Apostolos (Tolis) Voskopoulos (Greek: Τόλης Βοσκόπουλος) (born 26 July 1940, Kokkinia, Piraeus) is one of the legends of modern Greek music. He also starred in many films and played in the Theatre in Athens.

One of Voskopoulos' greatest theatrical hits was Oi Erastes tou Oneirou (Dream Lovers), which he performed opposite Zoe Laskari. He now resides in Corfu Greece, where he gives concerts from time to time, some of them for charitable purposes. One of his latest charitable events was a spectacular free concert at the historic Palaio Frourio in Corfu in the summer of 2005.

Voskopoulos is married to former minister Angela Gerekou.^[1]

Sonata Arctica is a Finnish power metal band from the town of Kemi, originally assembled in 1995. Their later works (most notably The Days of Grays, Unia and a few tracks on Reckoning Night and Winterheart's Guild) contain several elements typical of progressive metal.^[1]

Biography[link]

Formation and early years (1996–1999)[link]

The band was founded by Marko Paasikoski, Jani Liimatainen and Tommy Portimo in Kemi at the end of 1995 (Tony Kakko and Pentti Peura joined in early 1996). Originally named Tricky Beans, they played hard rock rather than the power metal with which they grew to fame. During their early career, they recorded three demos which were never sent to any recording label — Friend 'till the End, Agre Pamppers and PeaceMaker.

In 1997 the band changed their name to Tricky Means, and from that point until 1999 their style was thoroughly worked upon and ultimately was drastically changed, acquiring strong emphasis on the keyboard melodies and relying on an easily distinguishable rhythm line maintained both by the bass and the guitar. Vocalist Tony Kakko developed a clean singing style which relies both on falsetto and tenor voices and second guitarist Marko Paasikoski left the band. Kakko has stated that the change of sound was influenced by fellow Finnish power metal band Stratovarius.^[2]

In 1999 (after they changed their name to Sonata Arctica), the band recorded a demo entitled FullMoon in Kemi's Tico Tico Studios, which was their first real metal recording. The line-up consisted of vocalist and keyboardist Tony Kakko, guitarist Jani Liimatainen, bassist Janne Kivilahti and drummer Tommy Portimo. The demo was sent to Spinefarm Records by a friend of the band and a recording deal soon followed.

[edit] Ecliptica and Silence (1999–2002)

Later that year, Sonata Arctica's first single, entitled "UnOpened" was released in Finland. It entered the Finnish Top 20 sales chart on the week of its release and, soon after, the band had closed deals with labels from around the world, prior to the release of their debut album. The debut Ecliptica arrived by the end of 1999 and had a worldwide release, obtaining rave reviews from the specialized press.^{[citation needed]}

Tony Kakko then decided to focus on singing and began seeking a new keyboard player for Sonata Arctica; Mikko Härkin (ex-Kenziner) was eventually invited to fill the position.

In the beginning of 2000, Sonata Arctica was chosen to support the well known power metal band Stratovarius throughout their European tour. Marko Paasikoski returned to the band to play bass in the wake of Janne Kivilahti's departure after the tour.

From late 2000 to late 2001, the band worked on composing and recording their next album — Silence — which was released in June 2001. An extensive tour followed, which included concerts throughout Europe (together with Gamma Ray) and Japan. In 2002 Sonata Arctica made its first incursion to America, putting on shows in Brazil and Chile. According to some of the musicians from the band, it was one of their best tours to date — the other being the Japanese tour from 2003. A live album entitled Songs of Silence was also released that year, consisting of gigs from their tour in Japan. By the end of 2002, Mikko Härkin left the band due to personal reasons.

[edit] Winterheart's Guild (2003)

Their third album — Winterheart's Guild — was recorded with the help of the seasoned keyboard player Jens Johansson from Stratovarius who recorded the keyboard solos, while Kakko took care of the basics. The album was released in 2003.

