Lion attack: American tourist mauled to death at South African safari park - TomoNews

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — A 22-year-old American woman was killed and another man seriously injured Monday, after they were both pulled through a car window by a lion at Gauteng Lion Park. The two unidentified tourists were reportedly driving through the lion park with the windows open, the Daily Mail reports. Lanseria police have launched an investigation into the incident, which was witnessed by other tourists at the park. ENCA reports, one of the female lions jumped through the passenger window and bit the woman, while the unidentified man was injured when he tried to push the massive cat out of the vehicle. By the time park staff and emergency responders reached the couple it was already too late. The woman succumbed to her injuries. According to the Daily Mail, the fatal incident is the park's third major attack in just four short months. In March, Australian tourist, Brendan Smith was mauled by a lion and two days later a 13-year-old boy was attacked by a cheetah. Although the park gives clear instructions to all visitors to keep windows closed when touring the area, Scott Simpson, assistant operations manager at the park told ENCA he doesn't "understand why people think it's okay to leave windows open."
