Lorne Michaels, CM (born November 17, 1944) is a Canadian-American^[1] television producer, writer, and comedian best known for creating and producing Saturday Night Live and producing the various film and TV projects that spun off from it.

Early life[link]

Michaels was born Lorne David Lipowitz in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the son of Florence (née Becker) and Henry Abraham Lipowitz, a furrier.^[1] He was the eldest of the Lipowitz children. He has a sister, Barbara Lipowitz, who currently resides in Toronto, and a brother, Mark Lipowitz, who died from a brain tumor. Michaels attended the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute in Toronto and graduated from University College, University of Toronto, where he majored in English, in 1966.^[2] Michaels began his career as a writer and broadcaster for CBC Radio.^[3] He moved to Los Angeles from Toronto in 1968 to work as a writer for Laugh-In and The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show. He starred with Hart Pomerantz in The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour, a Canadian comedy series which ran briefly in the early 1970s. During the late 1960s, Michaels married Rosie Shuster, who later worked with him on Saturday Night Live as a writer.^[4] She was the daughter of Frank Shuster, one half of the famous comedy team, Wayne and Shuster. Michaels and Shuster were divorced in 1980.

In 1975, Michaels created (with fellow NBC employee Dick Ebersol and president of the network Herb Schlosser) the TV show NBC's Saturday Night, which in 1977 changed its name to Saturday Night Live. The show, which is performed live in front of a studio audience, immediately established a reputation for being cutting edge and unpredictable. It became a vehicle for launching the careers of some of the most successful comedians in the United States.

Originally the producer of the show, Michaels was also a writer and later became executive producer. He occasionally appears on-screen as well, where he is known for his deadpan humor. Throughout the show's history, SNL has been nominated for more than 80 Emmy Awards and has won 18. It has consistently been one of the highest-rated late-night television programs. Michaels has been with SNL for all seasons except for his hiatus in the early 1980s (seasons 6–10).

His daughter Sophie has appeared in episodes, one of which was during the show's 30th season hosted by Johnny Knoxville during the monologue when Lorne introduces Johnny Knoxville to his daughter and Sophie shocks Knoxville with a taser. She also appeared in a sketch about underage drinking when Zac Efron hosted the show.

Perhaps Michaels' best-known appearance occurred in the first season when he offered the Beatles $3,000 - a deliberately paltry sum - to reunite on the show.^[5] He later upped his offer to $3,200, but the money was never claimed. According to an interview in Playboy magazine, John Lennon and Paul McCartney happened to be in New York City that night and saw the show. They very nearly went, but changed their minds as it was getting too late to get to the show on time, and they were both tired. This near-reunion was the basis for the TV movie Two of Us.

He has had combative relationships with several cast members, and is generally portrayed by media onlookers as a harsh but effective boss. One source of conflict is his rather active disdain of improvisation during the performances of SNL, despite the extensive background and training in improvisational comedy many of SNL's performers have had.

Michaels started Broadway Video in 1979, producing such shows as The Kids in the Hall.

During his SNL hiatus, Michaels created another sketch show entitled The New Show, which debuted on Friday nights in prime time on NBC in January 1984. The show failed to garner the same enthusiasm as SNL.

In the 1980s, Michaels appeared in an HBO mockumentary titled The Canadian Conspiracy about the supposed subversion of the United States by Canadian-born media personalities, with Lorne Greene as the leader of the conspiracy. Michaels was identified as the anointed successor to Greene.

Michaels is also the Executive Producer of NBC shows Late Night, 30 Rock, and Up All Night.

Honors[link]

In 1999, Michaels was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. In 2002, Michaels was made a member of the Order of Canada for lifetime achievement,^[6] and awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In 2003, he received a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.^[7]

In 2004, he was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.^[8] Speaking at the awards ceremony, original Saturday Night Live cast member Dan Aykroyd described Michaels as "the primary satirical voice of the country."

In Canada, Michaels also received a 2006 Governor General's Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.^[3]

In 2008, Michaels was awarded the Webby for Film & Video Lifetime Achievement. With the allotted 5-words allowed to each recipient, his five word acceptance speech was "Five words is not enough."

Mark McKinney of the comedy team The Kids in the Hall has stated that his character, Don Roritor, the president of Roritor Pharmaceuticals in the film Brain Candy, is based on Lorne Michaels.

Michaels was played by Ari Cohen in the 2002 TV movie Gilda Radner: It's Always Something.

Michaels has been mentioned on three episodes of The Simpsons (every time as the butt of jokes).