In the search for another keyboardist, the band received many applications and two of them were invited for auditions. Since they were well aware of the candidates' ability, the band decided to pick the new member based on personality. To this end they spent a night drinking with each of the potentials in order to find out which one would fit best into the band's personality and mentality. Henrik Klingenberg was eventually chosen and joined the band in time to take part in the tour that followed the release of Winterheart's Guild. Most of the concerts on the tour were sold out.

With the end of their contract with Spinefarm Records, the band received invitations from most European recording labels, and eventually opted for Nuclear Blast.

[edit] Reckoning Night (2004–2005)

In early 2004, the band was chosen as the opener for Iron Maiden's Japanese tour. Additionally, Tommy Portimo became a father; his wife gave birth to a baby girl in March. Reckoning Night was recorded in three months and released in October. Both the single and the EP of this release remained on the top of the Finnish charts simultaneously for over six weeks. A promotional tour was to follow, but Sonata Arctica was invited by the popular Nightwish to join their European tour, and thus made a change of plans. The concerts that followed were played for audiences of over ten thousand people. Fans took notice that Reckoning Night was more progressive than previous Sonata Arctica albums. At that time in interviews, Tony Kakko and Henrik Klingenberg began to claim that they saw themselves as more so just a rock band than Power Metal. Another notable feature about this album was that Henrik Klingenberg introduced use of the organ to the band.

In early 2005, Nightwish invited the band to open the concerts of their North American tour. This tour eventually got cancelled, but the members of Sonata Arctica opted to still make a short tour, playing concerts in Canada and the USA. On October 21, 2005, Sonata Arctica opened for Nightwish at the Hartwall Areena, Helsinki.

[edit] For the Sake of Revenge and Winterheart's Guild video game (2006)

In 2006, the band released a live CD and DVD entitled For the Sake of Revenge, which was recorded in Tokyo in February 2005. Then, Spinefarm Records released a compilation album in order to get the most out of their contract with the band, since Sonata Arctica changed their recording label. The compilation is entitled The End of This Chapter and was released in Japan in August 2005 and in Europe in May 2006.

A computer video game was also planned, based on Sonata Arctica characters and music. The name of the game was going to be Winterheart's Guild, like their album. The game was to be developed by Zelian Games, and was to be an Action-RPG in a style between Fallout and Diablo. The game was cancelled for unannounced reasons but a demo was shown at the Leipzig video game conference in 2006, featuring Henrik Klingenberg as the playable character. In December 2006, the band began recording their fifth studio album.

[edit] Unia (2007–2008)

On May 25, 2007, Unia was released. The album's first single, "Paid In Full", was released on April 27, 2007. Interestingly, the cover for Unia features a barely perceptible image of a person's hair and eyes looking out through a crack in the background in the lower right-hand corner. It is likely an allusion to the person in the song "Caleb".

On August 6, 2007, the band announced on their website that guitarist Jani Liimatainen had been asked to leave the band due to problems related to his conscription. He was replaced by Elias Viljanen who had already filled in for him in the band's Finnish and Japanese shows during the spring and summer.

In October 2007 Sonata Arctica headlined the ProgPower USA VIII. Later the band supported Nightwish across their 2008 tour of United States and Canada and headlined at the shows that Nightwish cancelled due to Anette Olzon's sudden severe sickness.^[3]

In 2008 Tony Kakko collaborated with English singer/songwriter and arranger Mark Deeks to perform choral arrangements of some of the band's works at a special one off concert at The Sage Centre in Gateshead.

It was announced on September 4, 2008 that the band's first two albums would be re-released with bonus tracks by Spinefarm UK on October 6.^[4]

[edit] The Days of Grays (2009-2011)

Sonata Arctica's latest album was released on September 16, 2009 in Finland and September 22 in the USA.^[5] Henrik stated that the new album would be in the same vein as Unia, but not as complex and darker.^[5] Singles from this album include "Flag in the Ground" and "The Last Amazing Grays". On August 28, 2009, the music video of "Flag In The Ground" was released to the web. The limited 2CD European edition of the album featured many of the album tracks with all instruments performed by a symphony orchestra.^[6]

The band also recently toured with DragonForce for the third U.S. leg of the Ultra Beatdown tour, and will be touring the US "two or three times," as well as doing a European tour and Asian tour covering Indonesia, Taiwan, China, and Japan. In early 2010 they engaged on an Australian tour with Ensiferum and Melbourne band Vanishing Point.

