was released, according to the management, "to make way for new faces".
She has written several articles for the London Evening Standard and the Daily Mail and also worked for many years with the United Nations, frequently as a Goodwill Ambassador. In addition, for several years, she presented the Millennium Child of Achievement Forum.
After leaving Sky, she moved to Hollywood and appeared in the movie Stormbreaker.