In a 2008 interview with Playboy, as well in various other interviews, Tina Fey admitted that Alec Baldwin's character Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock is inspired by Michaels. In a different interview on NPR's "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" radio show, Baldwin stated some of his inspiration for Donaghy was drawn from Michaels.^[9]

Michaels became a U.S. citizen in 1987.^[1] He has three children: Henry, who attends Dartmouth College as a member of the Class of 2014; Edward, who attends Deerfield Academy class of 2013; and a daughter, Sophie, who attends the Chapin School in the Class of 2016. He has been married three times, first to SNL writer Rosie Shuster (1967; div. 1980), then to model Susan Forristal (1984; div. 1987), and currently to his former assistant Alice Barry (1991 to present). Lorne has given money to the campaigns of Senators Barack Obama, Chris Dodd, Sonny Landham, and John McCain over the years.^[10][11]

Nora Eloise Dunn (born April 29, 1952) is an American actress and comedian, perhaps best known for her work on NBC's Saturday Night Live.

Early life[link]

Dunn was born in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Margaret, a nurse, and John Dunn, a musician and poet.^[1] Her brother is actor Kevin Dunn. She attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1970 to 1972, San Francisco City College, and the Academy of Fine Arts.^[2]

Dunn joined SNL in 1985 with the return of Lorne Michaels as executive producer. The 1985–1986 season proved to be a ratings disaster, and she was one of only five cast members who were not fired at its end (the others were newcomers Jon Lovitz, A. Whitney Brown, Dennis Miller and longtime featured player Al Franken). As part of the 1986–1987 cast including newcomers Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Victoria Jackson, and Kevin Nealon, Dunn would be part of what was considered the show's second golden age.

Although she never became one of its breakout stars, Dunn was a dependable supporting player. Her characters included half of "The Sweeney Sisters" lounge act alongside Hooks, as well as talk show host Pat Stevens (which became a popular recurring role starting in the low-rated 1985–1986 season), melodramatic French hooker Babette, and film buff Ashley Ashley from the "Actors on Film" sketch from the 1985–1986 season. Her many impressions included Ann Landers, Imelda Marcos, Liza Minnelli, Tyne Daly, Joan Baez, Martina Navratilova, and Cokie Roberts.

Dunn made headlines in 1990 when she, along with original musical guest Sinéad O'Connor, boycotted an episode which was hosted by comedian Andrew Dice Clay because they found his misogynistic humor offensive. Since then, in addition to numerous feature film roles, she has gone back to television with recurring roles on Sisters from 1993–1996 and The Nanny from 1998–1999, as well as a guest-starring role in a two-part episode of The X-Files in 1998.

Her participation in films include Miami Blues with Alec Baldwin, Three Kings with George Clooney, Runaway Jury with John Cusack and Zoolander with Ben Stiller, and most recently the hit independent film Love for Rent (2005), Pineapple Express (2008). As well as My Suicide (2009) with Gabriel Sunday.

Warren Beatty ( /ˈbeɪti/ BAY-tee;^[1] born March 30, 1937) is an American actor, producer, screenwriter and director. He has been nominated for 15 Academy Awards, including winning the Best Director Award and its highest honor, the Irving G. Thalberg Award. He has been nominated for 16 Golden Globe Awards, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which he received in 2007.

Early life and education[link]

Beatty was born Henry Warren Beaty in Richmond, Virginia's Bellevue neighborhood. His mother, Kathlyn Corinne (née MacLean), was a Nova Scotia-born drama teacher, and his father, Ira Owens Beaty, was a professor of psychology, a public school administrator, and a real estate agent.^[2] Beatty's grandparents were also teachers. The family was Baptist.^[3][4] In Virginia, his father moved the family from Richmond to Norfolk, and then to Arlington, where he became a middle school principal. The family also lived in Waverly, Virginia, in the 1930s. Beatty's sister, three years his senior, is the multi-award winning actress and writer Shirley MacLaine. Their uncle (his mother's brother-in-law) was A.A. MacLeod, a Communist member of the Ontario legislature in the 1940s.

Beatty was a star football player at Washington-Lee High School, in Arlington. Encouraged to act by the success of his sister, who had recently established herself as a Hollywood star, he decided to work as a stagehand at the National Theater in Washington, D.C., during the summer prior to his senior year. Upon graduation from high school, he turned down 10 football scholarships to go to Northwestern University.

He studied liberal arts at Northwestern University. While at Northwestern, he appeared in the annual Waa-Mu Show. He is a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He left after his freshman year to move to New York City. He garnered a best actor Tony Award nomination in 1960 for his performance in William Inge's drama A Loss of Roses. It was to be his only appearance on the Broadway stage.

Under his original name of Henry W. Beaty, Warren Beatty enlisted in the California Air National Guard on February 11, 1960.

On January 1, 1961, Beatty was discharged from the Air National Guard due to physical disability. He was also simultaneously discharged from the United States Air Force Reserve. He served on inactive duty only.