In April 2010, Sonata Arctica embarked on their USA and Canada Headlining tour for The Days of Grays. In October they headlined in Chile in support of the same album.^[7]

[edit] Stones Grow Her Name (since 2011)

In January 2011, the band hinted in an online interview for Metaleater magazine that they are currently writing songs for a new album while on their current tour. Elias is quoted as saying, "I've been working on some new riffs, quite dark. Tony's been stuck in his bed scratching notes about some girl and her 'Luna Lust'." Tommy states later, "We've just got back from Cozumel, we had a good time, had lots of beers, loads more sun and thought about putting a bit more Queen stuff back into the music again."

While playing in Wolverhampton, Tony stated to the audience that they were in fact hoping to start recording the new album this autumn and have it available for purchase before summer 2012.

In April, the band recorded a live DVD in Oulu, Finland, entitled "Live in Finland", which was released on November 11, 2011 (11/11/11).

It was announced on February 20, 2012 through the official Sonata Arctica website that the new album entitled Stones Grow Her Name would be released on May 18 in Europe and May 22 in North America .^[8][9]

In a 2007 interview with C.B.Liddell, Tony Kakko cited the English rock band Queen as his biggest musical influence. "A lot of people seem to mention a Queen influence in our music," he said. "Queen have always been the biggest band for me."^[10]

Lance Thomas (born April 24, 1988) is an American professional basketball player who plays for the New Orleans Hornets of the NBA. Thomas formerly played for Duke University Blue Devils men's basketball team. He is from Scotch Plains, New Jersey but was born in Brooklyn, New York. He started at power forward for Duke's national champion 2010 team. For the 2010–11 season and parts of the 2011-12 season, Thomas played for the Austin Toros of the NBA D-League.

Thomas originally attended Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. He was highly recruited out of high school, choosing Duke over Rutgers, Wake Forest, Connecticut, Arizona, Florida, and Georgia Tech.

While playing for Danny Hurley, former Seton Hall point guard, (brother of former Duke point guard Bobby Hurley) at Newark Saint Benedict's Preparatory School, he led the school to two Prep A Division New Jersey State titles while averaging 14.5 PPG and 6.5 RPG his senior year. He was named to the 2006 McDonald's All-America team, and had nine points and two steals in the McDonald's All-American game.

USA U18 National Team[link]

He also played on the USA U18 National team,^[when?] which won the gold medal at the FIBA Americas U18 tournament. However, he barely saw the floor and only averaged 0.5 PPG and 1.0 RPG.

In his freshman year, he averaged 4.0 PPG and 2.5 RPG. In his sophomore year, he averaged 4.3 PPG and 3.3 RPG. His career-high in points came on November 28, 2008, when he scored 21 points against Duquesne.^[1]

2009–10

In 2009–10, he and Jon Scheyer were co-captains of the Duke team. He had a career-high 12 rebounds against NC State in January 2010.^[1]

Duke won the national championship against the Gordon Hayward led Butler Bulldogs 61–59, with Thomas on the floor after having played 35 minutes of the game, and shot 3–5 from the field.^[2] He said:

The last 30 seconds seemed like 10 minutes. When the ball bounced off, confetti came down. I looked up at the confetti, and the next thing I know I'm on my back. Jon (Scheyer) tackled me. At that point, it hit home that we were national champions.^[2]

He ended his career 10th on Duke's all-time list in offensive rebounds (255).^[3] In 2009–10 he averaged 4.8 points and 4.9 rebounds in 25.3 minutes per game, and led the team in charges taken with 16.^[4][5] He was also voted to the ACC All-Defensive team.^[4]

Pro career[link]

Thomas was drafted by the Austin Toros in the NBA D-League. He began the 2011-12 season with the New Orleans Hornets, but on December 31, 2011, he was waived and returned to the Toros. Just over a month later, New Orleans re-signed Thomas to contract. He scored a career high 18 points for the Hornets on March 9, 2012. Thomas got his first career start against the Spurs on March 24, 2012, going 4-8 from the floor with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Giannis Ploutarhos (Greek: Γιάννης Πλούταρχος; born 18 December 1970) is a popular Greek singer and songwriter. He is considered one of the most popular laïko singers of his time, and has been characterized with having a genuine laïko voice.^[1] To date, he has released 11 studio albums along with one greatest hits album.

