Vice is a practice or a behavior or habit considered immoral, depraved, or degrading in the associated society. In more minor usage, vice can refer to a fault, a defect, an infirmity, or merely a bad habit. Synonyms for vice include fault, depravity, sin, iniquity, wickedness, and corruption. The modern English term that best captures its original meaning is the word ''vicious'', which means "full of vice". In this sense, the word ''vice'' comes from the Latin word ''vitium'', meaning "failing or defect". Vice is the opposite of virtue.

Law enforcement [link]

Depending on the country or jurisdiction, vice crimes may or may not be treated as a separate category in the criminal codes. Even in jurisdictions where vice is not explicitly delineated in the legal code, the term ''vice'' is often used in law enforcement and judicial systems as an umbrella for crimes involving activities that are considered inherently immoral, regardless of the legality or objective harm involved.

In the United Kingdom, the term ''vice'' is commonly used in law and law enforcement to refer to criminal offenses related to prostitution and pornography. In the United States, the term is also used to refer to crimes related to gambling, alcohol, and drugs.

Christians believe there are two kinds of vice:

Vices that come from the physical organism as instincts, which can become perverse (such as lust)

Vices that come from false idolatry in the spiritual realm

The first kind of vice, though sinful, is believed less serious than the second. Vices recognized as spiritual by Christians include blasphemy (holiness betrayed), apostasy (faith betrayed), despair (hope betrayed), hatred (love betrayed), and indifference (scripturally, a "hardened heart"). Christian theologians have reasoned that the most destructive vice equates to a certain type of pride or the complete idolatry of the self. It is argued that through this vice, which is essentially competitive, all the worst evils come into being. In Judeo-Christian creeds, it originally led to the Fall of Man, and, as a purely diabolical spiritual vice, it outweighs anything else often condemned by the Church.

==== Roman Catholicism ==== The Roman Catholic Church distinguishes between vice, which is a habit inclining one to sin, and the sin itself, which is an individual morally wrong act. Note that in Roman Catholicism, the word "sin" also refers to the state that befalls one upon committing a morally wrong act. In this section, the word always means the sinful act. It is the sin, and not the vice, that deprives one of God's sanctifying grace and renders one deserving of God's punishment. Thomas Aquinas taught that "absolutely speaking, the sin surpasses the vice in wickedness". On the other hand, even after a person's sins have been forgiven, the underlying habit (the vice) may remain. Just as vice was created in the first place by repeatedly yielding to the temptation to sin, so vice may be removed only by repeatedly resisting temptation and performing virtuous acts; the more entrenched the vice, the more time and effort needed to remove it. Saint Thomas Aquinas says that following rehabilitation and the acquisition of virtues, the vice does not persist as a habit, but rather as a mere disposition, and one that is in the process of being eliminated. Medieval illuminated manuscripts circulated with colorful schemas for developing proper attitudes, with scriptural allusions modelled on nature: the tree of virtues as blossoming flowers or vices bearing sterile fruit, The Renaissance writer Pietro Bembo is credited with reaffirming and promoting the Christian perfection of classical humanism. Deriving all from love (or the lack thereof) his schemas were added as supplements in the newly-invented technology of printing by Aldus Manutius in his editions of Dante's Divine Comedy dating from early in the 16th century.

Dante's seven deadly vices [link]

The poet Dante Alighieri listed the following seven deadly vices associating them structurally as flaws in the soul's inherent capacity for goodness as made in the Divine Image yet perverted by the Fall:

