Katsushika Hokusai
Katsushika Hokusai (October or November 1760 -- May 10, 1849)was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. In his time, he was Japan's leading expert on Chinese painting.Born in Edo (now Tokyo), Hokusai is best-known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富嶽三十六景, Fugaku Sanjūroku-kei?, c. 1831) which includes the internationally recognized print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, created during the 1820s. Hokusai created the "Thirty-Six Views" both as a response to a domestic travel boom and as part of a personal obsession with Mount Fuji.It was this series, specifically The Great Wave print and Fuji in Clear Weather, that secured Hokusai's fame both within Japan and overseas. As historian Richard Lane concludes, "Indeed, if there is one work that made Hokusai's name, both in Japan and abroad, it must be this monumental print-series...".While Hokusai's work prior to this series is certainly important, it was not until this series that he gained broad recognition and left a lasting impact on the art world. It was also The Great Wave print that initially received, and continues to receive, acclaim and popularity in the Western world. Hokusai had a long career, but he produced most of his important work after age 60. His most popular work is the ukiyo-e series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which was created between 1826 and 1833. It actually consists of 46 prints (10 of them added after initial publication). In <b>...</b>

Painting as Obsession - Hokusai's works in Berlin | Arts 21
It's a unique exhibition - many of the works of 19th century Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai have never before been seen in Europe. Now Berlin's Martin Gropius Bau is putting on a show of his life work.Hokusai is considered one of the greatest artists of the 19th century - the European Impressionists admired his light brushstrokes, his woodcuts and the gentle colours of his pictures. Nowadays, comicbook artists across the world see him as an inspiration - Hokusai is seen as the inventor of manga. ARTS.21 looks at how obsessed the Japanese were with combining the styles of Europe and Asia.

Haniwa Horse and Hokusai's Ghosts (Ancient Art Podcast 34)
Enchanted riders, ghostly horses, and tortured souls round out this Halloween edition of the Ancient Art Podcast. The Art Institute of Chicago's new Weston Wing of Japanese Art showcases wonderful works from Japanese prehistory through present day. We wrap our head around the 5th and 6th century earthenware haniwa tomb figures of Japan's Kofun era, including a particularly magnificent clay horse. An interesting passage from an ancient text reveals there's more than meets the eye to these figurines. We see what's at stake in some ghoulish Japanese ghost stories. And the haunting Edo period woodblock prints of the series "One Hundred Ghost Stories" (Hyaku Monogatari) by the master printmaker Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) contributes to the creepiness. Lastly, we put the nail in the coffin with a nod to modern horror cinema. Light some candles and snuggle up for our most horrific episode yet! Roland Kelts Presents Japan's Apocalyptic Imagination in Anime, Manga and Art at Otakon 2011
From the violent seas featured in Japan's most famous woodblock print, Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," to the massive tsunami in Hayao Miyazaki's last anime feature, "Ponyo," Japanese artists have rendered end-of-the-world scenarios for centuries. Anime classic "Akira" begins with the total destruction of Tokyo; "Grave of the Fireflies" shows Kobe being incinerated by fire bombs; "Godzilla" irradiates and destroys everything. We will explore how and why Japan's art and popular culture are obsessed with apocalypse--and look at how some anime and manga artists are responding to the nation's latest disaster.
