death cab for cutie Biography

Death Cab for Cutie, the indie rock band, was formed in 1997 in Bellingham, Washington. Band members include Ben Gibbard (guitar, vocals), Chris Walla (production, guitar), Jason McGerr (drums) and Nick Harmer (bass). The band name was taken by Gibbard from a Vivian Stanshall and Neil Innes song title and performed by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band in Magical Mystery Tour, the 1967 Beatles film. The name of the song was taken from a crime pulp fiction magazine.

“You Can Play These Songs with Chords,” the first album and demo from Gibbard, led to a Barsuk Records record deal. Gibbard then decided to expand into a full band and start recruiting band members. To date Death Cab for Cutie has released one demo, six albums and five EPs. “Narrow Stairs,” their latest album, was released May 2008. “Codes and Keys,” their forthcoming album, is scheduled to be released in May 2011.

In 1998, the band released “Something About Airplanes.” The set received favorable reviews from the scene of independent music. “We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes” was released in 2000 and “The Photo Album” in 2001. “Transatlanticism” was released in 2003 and tracks from that album appeared on several television shows as well as the films Mean Creek and Wedding Crashers.

Following the success of “Transatlanticism,” Death Cab for Cutie signed with Atlantic Records. The band released “Plans” in 2005 and the set was well received by fans and critics. “Narrow Stairs” was released in 2008 and reached No. 1 on Billboard's 200 chart.
