Crucible of Empire, The Spanish-American War 1/8
Crucible of Empire, The Spanish-American War 1/8
14:22
Teddy Roosevelt charging up the San Juan Heights, the Rough Riders and the sinking of the battleship, the USS Maine---these are what people commonly know about the United States' war with Spain in 1898. What they may not remember is that this was the war that steered the United States to center stage as a world power. Victorious over Spain in Cuba and the Philippines, the United States, a nation founded in opposition to imperialism, grappled with its new role as an imperial power. More recent events in Vietnam, Somalia, and Yugoslavia bear striking parallels to those of 1898. Even in its own time, the war with Spain was understood as a turning point in American history. Hollande to push for eurbonds at EU Summit
Hollande to push for eurbonds at EU Summit
2:16
EU leaders are gathering in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss how to kick-start growth in Europe while keeping deficits down. New French President Francois Hollande has increasingly been putting pressure on German Chancellor Angela Merkel to reconsider her negative views on Euro bonds, bonds jointly underwritten by all eurozone member states. Hollande warned on Saturday during a G8 Summit in Camp David that he is not alone in supporting the proposal. Italy's Monti, Spain's Rajoy and the EC are expected to back the idea. As the biggest economy in Europe, mutualizing common European debt would mean Germany having to finance sovereign debt from other countries. Merkel has already said she does not rule out euro bonds as a long-term prospect, but under one condition: a more integrated political and fiscal European Union. Cube Spin Greece and the unofficial talk of a Greek euro exit are also set to be discussed. After the elections earlier this month, the Greek political parties failed to form a government, so new elections have been called for the 17th of June, less than two weeks before the next EU summit. Radical left-wing group Syriza is set to become the biggest political party and they completely oppose the severe austerity measures imposed by Brussels and the IMF. The European commission wants Greece to stay inside the euro area. Because of the political disagreements, talk of a Greek euro exit is no longer taboo. It's a prospect that certainly will be discussed again in ... Related article

Obama Health Care Law Heads to Supreme Court Today

A question at the heart of the American experiment--the reach of federal power--returns to the Supreme Court Monday, when the justices open three days of argument over President Barack Obama's health-care overhaul. At issue, the administration's allies say, is Congress' constitutional power to address national problems with comprehensive solutions. In jeopardy, critics counter, is a concept of liberty that disables the national government from entire categories of regulation, reserving essential decisions over health and safety to the states. Palestinian Hunger Strike Ends
Palestinian Hunger Strike Ends

Via Reuters: "Most of some 1600 prisoners, a third of the 4800 Palestinians in Israeli jails, began refusing food on April 17 although a few had been fasting much longer - up to 77 days. Their protest centered on demands for more family visits, an end to solitary confinement and an end to so-called "administrative detention", a practice that has drawn international criticism on human rights grounds. Palestinian officials said Egypt had drafted an agreement in Cairo with representatives of the Palestinian prisoners, and that inmates met during the day and had agreed to the terms. There was no immediate word from the prisoners as to whether any had actually ended their strike. An Egyptian official involved in the talks said that under Monday's deal to end the strike, Israel had agreed to end solitary confinement for 19 prisoners and lifted a ban on visits to prisoners by relatives living in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. NATO in meeting after Syria shot down Turkish war plane
NATO in meeting after Syria shot down Turkish war plane
2:11
NATO has assembled for a special session after Syria shot down a Turkish war plane which it said had gone into Syrian airspace. This follows the letter Turkey sent to the UN Security Council, which described the incident as a "hostile act by the Syrian authorities against Turkey's national security. A Syrian foreign ministry official speaking at a press conference said his country has reacted in a defensive and sovereign way to the Turkish war jet which entered Syrian airspace on Friday, adding that the breach is an encroachment upon the country's sovereignty. This is what he had to say. Over in Turkey a Middle Eastern expert said Syria wants to show they are a force to be reckoned with. Speaking in Turkish this is what he said. "In my opinion, Syria wants to send a clear message to Turkey that the Syrian government is strong and it is impossible for any external forces to subvert the regime." This is the latest downturn in the previously good Syrian-Turkish relations, which have hit rock bottom since unrest in Syria began last year. The two sides had been close allies before the Turkish government turned against the government of Bashar al-Assad. Turkey has opened its borders to harbour Syrian refugees who have allegedly escaped the violence in their hometowns. Meanwhile, Syria has also accused their northern neighbour of harbouring armed elements and army defectors. Written and Presented by Ann Salter Related article

Schultz: No need to discuss Eurobonds; agreement on growth and employment measures needed this year
1:15
On arriving at the June 28 EU Summit, European Parliament President Martin Schultz said that discussing Eurobonds is futile. Instead, the Council should focus on reaching an inter interinstitutional agreement on growth and employment measures. "There is no need to discuss Eurobonds further; we need unanimity and there is none. Mrs. Merkel even linked her life to this question. There are other things that can be done: a debt redemption fund or banking licence for ESM to help Spain and Italy." "I hope that the Council decides today to react on the proposition made by Mr. Barroso and myself to reach an interinstitutional agreement among the Commission, the Council and the Parliament that will commit all three of us into applying all necessary measures for employment and growth by the end of the year." "When you pool together 130 billion euros that have not been used and use it, then you have a considerable conjuncture programme." Related article
