Francis Anthony Aylmer Maude (born 4 July 1953) is a British politician, member of the Conservative Party and current Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General as well as a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the constituency of Horsham. He is the son of the former Conservative Cabinet minister Angus Maude.

Early life

Francis was educated at Abingdon School, an independent school for boys situated in Abingdon in Oxfordshire, followed by Corpus Christi College at the University of Cambridge, and the College of Law, and practised criminal law. He was a councillor for the City of Westminster from 1978 to 1984.

Political career

In government

Maude was first elected to the House of Commons in the Conservative Party's landslide victory in the 1983 general election in the constituency of North Warwickshire. In 1984, he became the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister for Employment Peter Morrison. Maude then became an assistant government whip (1985–87) and Minister for Corporate and Consumer Affairs (1987–89). In 1989, he became the Minister for Europe in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

In Alan Clark's "Diaries" Maude was quoted as saying that then Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson "couldn't be Foreign Secretary as a Jew".

Maude was one of the first "men in grey suits" to meet with Margaret Thatcher in November 1990 after she failed to win the first round of a leadership election. He told her that he would support her as long as she went on, but he did not believe she could win the leadership contest.

After John Major became Prime Minister, Maude was made the Financial Secretary to the Treasury. However, in the 1992 general election he lost his seat to the Labour Party candidate, Mike O'Brien, and was thus forced to vacate his ministerial roles. That same year, he was sworn of the Privy Council.

In a 2006 interview, Maude admitted that the introduction of Section 28 legislation whilst he was in government (which banned councils from promoting homosexuality and led to the closure of gay support groups) was "a mistake", saying it could have contributed to the death from HIV of his homosexual brother, Charles, and many others.

Out of Parliament

Out of Parliament after the 1992 general election, Maude began a series of business roles. He worked in banking as Managing Director at Morgan Stanley from 1993 to 1997. He was also appointed a non-executive director of ASDA Group Plc in July 1992, and served as a director of Salomon Brothers from 1992 to 1993. He also chaired the government's Deregulation Task Force from 1994 to 1997.

Shadow cabinet

In the 1997 general election Maude was elected MP for Horsham. Almost immediately he was re-appointed to the Conservative front bench, now the Opposition in Parliament. He served as Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Shadow Foreign Secretary until 2001.

Maude managed Michael Portillo's unsuccessful bid for the Conservative leadership in 2001, after which he declined a front bench role under the new leader Iain Duncan Smith. He was considered to be a 'moderniser' and on the left of the party, writing in ''The Daily Telegraph'' (24 June 2002), he stated that the Conservative Party's electoral problems had been caused by their failure to "look and sound like modern Britain". Norman Tebbit's secretary, Beryl Goldsmith, criticised Maude after this, asking: "How many male, white, straight Conservative MPs currently passionately campaigning for the selection of more women, and more men and women from ethnic minorities, would voluntarily relinquish their own seats in order to encourage local associations to follow the policy line they preach from their own smug, safe base? Precious few I would guess — including Mr Francis Maude."

After the 2005 general election, Maude returned to the Shadow Cabinet as Chairman of the Conservative Party. He used his speech at the Tory Party conference that year to argue for a clean-up of the Conservative Party brand, showing a slide demonstrating that party policy on immigration was more popular with voters before they were told it was Conservative Party policy, an act which aided David Cameron's leadership bid. During his tenure, alongside newly elected leader David Cameron, the Conservatives adopted the A-List of parliamentary candidates, with priority being given to women and ethnic minorities. However, he was accused of hypocrisy by promoting a "family-friendly" image while being the non-executive chairman of Jubilee Investment Trust plc, which held 21% of American pornographic actress Jill Kelly's adult DVD business, and chairman of the Mission Marketing Group, which has advertised for WKD drinks and Playboy. Maude, "who has railed against irresponsible lending by banks and mortgage companies", was accused of hypocrisy for receiving more than £100,000 as a director of a company that has profited from sub-prime mortgages. His annual salary was £25,000 from 2002 to 2005, for attending around six meetings a year of the company , and £12000 a year 2006 to 2008. The company went into liquidation in April 2009.

In July 2007, Maude was made Shadow Cabinet Office Minister and Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, with responsibility for preparing the Conservatives for Government, with some dubbing him as the Party's "enforcer". At the Conservative Party Conference in October 2007 he said: "David (Cameron) has asked me to lead an implementation team that will ensure that we are as well-prepared as any incoming government has ever been. Our priorities rigorously sorted. Our teams armed with the knowledge and capabilities that will enable new ministers to start making a difference from day one."

Maude supported Republican John McCain in the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. He led the Conservative Party delegation to the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Expenses claims

Maude allegedly purchased a flat in London, close to a house he already owned, before claiming on the flat and renting out the house.

Personal life

Maude is father of five: Julia, Cecily, Harry, Alastair and Lydia. His personal net wealth is estimated at £3m. Despite this, during a discussion on ''Newsnight'' on 22 October 2010 he argued that a 5% cut to his £65,738 salary was equal to the 'pain' suffered by Britain's poor. Although a proponent of David Cameron's "Big Society", a July 2010 interview revealed Maude does little or no work for the voluntary sector, believing that his work as an MP was contribution enough.

Mark Serwotka (; born 26 April 1963 in Cardiff), is General Secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), the trade union for British civil servants.