Early life[link]

Giannis Ploutarhos was born as Giannis Kakossaios on 18 December 1970 in the small village of Mavrogia, outside Orchomenos.^[1] Ploutarhos comes from a poor rural family, which long struggled to make ends meet.^[1] He first started singing at age six, while his whole family would sing while working to get through the day. His first musical influences came from Dimotiká and traditional Byzantine music.^[1] Ploutarhos lived there until the age of sixteen, at which point he decided to move to Athens to pursue his dream of becoming a singer.^[2] He had told his family he wanted to move the Athens to study Hairdressing.^[1]

Once in Athens, Ploutarhos began working during the day at a hair salon while singing at clubs at night. His first gig was at a small club in Korydallos.^[1] Disappointed by the prevailing conditions in the music business, he abandoned singing twice and pursued other occupations to support himself.^[2] Despite previous disappointments, Ploutarhos' love of music pushed him back into the business and just two years after his first performance, he started appearing at club Rodolfo, which was followed by appearances at bigger clubs such as Neraida, Fantasia, and Tonel where he collaborated with well known laïka names such as Giannis Poulopoulos, Rita Sakellariou, Themis Adamantidis, as well as Contemporary aïka artists such as Stelios Rokkos and Giorgos Mazonakis.^[1] Around that time, Ploutarhos came into contact with Dimitris Kardatzis and Ilias Filippou who believed in his talent, and got him in touch with his first producer Girgos Makrakis, who is credited with inspiring his stage last name "Ploutarhos".^[1]

1998–2004: Debut and early success[link]

In late 1998, Ploutarhos signed with Minos EMI and shortly after released his debut album titled Mono Esi (Only you), which received moderate success.^[3] From the album, "Enas Theos" (One god) became a hit, which is still considered one of his most popular songs to date.^[2] After his first album, he was featured in a duet titled "I Kardia Mou Einai Zalismeni" (My heart is dazed) with Konstantina on her album Simeio Epafis, while he was also featured in a duet with Stratos Dionysiou on the song "Orestiada" from his album Epivalletai.^[1] In 2000, he released his second album titled Ipirhan Orki (There were promises), which featured a number of hits. The album was certified gold, making him widely known and catapulting his career to new heights, and eventually leading sales to platinum status.^[1][3] A year later in 2001 he released his third album titled Mikres Fotografies (Small pictures), which sold over 150,000 units,^[2] and included a number of songs written by himself.^[3] At the 2002 Arion Music Awards, Ploutarhos received five awards, including "Singer of the year", "Best laiko singer", as well as "Album of the year", "Best laiko album", and "Best video-clip" for his album Mikres Fotografies and songs off of it.^[2]

In 2002 he released his fourth studio album titled Den Einai O Erotas...Paidi Tis Logikis (Love is not....a child of logic) which was later re-released in 2003 with the inclusion of bonus tracks and a DVD. The album was eventually certified 3x platinum.^[2] That same year in 2003, Ploutarhos released his fifth studio album Pai Ligos Kairos (Some time has passed by...), which was also certified 3x platinum. The album was re-released in 2004 with the inclusion of a bonus song, a cover of the popular song "An Thimitheis T' Oneiro Mou" by Mikis Theodorakis. At the same time, Ploutarhos broke records for continuous appearances at a venue, appearing at club Poseidonio as part of a concert series for one whole calendar year without interruption.^[2]

2005–2010: Further success[link]