#Pride or vanity — an excessive love of the self (holding the self outside of its proper position regarding God or fellows; Dante's definition was "love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbor"). In the Latin lists of the Seven Deadly Sins, pride is referred to as ''superbia''. #Envy or jealousy — resentment of others for their possessions (Dante: "love of one's own good perverted to a desire to deprive other men of theirs"). In the Latin lists of the Seven Deadly Sins, envy is referred to as ''invidia''. #Wrath or anger — feelings of hatred, revenge or denial, as well as punitive desires outside of justice (Dante's description was "love of justice perverted to revenge and spite"). In the Latin lists of the Seven Deadly Sins, wrath is referred to as ''ira'', which primitive vices tempt astray by increasingly perverting the proper purpose of charity. directing it inwards leading to a disorded navel-gazing preoccupation with personal goods in isolation absent proper harmonious relations leading to violent disruption of balance with others. #Sloth or laziness — idleness and wastefulness of time or other allotted resources. Laziness is condemned because it results in others having to work harder; also, useful work will not be done. Sloth is referred to in Latin as ''accidie'' or ''acedia'', which vice tempts a self-aware soul to be too easily satisfied, thwarting charity's purpose as insufficiently perceptible within the soul itself or abjectly indifferent in relationship with the needs of others and their satisfaction, an escalation in evil, more odious than the passion of hate #Avarice (covetousness, greed) — a desire to possess more than one has need or use for (or according to Dante, "excessive love of money and power"). In the Latin lists of the Seven Deadly Sins, avarice is referred to as ''avaritia''. #Gluttony — overindulgence in food, drink or intoxicants, or misplaced desire of food as a pleasure for its sensuality ("excessive love of pleasure" was Dante's rendering). In the Latin lists of the Seven Deadly Sins, gluttony is referred to as ''gula''. #Lust — excessive sexual desire. Dante's criterion was that "lust detracts from true love". In the Latin lists of the Seven Deadly Sins, lust is referred to as ''luxuria'', which vices tempt cultivated souls in their ability to direct charity's proper purpose to good things or actions, by indulging excess. Thus in Dante's estimation the soul's detachment from sensual appetites become the vices most difficult to tame, urges not as easily curbed by mere good manners since inflamed via appropriate use rather than inappropriate misuse. Hence conventional respect for the ninth and tenth commandments against coveting and social customs that encourage custody of the eyes and ears become prudent adjuncts to training against vice. The first three terraces of purgatory expiate the sins which can be considered to arise from love perverted, that is, sins which arise from the heart of the sinner being set upon something which is wrong in the eyes of God. Those being purged here must have their love set upon the right path. The fourth terrace of purgatory expiates the sins which can be considered to arise from love defective, that is, love which, although directed towards the correct subjects is too weak to drive the sinner to act as they should. Those being purged here must have their love strengthened so as to drive them correctly. The fifth, sixth and seventh terraces of purgatory expiate the sins which can be considered to arise from love excessive, that is, love which although directed towards ends which God considers good is directed towards them too much for the sinner to gain bliss from them, and also so that the sinner is distracted from the love of other things of which god approves. Their love must be cooled to a more sensible level.

Emotions as vices [link]

Marc Jackson in his book ''Emotion and Psyche'' puts forward a new development of what the vices are. He identifies the vices as what he calls the evil emotions "The fourth group consisting of hate, greed, vanity, envy and cruelty is evil" These vices differ from more traditional accounts of vice because they are not character traits expressed by action but emotions that are felt. These emotional vices are to be overcome not through suppression but through feeling and cultivating the opposite virtues, as Jackson writes here: "This will diminish the amount of evil by building up the amount of good such that good will become more active and the evil will not have room to be so active, and thus will diminish"

Vice Ganda (born March 31, 1976) is a Filipino stand-up comedian and television host. He is best known as the main judge on ABS-CBN’s talent show ''It's Showtime'' and the host of ''Gandang Gabi, Vice!''. He is declared as 43rd Box Office Entertainment Awards, Phenomenal Box Office Star & Male Concert Performer of the Year, in the year 2012.

He is also known for his lead roles in commercially successful films ''Petrang Kabayo'' and ''The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin'' which became the highest-grossing film in Philippines.

He gained popularity for his comic routines, for which he uses observational comedy on typical “Pinoy” lifestyle and his use of situational irony and sarcasm when reacting to Filipino culture & behavior and human sexuality. He is the first openly gay endorser for a major product in the Philippines, which is Globe Telecom in the Philippines.

Early life[link]

Vice, Jose Marie Viceral, is the youngest of five children. He grew up in the neighborhood of José Abád Santos Street in Manuguit, Tondo, Manila. His father, a barangay captain, was murdered when he was young prompting his mother to work as a caregiver abroad leaving them by themselves. He obtained his college education at Far Eastern University studying Political Science. Around the age of 19, Vice was writing and performing his stand-up comic routines in comedy bars in Ermita, Manila.

Stand-up comedy[link]

Vice launched his stand-up career in Punchline and The Library, whose manager Andrew de Real gave him the screen name “Vice Ganda”. There he spent several years developing his materials in the comedy clubs. Vice’s career began to build after appearances on television and reviews from tabloid columns. He worked alongside fellow comedians Chocoleit, Pooh, John Lapus and Rey Kilay.

