Nova Scotia (Latin for "New Scotland", pronounced in English as /ˌnoʊvə ˈskoʊʃə/) (French: Nouvelle-Écosse; Scottish Gaelic: Alba Nuadh; Scots: New Alba) is one of Canada's three Maritime provinces, and one of the four provinces which form Atlantic Canada. Its provincial capital is Halifax. Nova Scotia is the second-smallest province in Canada, with an area of 55,284 square kilometres (21,300 sq mi), including Cape Breton and another 3,800 coastal islands. As of 2011, the population was 921,727, making Nova Scotia the second-most-densely populated province in Canada.
Nova Scotia means New Scotland in Latin and is the recognized English language name for the province. In Scottish Gaelic, the province is called Alba Nuadh, which also simply means New Scotland. The province was first named in the 1621 Royal Charter granting the right to settle lands including modern Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula to Sir William Alexander in 1632.
Graphic design is the process of visual communication, and problem-solving through the correct use of typography, space, image and color.
The field is considered a subset of visual communication and communication design, but sometimes the term "graphic design" is used interchangeably with these due to overlapping skills involved. Graphic designers use various methods to create and combine words, symbols, and images to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use a combination of typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce a final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated.
Common uses of graphic design include identity (logos and branding), publications (magazines, newspapers and books), print advertisements, posters, billboards, website graphics and elements, signs and product packaging. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as images, shapes and color which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design, especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements.
An art school is an educational institution with a primary focus on the visual arts, especially illustration, painting, photography, sculpture, and graphic design. Art schools are institutions with elementary, secondary, post-secondary or undergraduate, or graduate or postgraduate programs in these areas. They are distinguished from larger institutions which also may offer majors or degrees in the visual arts, but only as one part of a broad-based range of programs (such as the liberal arts and sciences). France's École des Beaux-Arts is, perhaps, the first model for such organized instruction, breaking with a tradition of master and apprentice instruction when it was formed.

Curated by David Diviney Looking to Garry Neill Kennedy’s 2012 published book of the same title as the foundation for this exhibition, The Last Art College: Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, 1968-1978 aims to provide an in-depth examination of how a small art college in Nova Scotia became the epicenter of art education—and to a large extent of the post-minimalist and conceptual art world itself—in the 1960s and 1970s. Under Kennedy’s direction, the activities of the college during this formative era redefined the means and methods of pedagogy and the shape of artistic practice far beyond the city of Halifax. - See more at: http://saag.ca/art/exhibitions/0715-the-last-art-college:-nova-scotia-college-of-art-and-design,-1968-1978#sthash.OQoDaSLu.dpuf

This video was a request by bizarrpeeps to drive from Clifton Street to the end of Marginal Road by taking Duke and Hollis Street. I started a bit before the Robie/North intersection and ended at Point Pleasant Park. The drive takes you from the North End, along the Halifax Commons, past the Halifax Armoury and Citadel Hill National Historic Site, down Duke Street past the Halifax Metro Centre toward the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) before turning right onto Hollis and through the city's financial district. Hollis ends at the VIA Rail and bus terminal where we turn left onto Marginal Road where we pass the historic Pier 21 before heading through the Halifax Seaport and HalTerm, one of the city's two container terminals. Enjoy the ride.

Travel video about destination Halifax in Canada. Halifax is part of Canada's federal state of Nova Scotia. The peninsula has a population of 333,000 and it is the country's oldest British settlement, yet has managed to retain all the charm and tranquility of a small town. After Sydney, Halifax has the second largest harbor in the world and is one of the region's few harbors that is free from ice throughout the year. Lobsters, oysters, mussels and fish soup are but a few of the menu items that appear in the seafood restaurants of the Atlantic District. The Maritime Museum covers the history of the fishing industry on Canada's Atlantic coastline and also the history of navigation. Boats and small models illustrate the development of ship-building and include great seafarers and many rema...