Beatty started his career making appearances in television series such as Studio One (1957), Playhouse 90 (1959), and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959). He made his film debut under Elia Kazan's direction and opposite Natalie Wood in Splendor in the Grass (1961). The film was a box office success and Beatty was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Motion Picture Actor – Drama. He followed his initial film performance in Splendor in the Grass with Tennessee Williams' The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (1960) directed by Jose Quintero, All Fall Down (1961) directed by John Frankenheimer, Lilith (1963) directed by Robert Rossen, Promise Her Anything (1964) directed by Arthur Hiller, Mickey One (1964) directed by Arthur Penn, and Kaleidoscope (1965) directed by Jack Smight.

In 1966 Beatty produced and acted in Bonnie and Clyde at age 29. This hit was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Beatty.

Beatty had produced and starred in Bonnie and Clyde as a means of controlling the projects he was involved with. He hired the untested writers Robert Benton and David Newman, as well as director Arthur Penn, and controlled every facet of production, including cast, script and final cut of the film.

Bonnie and Clyde became a blockbuster and cultural touchstone for the youth culture of the era. The film, along with Easy Rider, marked the beginning of the so-called “New Hollywood” era^{[citation needed]}, where studios gave unprecedented freedom to filmmakers to pursue their own idiosyncratic vision.

After making Bonnie and Clyde, Beatty acted in The Only Game In Town (1969) directed by George Stevens, McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1970) directed by Robert Altman, Dollars (1971) directed by Richard Brooks, The Parallax View (1973) directed by Alan Pakula, and The Fortune (1974) directed by Mike Nichols. He produced, co-wrote and acted in Shampoo (1974) directed by Hal Ashby. Beatty and Towne were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film. In 1978, Beatty directed, produced, wrote and starred in Heaven Can Wait (1978). The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.

The box office success of Shampoo and Heaven Can Wait allowed Beatty to handpick his next project. He used this power to make Reds (1981), an historical epic about the Communist journalist John Reed who observed the Russian October Revolution – a project Beatty had begun researching and filming for as far back as 1970. "Reds" proved to be an enormous critical and commercial success (made all the more noticeable considering it was an American film about an American Communist made and released at the height of the Cold War), grossing $40 million, and securing 12 Academy Award nominations, including yet again 4 nominations for Beatty himself for Best Actor, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (with Trevor Griffiths); Though the film failed to win Best Picture (it lost to Chariots of Fire), it nevertheless won 3 awards, for Best Cinematography, Best Supporting Actress (Maureen Stapleton) and Best Director for Beatty.

Beatty is only one of two people (the other being Orson Welles) to have been nominated by the Academy on 4 different categories for a single film (producer, director, actor, writer), and is the only one to have achieved this feat twice.

After a six-year hiatus following Reds, Beatty starred alongside Dustin Hoffman in 1987's big-budget film Ishtar. It received mixed reviews and was severely criticized by the new studio chief David Puttnam.

1990s and 2000s[link]

In 1990, he bounced back when he produced, directed and starred in the title role as the comic strip character Dick Tracy in the film of the same name. The film was one of the highest grossers of the year and also the highest-grossing film in Beatty's career to date.

In 1991, he starred as the real-life gangster Bugsy Siegel in the biopic Bugsy which was critically acclaimed and made almost fifty million dollars at the U.S. box-office. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, and Beatty once again was nominated for Best Actor as well as Best Picture (along with producers Mark Johnson and Barry Levinson, who also directed). His next film, Love Affair (1994), failed to do well. In 1998, he wrote, produced, directed and starred in the political satire Bulworth which was critically appreciated and earned him another nomination for Best Original Screenplay. In 2001, he appeared in his last film to date, Town and Country, which received mixed reviews and did not fare well commercially.

In 2006, Beatty was named Honorary Chairman of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, succeeding Marlon Brando. In 2007, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association awarded Beatty the Cecil B. DeMille award, presented at the Golden Globe ceremony by Tom Hanks. Beatty was honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2008.

Beatty is on the Board of Trustees at The Scripps Research Institute.

Beatty is one of two people to receive Oscar nominations in the Best Picture, Actor, Director, and Screenplay categories for a single film. This feat is all the more impressive since Beatty achieved it twice: in 1978 for Heaven Can Wait and again for Reds in 1981, when he won the directing award. His writing credits have never been in dispute. However, in Peter Biskind's biography of Beatty, Star, Biskind alleged that several distinguished writers with whom Beatty has collaborated (e.g., Bo Goldman, Robert Towne, James Toback, Robert Benton, et al.) have claimed that Beatty often requested or demanded writing credit where little or none was due. All these writers have denied Biskind's claim.