Television career[link]

He appeared in several TV series and sitcoms 'Dyosa'' under the direction of Wenn V. Deramas. Vice also had another supporting role in the drama series ''Maging Sino Ka Man: Ang Pagbabalik''.

His biggest break came in 2009, when he became part of ''Showtime'', a talent search program which made him a regular host/judge until present. His life story of being bullied as a young closeted gay has also been featured in the drama anthology, ''Maalaala Mo Kaya''. Aside from ''Showtime'', he is currently hosting his own Sunday talk show, the consistently top rated ''Gandang Gabi, Vice!''. Currently he is under the management of ABS-CBN, handling him is business unit head Deo Endrinal after being managed for four years by local entertainment columnist/host Ogie Diaz.

Film career[link]

Vice starred in minor roles until in 2009 where he appeared alongside Vilma Santos and John Lloyd Cruz in the film ''In My Life'', depicting a story of a young Filipino gay couple struggling life in New York when one of their parents tries to live with them. A year later he starred in a comedy film, a remake of ''Petrang Kabayo''. It proved to be a hit when it was released. The following year, Vice starred in ''Praybeyt Benjamin'' with Derek Ramsay directed by Wenn V. Deramas. The movie became the first local film to reach 300-million Pesos in ticket sales and proved to be an even greater box office success than Petrang Kabayo. He is presently under contract with Viva Films.

On June 15, 2011, Vice released his first studio album, ''Lakas Tama''. The album was released under Vicor Records and featured mostly pop and novelty songs including "Palong Palo" written by Callalily frontman Kean Cipriano. He is also included in the compilation album of Showtime released by Star Records.

Dr. Kendrick Kang-Joh “Ken” Jeong, MD (born July 13, 1969) also known as Dr. Ken, is an American comedian, actor, and physician. He is best known for his role as Leslie Chow in ''The Hangover'' & ''The Hangover Part II'' and as Ben Chang on the NBC comedy series ''Community''.

Jeong was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of South Korean immigrants Young and D.K. Jeong, who was a professor at North Carolina A&T; State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. Jeong was raised in Greensboro and attended Walter Hines Page High School, where he took part in the High IQ team, played violin in the orchestra, and was elected to student council. He graduated at 16 and his achievements earned him Greensboro's Youth of the Year award.

He completed his undergraduate studies at Duke University in 1990 and attained his medical degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1995. He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans while developing his stand-up comedy.

He won the Big Easy Laff-Off, of which NBC president Brandon Tartikoff and The Improv founder Budd Friedman were judges. They both urged Jeong to move to Los Angeles, and he began performing regularly at the Improv and Laugh Factory comedy clubs.

Jeong's background in theater and improv has led to several television appearances, including NBC's ''The Office'', HBO's ''Entourage'' and ''Curb Your Enthusiasm''. Ken made his feature film debut as Dr. Kuni in Judd Apatow's ''Knocked Up'' which proved to be his breakout performance. Subsequently, he has appeared in ''Pineapple Express''; ''Role Models'' as King Argotron; ''All About Steve''; ''The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard''; ''Couples Retreat''; and as Mr. Chow in ''The Hangover'' and ''The Hangover Part II''. He co-starred in ''Zookeeper'' and ''Transformers: Dark of the Moon'', released in summer 2011.

He attacked (kayfabe) pro wrestler John Cena with a cane on the August 3, 2009 episode of ''WWE Raw''.

Jeong is a series regular as Señor Chang on NBC's sitcom ''Community''.

Jeong was nominated for two 2010 ''MTV Movie Awards'', winning the award for ''Best WTF Moment'' as well as being nominated for ''MTV Movie Award for Best Villain'' for ''The Hangover''.

Jeong was also nominated for "Breakout Star Male" for ''Community'' at the ''2010 Teen Choice Awards''.

In the fall of 2010, Adidas basketball began a wide-ranging marketing campaign in which Jeong stars as the character "Slim Chin" alongside NBA stars Dwight Howard and Derrick Rose.

On May 22, 2011, Jeong hosted the ''2011 Billboard Music Awards'' in Las Vegas on ABC.

On June 15, 2011, Jeong was featured in a Hands Only CPR PSA campaign from the American Heart Association.