Early life

Born into a Catholic orphanage in Cardiff, Wales, he was adopted by a Polish British father and a Welsh mother.

Career

Aged sixteen, he joined the Civil Service, and started work as a benefits clerk, joining the union on the first day.

Election as General Secretary

Serwotka became a union representative in 1980, and became a personal case officer in 1995.

In the 2000 election that saw Serwotka elected General Secretary, he initially faced two rival candidates: Hugh Lanning of the Membership First faction and the incumbent Barry Reamsbottom of the National Moderate Group. However, Reamsbottom did not secure the fifty branch nominations needed to appear on the ballot paper. Serwotka then beat Lanning with 41,000 to 33,000 votes. Following Serwotka's election, Reamsbottom refused to step down when his term of office expired, citing what he claimed were legal irregularities in the election process. The dispute was taken to the High Court where Serwotka won and subsequently assumed office. In December 2009, Serwotka was re-elected for a five-year term, gaining 37,866 votes against Rob Bryson's 21,883.

In the 2000 election campaign, Serwotka pledged that he would only accept an average member's wage. However, in 2009 he received £86,244 in salary as well as £25,441 in pensions contributions and a £1,076 additional housing cost allowance.

Political views

Serwotka was a member of ''Socialist Organiser'' in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was later a supporter of the Socialist Alliance and then Respect.

Personal life

Married, Serwotka is an avid Cardiff City fan and lives in Chipstead, Surrey.

Ahead of a visit by Pope Benedict XVI in September 2010, Serwotka was named as one of the hundred most influential Catholics in Britain by The Tablet.

Ten Years After is an English blues-rock band, most popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Between 1968 and 1973, Ten Years After scored eight Top 40 albums on the UK Albums Chart. and are best known for their tracks "I'm Going Home", "Hear Me Calling", "I'd Love To Change the World" and "Love Like a Man".

History

After several years of local success in the Nottingham/Mansfield area as a band known since 1962 as The Jaybirds (its core was formed in late 1960 as Ivan Jay and the Jaycats), and later as Ivan Jay and the Jaymen, Ten Years After was founded by Alvin Lee and Leo Lyons. Ivan Jay sang lead vocals from late 1960 to 1962 and was joined by Ric Lee in August 1965, replacing drummer Dave Quickmire, who had replaced Pete Evans in 1962. In 1966 The Jaybirds moved to London, where Chick Churchill joined the group. That November the quartet signed a manager, Chris Wright, and decided to change its name to Blues Trip, Blues Yard (under which they played a show at the Marquee Club supporting the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band), and finally in November 1966, to Ten Years After, (in honor of Elvis Presley, an idol of Lee's whose momentous year in rock - 1956, helps to better explain the band's name). The group became the first act booked by the soon-to-be Chrysalis Agency. It secured a residency at the Marquee, and received an invitation to play at the Windsor Jazz Festival in 1967. That performance led to a contract with Deram, a subsidiary of Decca – the first band so signed without a hit single. In October, its 1967 self-titled debut album was released.

In 1968 after touring Scandinavia and the United States, Ten Years After released its second album, the live ''Undead'', which brought the noteworthy song "I'm Going Home". This was followed in February 1969 by the studio issue ''Stonedhenge'', a British hit, that included another well-known track, "Hear Me Calling" (it was released also as a single, and covered in 1972 by the British glam rock rising stars, Slade). In July 1969 the group appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival, in the first event to which rock bands were invited. In August, the band performed a breakthrough American appearance at Woodstock; their rendition of "I'm Going Home" featuring Alvin Lee as lead singer, was featured in both the subsequent film and soundtrack album and catapulted them to star status.

During 1970, Ten Years After released "Love Like a Man", the group's only hit in the UK Singles Chart. This song was on the band's fifth album, ''Cricklewood Green''. The name of the album comes from a friend of the group who lived in Cricklewood, London. He grew a sort of plant which was said to have hallucinogenic effects. The band did not know the name of this plant, so the members called their album ''Cricklewood Green''. It was the first record to be issued with a different playing speed on each side – one a three-minute edit at 45rpm, the other, a nearly eight-minute live version at 33rpm. In August 1970, Ten Years After played the Strawberry Fields Festival near Toronto, and the Isle of Wight Festival 1970.

In 1971 the band switched labels to Columbia Records and released the hit album ''A Space in Time,'' which marked a move toward more commercial material. It featured the group's biggest hit, "I'd Love to Change the World". In late 1972 the group issued their second Columbia album ''Rock & Roll Music to the World'' and in 1973 the live double album ''Ten Years After Recorded Live''. The band subsequently broke up after their final 1974 Columbia album ''Positive Vibrations''. The members reunited in 1983 to play the Reading Festival, and this performance was later released on CD as ''The Friday Rock Show Sessions - Live At Reading '83' ''. In 1988 the members reunited for a few concerts and recorded the album ''About Time'' (1989). In 1994, they participated in the Eurowoodstock festival in Budapest.

Alvin Lee has since then mostly played and recorded under his own name. In 2003, the other band members replaced him with Joe Gooch, and recorded the album, ''Now''. Material from the following tour was used for the 2005 double album, ''Roadworks''. Ric Lee is currently in a band called The Breakers, along with Ian Ellis (ex-Clouds).