Beatty's overall Academy Award nominations number 15: he received Best Picture nominations for Bonnie and Clyde, Bugsy, Reds and Heaven Can Wait, received writing nominations for Shampoo, Reds, Bulworth and Heaven Can Wait, received Best Director nominations for Heaven Can Wait and Reds, and has received Best Actor nominations for Bonnie and Clyde, Heaven Can Wait, Reds and Bugsy.

A longtime activist in various liberal political causes, Beatty has, at various times, been extremely active in the presidential politics of the Democratic Party. In 1968, he hit the campaign trail for the first time, supporting Senator Robert F. Kennedy's bid for his party's presidential nomination. His involvement in the senator's campaign, which included stump speaking and fundraising, was cut short when Kennedy was shot and killed by Sirhan Sirhan on the same night that he won a crucial primary in California.

Four years later, Beatty joined the campaign of Senator George McGovern as an advisor. As part of the so-called "Malibu Mafia," a group of Hollywood celebrities who were part of the candidate's "inner circle," Beatty gave McGovern's campaign manager Gary Hart advice about the handling of public relations and was instrumental in organizing a series of rock concerts which raised over $1 million for the senator's campaign.^[6]

In 1984, and again in 1988, Beatty was to play a similar role in Hart's own presidential campaigns. Hart, who had, by that time, become a senator himself, had become friends with Beatty during the 1972 campaign and the relationship had grown closer during the intervening decade. After Hart's second campaign imploded over allegations that he had committed adultery with a former beauty queen named Donna Rice, a mutual friend of the two explained why they were so close: "Gary always wanted to have Warren's life and Warren always wanted to have Gary's. It was a match made in heaven."

Beatty seriously considered becoming a candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination during the summer of 1999 . After it became clear that the only two contenders for the Democratic Party's nomination were to be Vice President Al Gore and former Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey, Beatty made it generally known that he was dissatisfied with the two choices and began to drop hints that he might be willing to seek the nomination himself. After meeting with several powerful liberal activists and influential Democratic operatives, including pollster Pat Caddell, who had worked previously for Hart, McGovern, California governor Jerry Brown and President Jimmy Carter, and adman Bill Hillsman, who had worked on the campaigns of Senator Paul Wellstone and Governor Jesse Ventura, Beatty announced in September 1999 that he would not seek the nomination. However, he continued to be courted by members of a different political party, the Reform Party, who were looking for an alternative to Pat Buchanan, a conservative who had switched parties after losing the Republican Party's presidential nomination for the third time in a row. Despite frequent entreaties by Governor Ventura, real-estate magnate Donald Trump, and syndicated columnist Arianna Huffington, Beatty refused to enter the race and Buchanan eventually won the Reform Party's nomination.

Despite his decision not to seek the presidency in 2000, Beatty intimated that he might still run at a later time, telling reporters that he would do so if he thought he "could make an impact on the debate". As California governor Gray Davis' popularity with California voters dropped, Beatty campaigned against the 2003 special election. He was the keynote speaker at the California Nurses Association's 2005 convention, and recorded radio ads urging voters to reject Governor Schwarzenegger's ballot proposals. The propositions were defeated at the ballot box, increasing speculation that Beatty might run against Schwarzenegger in the 2006 election. But, in early 2006, Beatty announced he would not seek the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Beatty's anticipated run for president in 2000 was lampooned by Gary Trudeau in his strip Doonesbury.

Dominick George "Don" Pardo (born February 22, 1918) is an American radio and television announcer. He is best known as the voice of the long-running late night sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live.

Pardo is noted for his long association with NBC, working as the announcer for early incarnations of such notable shows as The Price is Right, Jeopardy!, and NBC Nightly News. He has acted as the announcer of Saturday Night Live for all but one of its seasons. He continues his voiceover duties during the program's opening montage, several years after his official retirement from NBC.

Radio career[link]

Pardo was born in Westfield, Massachusetts, and spent his childhood in Norwich, Connecticut, and Providence, Rhode Island. He was hired for his first radio position at WJAR-AM in Providence in 1938. Pardo joined NBC as an in-house announcer in 1944, remaining on the network staff for the next 60 years. During World War II, he worked as a war reporter for NBC radio.^[1][2]

In the early 1950s, he served as announcer for many of RCA's and NBC's closed-circuit color television demonstrations, but eventually became one of the top game-show announcers for the network.

Pardo made his mark on game shows for NBC as the booming voice of the original The Price Is Right from 1956 until it moved to ABC in 1963, then Call My Bluff. The next year, he moved to Jeopardy!, which he announced from 1964 until the original version of the series ended in 1975. Pardo reprised that role with a cameo voiceover in "Weird Al" Yankovic's 1984 song "I Lost on Jeopardy" (a parody of the Greg Kihn Band's 1983 hit song "Jeopardy"). He also announced numerous other New York–based NBC game shows, such as Three on a Match, Winning Streak, and Jackpot!, all three of which were Bob Stewart productions.