Ken Jeong will star in and produce the film The Chung Factor, which was purchased by Lionsgate on October 25, 2011.

Crispin Hellion Glover (born April 20, 1963) is an American film actor, director and screenwriter, recording artist, publisher, and author. Glover is known for portraying eccentric people on screen such as George McFly in ''Back to the Future'', Layne in ''River's Edge'', unfriendly recluse Rubin Farr in ''Rubin and Ed'', Andy Warhol in ''The Doors'', the "Thin Man" in the big screen adaptation of ''Charlie's Angels'' and its sequel, Willard Stiles in the ''Willard'' remake, The Knave of Hearts in ''Alice in Wonderland'', and as Phil in ''Hot Tub Time Machine'', and as a Willy Wonka parody in ''Epic Movie''. He is also the voice of Fifi in the ''Open Season'' franchise and most recently has appeared in the screen adaption of the Elmore Leonard novel "Freaky Deaky".

In the late 1980s, Glover started his company, Volcanic Eruptions, which publishes his books and also serves as the production company for Glover's films, ''What Is It?'' and ''It is Fine. Everything is Fine!'' Glover tours with his movies and plans to create more films at the property he owns in the Czech Republic.

Glover was raised as an only child born in New York City, and moved to Los Angeles with his family at the age of five. His father is actor Bruce Glover and his mother, Mary Elizabeth Lillian Betty Krachey (née) Bloom Koerber, was an actress and dancer who retired upon his birth. He is of English, Czech, German and Swedish descent. He was named after the Saint Crispin's Day speech from William Shakespeare's play ''Henry V'', which his parents enjoyed. "Hellion", his real middle name, had earlier been used as a false middle name by his father, who did not like his own real middle name, Herbert. As a child, Glover attended The Mirman School from grade one through nine. He then attended both Venice High for grade ten and eleven and Beverly Hills High School only for grade twelve and graduated in 1982.

Acting career[link]

Glover began acting professionally at the age of 13. He appeared in several sitcoms as a teenager, including ''Happy Days'' and ''Family Ties''. His first film role was in 1983's ''My Tutor''. That led to roles in ''Teachers'' (1984) and ''Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter'' (1984). He then worked with director Trent Harris on the third chapter of the Beaver Trilogy, entitled ''The Orkly Kid''. In this short film, he portrayed a small town man who organizes a local talent show to showcase his obsession with Olivia Newton-John, much to the embarrassment of the local community. At the climax of the film, Glover does his rendition, in full drag, of Newton-John's "Please Don't Keep Me Waiting" from her 1979 album ''Totally Hot''.

Because these methods suggested that Glover himself had performed for the film, he sued the producers on the grounds that they did not own his likeness. He has continued to play exceedingly eccentric types, e.g., playing Andy Warhol in Oliver Stone's ''The Doors'' in 1991, as well as the title characters in ''Bartleby'' (2001) and ''Willard'' (2003). He received mainstream attention as the "Thin Man" in the ''Charlie's Angels'' films; the character had initially been cast as a speaking role, but Glover, noting that the lines as written were exposition, convinced the producers to eliminate the lines to create a darker image for the character.

Glover was a co-interlocutor with Norm Hill and Werner Herzog for the special feature commentary for the DVD of Werner Herzog's ''Even Dwarfs Started Small'' and ''Fata Morgana''.

Glover appeared in the 2007 film ''Beowulf'' as the monster Grendel, playing the part via performance capture technology. The film was Glover's first collaboration with director Robert Zemeckis since the original ''Back to the Future'' film.

''Late Night'' appearance[link]

Glover appeared on ''Late Night with David Letterman'' on July 28, 1987, to promote the movie ''River's Edge'', in which he starred. Unbeknownst to Letterman and the audience, Glover appeared in character as "Rubin", from a then-unreleased movie ''Rubin and Ed'', wearing platform shoes and a wig. Rather than a conventional interview, Glover staged an Andy Kaufman-like prank. After being goaded by a woman in the audience (who some argue had been planted), Glover stated that he "knew that this was gonna happen" and that "the press, they can do things, they can twist things around". After challenging Letterman to an arm-wrestling match, Glover delivered an impromptu karate kick a few feet from Letterman while stating, "I'm strong... I can kick!" Letterman then abruptly ended the segment by walking off stage, saying "I'm going to check on the Top 10", as the program cut to commercial.