In this new theme for Surf Sufficient, we will periodically connect with different travelers and share their views on hitting the road. He's since worked to save enough money then travel the world several times over in a uniquely minimalist style that often includes bicycling long distances. He's known for having biked from Nova Scotia to Central America, having a penchant for stubbie twin fins, and going on anti-materialist rants over a good beer. In short he's one of the best humans we know. Last week, we were lucky enough to have him peddle through the Korduroy headquarters, midway through another continental journey en route to somewhere in Central America. For over 35 years Sandra Meigs has created vivid, immersive, and enigmatic paintings that combine complex narratives with comic elements. Meigs is dedicated to the possibilities of enchantment that painting presents through colour and form. She believes that the very authenticity of one’s experience offers proof that what is imagined when looking at a painting is as real as anything else that one experiences in the world. Born in Baltimore in 1953, Meigs studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (B.F.A. 1975) and Dalhousie University (M.A. 1980). Sandra Meigs has been a dedicated teacher at the University of Victoria for over 20 years. Represented by: Susan Hobbs Gallery This Talk took place: September 24, 2015, 7pm, NCB 113
Lecture of Michel Masson about the sculptor’s work and its relation with architecture Dan Graham began his art career in the early 60’s by chance when he was invited to became partner of a very active but short life gallery called John Daniels Art Gallery in New York. Graham was broken after joining this initiative thus he had to return to his parents house and during the trip he had the chance to observe the “new city”. Homes for America was inspired by that experience, a notorious photographic essay about mass housing in North America suburbs, and which integrates the first magazines set of his works. Later Graham joined Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, it was the beginning of a phase in which he expressed interest in video, performance, and installation. This phase cul...
Born in Halifax, Zoe attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (now NSCAD University), receiving an MFA in 1977. She taught part-time at the college, and in the meantime (beginning in 1974), began working on Sable Island as a volunteer cook and field assistant with Dalhousie University researchers studying seals. By 1982, she was involved full-time with Sable projects, conducting various research and monitoring programs which included studies of terrain restoration and dune vegetation, persistent litter in the marine environment, and shark predation on seals. Her long-term projects include research on the Sable Island horses, beach surveys for oiled seabirds and stranded cetaceans, and biodiversity studies (mosses, lichens, fungi, and invertebrates). Keynote: Archives Lost, Found, Re-assembled Professor Charlotte Townsend Gault Consider two very different 'archives': one, a repository of the evanescent, assembled during the 1968-1973 heyday of international conceptual art at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design; the other the print archive of Northwest Coast Indigenous art, perverse in being a textual repository, a historiography, of oral cultures. One example is relatively trivial in this comparison. Historical repression and the intentional suppression of memory, has had tragic and persistent consequences for Canada's Indigenous populations and for the Canadian state. However these archives can be productively juxtaposed being simultaneously incidental to their subjects in significant ways, and indispensible to recovery, re-en...
The Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium September 28, 2015 Vito Acconci, "Everything I Know Will Be Yours: Surveillance In Plein Air" Bio: The influential, provocative and often radical art-making practices of Vito Acconci have earned him international recognition. Acconci has been a vital presence in contemporary art since the late 1960s; his confrontational and ultimately political works have evolved from writing through conceptual art, bodyworks, performance, film, video, multimedia installation and architectural sculpture. In the 1970s, Acconci produced a body of conceptual, performance-based video works that retain an astonishing originality and force more than thirty years later. Acconci used video as a vehicle for an intimate expression of self through the other, exploiting bot...

i watch the objects form in cloudy skies
a bat, a pirate ship and then her eyes
so i pound a shot down
punch
my arm, set up a new round
till me, myself and i cant concentrate
the clouds conspire to show me what i miss
her hair, her cheeks, her lips puckered up to kiss
the wind blows
drags her nose
through her forehead like a horn grows
the omen
clear but years too late
nova scotia's so damn cold yeah
and i moved here to give her space
drinking stoli to kill my
memory
theres not enough to lose her face
she poisoned our hometown
so i moved a half a world away
where frozen
winter chokes the color
