MCR News, Comic Book Reviews Kick-Ass, Captain America, more
Breaking News: Lead singer of My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way is calling Umbrella Academy his debut comic. BUT, we dug up a comic he published way back when he was in high school called "On Raven's Wings". Mark Millar and John Romita take on real life people getting into superhero suits in Kick-Ass #1. This "real life" superhero even has a MySpace profile. Is this a gimmick or is it a book worth picking up? Find out in this review. Is Thor #6 the Thor we've been waiting for? It's still early on in this series, but we think this book has finally arrived with this issue. Then Captain America #35, continues the great story arc with Bucky as the new Captain America. Justin calls it "an event comic written like a regular comic". In this Speed Round, we check out Good & Evil #1 which actually had some unexpected Biblical overtones, Ex Machina #34, Brave and The Bold #10 which is fun old school comic book action, Abyss #3, and Locke & Key #1 written by Joe Hill, Stephen King's son. In the mailbag: Metamorphic asks about our take on Mini-Series. Do more minis mean less attention to long-running series? Are more minis a good thing?

Archie Comics is an American comic book publisher headquartered in the Village of Mamaroneck, Town of Mamaroneck, New York, known for its many series featuring the fictional teenagers Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle and Jughead Jones. The characters were created by publisher/editor John L. Goldwater, written by Vic Bloom and drawn by Bob Montana. With the creation of Archie, publisher Goldwater hoped to appeal to fans of the Andy Hardy movies starring Mickey Rooney. Starting with issue #114, the title was shortened to simply Archie. DC Comics: Flashpoint pt. 1 - Time After Time (New 52)
Flashpoint is an American comic book crossover story arc published by DC Comics. Consisting of an eponymous core limited series and a number of tie-in titles, the storyline premiered in May 2011. The core miniseries series was written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kubert. The series details an altered DC Universe in which only Barry Allen, Kid Flash and Booster Gold seem to be aware of significant differences between the regular timeline and the altered one, including Cyborg's place as the quintessential hero, Superman's apparent detention by the government, and a Thomas Wayne version of Batman who spends "his days running Wayne Casinos." Consisting of a five-issue run, the series also crossed over with Booster Gold, sixteen three-issue miniseries, and a number of one-shots beginning in June 2011. DC also announced that Flash #12 would be the last in the series; a thirteenth issue had been announced for sale on May 25, 2011, but had since been withdrawn. Barry Allen wakes up to discover he is in an altered timeline in which Citizen Cold is Central City's greatest hero; his mother Nora (deceased in his own timeline) is alive; his father, Henry, died of a heart attack three years ago (instead of in prison); and that the Flash, the Justice League, and Superman do not exist. In Gotham City, Batman throws a criminal off a building before being confronted by Cyborg. “Comic book events” – dirty words or music to your ears? Like it or not, modern day superhero comic books are an event-driven enterprise. From "The Coming of Galactus" to Fear Itself and Flashpoint, comic book events drive sales, drive stories, and they define what’s “important” in the DC and Marvel Universes. This week on iFanboy, Josh, Conor, and Ron are talking comic book events. How do you define a comic book event? (They can’t agree on that.) Where did they come from? How have comic book events affected, and continue to affect, American comic books? And finally, each iFanboy picks their all-time favorite comic book event. Oh, and then Josh dies saving the universe or something. You decide!

Created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian-born artist Joe Shuster in 1932 while both were living in Cleveland, Ohio, and sold to Detective Comics, Inc. in 1938, the character first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June 30, 1938) and subsequently appeared in various radio serials, television programs, films, newspaper strips, and video games. With the success of his adventures, Superman helped to create the superhero genre and establish its primacy within the American comic book. The character's appearance is distinctive and iconic: a red, blue and yellow costume, complete with cape, like a circus costume, with a stylized "S" shield on his chest. This shield is now typically used across media to symbolize the character. The origin story of Superman relates that he was born Kal-El on the planet Krypton, before being rocketed to Earth as an infant by <b>...</b>