In 2005 Ploutarhos embarked on his first world tour, with shows in Toronto, Atlantic City, Boston, New York City, Chicago, Melbourne, Sydney, Johannesburg, and Nicosia.^[2] Upon return to Greece, he released his sixth studio album titled Ola Se Sena Ta Vrika (I've found it all in you), which was a commercial success.^[4] The album was eventually certified 2x platinum.^[2]

On 18 September 2006, he released his seventh studio album titled Krimmena Mistika (Hidden secrets), which sold more than 40,000 units and was certified Platinum in its first week.^[5][6] The album was also released in a special edition form with the inclusion of a bonus DVD, while few days later on 20 September, Ploutarhos began appearances at club Kentro Athinon.^[5] The album, which also featured a duet with Kostantina titled "Ti Bike Anamesa Mas;" (What came between us?),^[4] was eventually certified 2x platinum.^[7]

A greatest hits album titled Stigmes (Moments) followed in 2007, which included six new songs and a bonus DVD.^[8] The album was eventually certified Platinum, exceeding sales of 40,000 units.^[9] In October 2007, Ploutarhos embarked on a mini US tour, performing in Toronto, New York, Montreal, and Foxwoods.^[10] Upon his return to Greece, Ploutarhos started appearing in a concert series at club Kentro Athinon alongside Apostolia Zoi, Tamta and Giannis Vardis on 25 October.^[9]

In June 2008, Ploutarhos released his eight studio album titled O,ti Gennietai Stin Psihi (Whatever is born in the soul),^[11] which was also certified 2x platinum.^[2] On 17 July, he started appearances at club Politeia in Thessaloniki.^[12] In December 2008, he started appearances at club REX.^[13] A few days later on 22 December 2008, Plourahos performed a charity concert for children with disabilities at club REX.^[14] In May 2009, Ploutarhos traveled to Australia to perform two charity concerts in Sydney and Melbourne. That summer, Ploutarhos partnered with MAD Greekz and embarked on his first major tour around Greece.^[15] In October of the same year, Ploutarhos held concerts in London and Cyprus. He continued touring, and in January 2010, toured North American performing in Vancouver, Foxwoods, Montreal, Atlantic City, Chicago, Toronto, and Sacramento.^[2]

On 22 March 2010, Ploutarhos released his ninth studio album titled Prosopika Dedomena.^[16] The album was released in record stores and at Newsstands, and quickly sold out forcing his label to reissued the album.^[17] It was eventually certified 6x platinum.^[2][18] In April of the same year, he started appearing at club ACRO, while for the winter season 2010–2011 he started performing at club CosmoStage.

2011–present: New label & projects[link]

In December 2010, Ploutarhos left his long time label Minos EMI, and signed with Heaven Music.^[2] Shortly after, he announced a joint project with Italian singer Albano Carrisi.^[2][19] On 24 January 2011, their first single titled "Me Mia Matia/Felicita" (With one look/Happiness) was released to radio stations, featuring verses in both Greek and Italian.^[20] On 6 February 2011, Ploutarhos released a joint album with Carrisi titled Dio Fones-Mia Psihi (Two Voices-One Soul) in Greece as a covermount with Proto Thema.^[20] Proto Thema sold over 160,000 copies, selling out completely in just a few hours.^[21] A standard retail released followed on 7 February 2011, with two bonus songs included.^[21] On 17 February 2011, Ploutarhos will be taking part in the Sanremo Music Festival along side Albano Carrisi and Spanish operatic soprano Montserrat Caballé.^[22] The trio will perform a famous chorus piece titled "Va, pensiero" from the opera Nabucco written by Giuseppe Verdi.^[22] Ploutarhos' appearance will mark the first time a Greek singer has ever performed at Sanremo Music Festival.^[22]

On November 22, 2011, Ploutarhos will release his eleventh studio album titled I Dinami Tou Erota (The Strength of Love).^[23]

Personal life[link]

As of 2011, Ploutarhos and his wife have been together for 23 years, and have five children together.^[24] He is distinguished by his low profile and modesty despite the success he has received. Plouarhos has stated that he respects and appreciates his fans, and tries to watch his behavior as he believes every artist should be a role model for their fans, especially young fans.^[1]