The subsequent confusion and controversy surrounding his appearance was compounded by the fact that ''Rubin and Ed'' was not actually released until 1991; however, the movie had been in development since before ''Back to the Future'' — Crispin had actually already devised Rubin's "look" by 1985. Almost no-one, apparently including Letterman, understood what Glover was doing and the interview became the hallmark of the "weird" TV guest.

Glover returned to the Letterman show twice after that, the first about a month later, and then again almost 3 years after where he participated in a more nearly standard interview, but made it questionable whether he was ever on the show before and used a variety of delay tactics explaining the incident; he did say something about it being "an interesting thing." Glover then appeared two years later promoting a record album. When again asked about his first appearance, Glover launched into a long story, mentioning meeting a fellow resembling himself named Rubin, and needing to appear on ''The Tonight Show'' with Johnny Carson simultaneous to his appearance with Letterman. Here Letterman cut him off to talk about the album Glover was promoting, as the time allotted for the interview was more than halfway over. Glover has subsequently refused to go into detail about the reasons for his behavior on the show, other than to mention that he's flattered that fans are still speculating on the performance more than 20 years later. Glover has also mentioned that he prefers there to be an "air of mystery" about the appearance.

thumb|Crispin Glover in September 2008.In 1989, during a hiatus from films, Glover released an album called ''The Big Problem Does Not Equal the Solution, The Solution Equals Let It Be'' through Restless Records, produced by Barnes & Barnes (of "Fish Heads" fame). The album features original songs like "Clowny Clown Clown", odd versions of Lee Hazlewood's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" and Charles Manson's "I'll Never Say Never to Always" (sung in falsetto), and readings from his art books ''Rat Catching'' and ''Oak Mot'' (see ''Books'' section below). Sample pages from these books are featured in the album's liner notes. The back cover of the album is a collage of figures relating to each track on the album, with an inscription: "All words and lyrics point to THE BIG PROBLEM. The solution lay within the title; LET IT BE. Crispin Hellion Glover wants to know what you think these nine things all have in common." He included a telephone number on the back of the album, encouraging listeners to phone when they had figured out the element that all pieces had in common. He has said the telephone number was a pre-internet way of letting people know about the books. As for the "Nine things in common" Glover has said "It is really just the theme of the album." Glover later commented that he was surprised how many people realized what it was.

He recorded a version of the Michael Jackson song "Ben" to coincide with the release of the 2003 film ''Willard''; the song had been written for the sequel to the original 1971 version of this film. In the music video for the song, he sings to a rat named Ben.

A number of songs using Glover's name as the title have been recorded by various artists, including shoegaze/gothic rock band Scarling., Chicago outsider musician Wesley Willis and a New Jersey-based band called Children In Adult Jails. In the early 2000s, a Kansas City band named itself Onward Crispin Glover after receiving the blessing of Glover.

Glover has written between 15 and 20 books. ''Oak-Mot'' and ''Rat Catching'' are featured prominently during his ''Big Slide Show'' presentation, and are presented as visual art as much as written art. He constructs the books by reusing old novels and other publications which have fallen into public domain due to their age (for example, ''Rat Catching'' was constructed from an 1896 book ''Studies in the Art of Rat Catching'', and ''Oak-Mot'' was constructed from an 1868 novel of the same title). He rearranges text, blacks out certain standing passages, and adds his own prose (and sometimes images) into the margins and elsewhere, thus creating an entirely new story. Four of his books have been published so far, through his publishing company, Volcanic Eruptions. Other known titles include ''The Backward Swing'', ''A New World'' and ''Round My House''.

Directorial work[link]

Glover made his directorial debut with 2005's ''What Is It?'', a surreal film featuring a cast of actors with Down syndrome. It premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. The movie, with a budget of only $150,000, took almost a decade to complete and was originally intended to be a short film. Most of the primary footage was shot in 12 days, stretched over a two-and-a-half year period. Production was mostly funded by the actor's roles in ''Willard'' and the ''Charlie's Angels'' films. Glover's second film, ''It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine.'' was written by Utah writer-actor Steven C. Stewart. Stewart was born with a severe case of cerebral palsy and had been confined to a nursing home for about ten years. The second film is a fantastical psycho-sexual re-telling of life from Stewart's point of view. It premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Glover is planning a third film called ''It Is Mine'' which will end the ''It?'' Trilogy.