Frankie Boyle is a great comic book fan, and as a child he read old British comics, American comics like The Silver Surfer and in particular a Kirby comic with supervillains trapped in an asteroid prison. Frankie reads any comics he can get his hands on, taking the best from each one, and then reading edited versions to his kids. Recently he read Annihilation: Conquest, with characters like Rocket Racoon, and really enjoyed it. Frankie Boyle's son enjoys the comics too but his daughter less so as there is a lack of good female comic book characters, except perhaps for Fantastic Four. The Horror! The Horror! Comic Books the Government Didn't Want You to Read!
The Horror! The Horror! uncovers a rare treasury of some of the most important and neglected stories in American literature—the pre-Code horror comics of the 1950s. These outrageous comic book images, censored by Congress in an infamous televised US Senate subcommittee investigating juvenile delinquency in 1954, have rarely been seen since they were first published—and are revealed once again in all of their eye-popping glory. Jim Trombetta, in his commentary and informative text, provides a detailed history and context for these stories and their creators, spinning a tale of horror and government censorship as scary as the stories themselves. Bonus DVD--Confidential File, a rare 25-minute TV show that first aired on October 9, 1955, about the "evils" of comic books and their effect on juvenile delinquency is included with the book. Confidential File: Horror Comic Books!
A report by Paul Coates. Produced by Jim Peck. Directed by Irvin Kershner. Aired October 9, 1955. A KTTV Production, Los Angeles, for Times-Mirror. In 1954 the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency conducted an investigation into how the comic book industry was supposedly contributing to the moral decay of a nation's youth. The investigations were spurred on by a number of articles that blamed comics for the rise in juvenile delinquency in post-war America. Chief among the critics was Doctor Frederic Wertham, whose book, "Seduction of The Innocent" has been blamed for nearly single-handedly crippling the entire comics industry. In 1955, the comic book publishers formed the self-regulating organization, The Comics Code Authority, which great impacted on how comic books were perceived by the public and what kind of stories were told in the comics for decades. The effects of the virtual witch-hunt from this period in American history still has effect on the comic book industry to this day. "Confidential File" was aired in 1955, after the senate hearings and the formation of the Comics Code, but it serves as a perfect example of how the media reacted to the comic book industry, and sought a scape goat by blaming the comic book publications for society's own lack of responsibility in raising its children. A blame game that would later manifest itself when later TV cartoons, rock and roll music, Dungeons & Dragons, videogames, and so on would become the new whipping boy <b>...</b>

A Comic Book About Business Finance
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http You probably have heard of comic book heroes like Superman, Batman and Spiderman. But what about Tom the motorcycle shop owner, Joe Knight and Karen Berman? Tom, Joe and Karen all appear in a comic book called "Financial Intelligence." But Mr. Knight and Ms. Berman are real people. In two thousand six, they wrote a book called "Financial Intelligence: A Manager's Guide to Knowing What the Numbers Really Mean." It was written for people who need to learn quickly about accounting. The book explains, in simple ways, often-complex methods of keeping financial information. It became a best-seller. In June, publisher SmarterComics released a comic book that provides the same information in easy-to-understand, picture form. The new book is a combination of a textbook and a graphic novel. It tells the story of Tom, a mechanic who must quickly learn how to direct the motorcycle repair shop his father founded. Tom has no experience with finance, and is struggling with the business. Joe Knight and Karen Berman help him. Artist Dave Wachter made illustrations for the comic book.Franco Arda is the founder and head of SmarterComics. He formerly worked as an investment banker. He started the company almost three years ago with his own money. He wanted to create educational comic books that increase understanding. Franco Arda notes that many people grew up with comics. Comics Artist R. Crumb on Illustrating the Bible
Complete video at: fora.tv Legendary comic book artist Robert Crumb discusses his inspiration for illustrating the entire book of Genesis. The New Yorker's Francoise Mouly discusses the process of publishing Crumb's work, saying "we had to proofread the word of God." ----- The famed illustrator discusses his work with the art editor of The New Yorker, including his new book, an illustration of the "Book of Genesis", from the Creation to the death of Joseph. - WW Norton Robert Crumb is a leading figure in the history of American underground comics. As a child he spent hours creating elaborate storybooks with his brothers (a group effort reminiscent of the childhood creations of Emily Bronte and her sisters). In 1968 he began publishing Zap Comics, the series often credited with spurring the underground comics movement in America. Crumb's cartoon "Keep on Truckin'" -- an image of big-footed hipsters in a cheerful strut -- became a popular counterculture symbol, popping up on posters and T-shirts (most produced without Crumb's consent). He also drew a famous album cover for the band Big Brother and the Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin). Other Crumb characters include Flakey Foont, Angelfood McSpade, Devil Girl, and the irascible, bearded Mr. Natural. Fritz the Cat, Crumb's comically randy feline, was the star of an X-rated 1972 movie by animator Ralph Bakshi. Crumb, a 1995 documentary by Crumb's friend Terry Zwigoff, brought the cartoonist renewed notoriety and made <b>...</b>
