The Penguin Group is a trade book publisher, the second largest in the world, after Random House^[1]. The Penguin Group is the name of the incorporated division of parent Pearson PLC that oversees these publishing operations. Penguin Books has its registered office in City of Westminster, London, England.^[2][3]

Its British division is Penguin Books Ltd. Other separate divisions can be found in the United States, Ireland, New Zealand, India, Australia, Canada, China and South Africa.

Penguin Books Ltd. (est. 1935) of the United Kingdom was bought over by Pearson Longman in 1970.

Penguin Group (USA) Inc. was formed in 1996 as a result of the merger between Penguin Books USA and the Putnam Berkley Group. The newly formed company was originally called Penguin Putnam Inc., but in 2003 changed its name to Penguin Group (USA) Inc. to reflect the parent Pearson PLC's grouping of all the Penguin companies worldwide under the supervisory umbrella of Pearson's own Penguin Group division.

The different Penguin companies use many imprints, many of which used to be independent publishers.^[4] Penguin Group (USA) Inc. also operates its own speaker's bureau that books speaking engagements for many of the publisher's authors.

Ken Follett (born 5 June 1949) is a Welsh author of thrillers and historical novels. He has sold more than 100 million copies of his works. Four of his books have reached the number 1 ranking on the New York Times best-seller list: The Key to Rebecca, Lie Down with Lions, Triple, and World Without End.^[1]

Early life[link]

Follett was born on 5 June 1949 in Cardiff, Wales. He was the first child of Martin Follett, a tax inspector, and Lavinia (Veenie) Follett, who went on to have three more children.^[2][3] Barred from watching movies and television by his Plymouth Brethren parents, he developed an early interest in reading but remained an indifferent student until he entered his teens.^[2][3] His family moved to London when he was ten years old and he began applying himself to his studies at Harrow Weald Grammar School and Poole Technical College, and won admission in 1967 to University College London, where he studied philosophy and became involved in centre-left politics.

Marriage and early success[link]

He married his first wife, Mary, in 1968, and their son Emanuele was born in the same year.^[2] After graduation in the autumn of 1970 Follett took a three-month post-graduate course in journalism and went to work as a trainee reporter in Cardiff on the South Wales Echo.^[2] After three years in Cardiff he returned to London as a general-assignment reporter for the Evening News.^[2] Finding the work unchallenging he eventually left journalism for publishing and became, by the late 1970s, deputy managing director of the small London publisher Everest Books.^[2] He also began writing fiction during evenings and weekends as a hobby. Later he said he began writing books when he needed extra money to fix his car, and the publisher's advance a fellow journalist had been paid for a thriller was the sum required for the repairs.^[4] Success came gradually at first but the publication of Eye of the Needle in 1978 made him both wealthy and internationally famous. Each of Follett's subsequent novels has also become a best-seller, ranking high on the New York Times Best Seller list; a number have been adapted for the screen. He is also featured in Making Music Magazine.

Follett became involved, during the late 1970s, in the activities of Britain's Labour Party. In the course of his political activities he met the former Barbara Broer, a Labour official, who became his second wife in 1984. She was elected as a Member of Parliament in 1997, representing Stevenage. She was re-elected in both 2001 and in 2005, but did not run in the 2010 general election after becoming embroiled in the United Kingdom Parliamentary expenses scandal, where she was among the MPs found to have overclaimed the highest amount of expenses.^[5] Follett himself remains a prominent Labour supporter and fundraiser as well as a prominent Blairite. In 2010 he was the largest donor to Ed Balls' campaign to become leader of the Labour Party, saying "Ed Balls is the only Labour leadership candidate who offers a path to economic growth; his time at the treasury, with low borrowing and high growth, shows he is the true candidate of the centre in this leadership election. Only Ed offers a broad appeal to all voters and is not afraid to stand up to the left wing of the party, much like Tony Blair."^{[citation needed]}

On 15 September 2010, Follett, along with 54 other public figures, signed an open letter published in The Guardian stating their opposition to Pope Benedict XVI's state visit to the UK.^[6]

Begley graduated from Yale University in 1977 ^[2] and then began working at Newsweek, where she has spent most of her career. From 2002 to 2007, she wrote the "Science Journal" column in the Wall Street Journal. ^[3] In 2007, Begley's Newsweek cover-story on climate change focused on efforts to manufacture a controversy not reflected in the views of mainstream scientists.^[4] She is the author of Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain: How a New Science Reveals Our Extraordinary Potential to Transform Ourselves, as well as the co-author of The Mind and the Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force, along with psychiatrist Jeffrey M. Schwartz.

Dickson Beattie "Doc" Hendley (born March 19, 1979 in Augusta, Georgia) is the founder of Wine to Water, an American charitable organization devoted to providing clean water and sanitation to people around the world.

Hendley was born to Jeff and Libbi Hendley. He is the second of four children, with one older sister and two younger brothers. Hendley is married with two sons and resides in Boone, North Carolina.

After graduating from Ragsdale High School in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1997, he later received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from North Carolina State University in 2004.

Wine to Water[link]

Hendley is the founder and current president of Wine to Water, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit aid organization focused on providing clean water to needy people around the world.^[1] Wine to Water has worked in Sudan, India, Cambodia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Peru, South Africa, and Kenya^[2]. The organization responded to the 2010 Haiti earthquake by bringing a water purification system to be implemented within disaster areas.^[3]

Hendley first envisioned the concept of Wine to Water in 2003 while bartending and playing music in nightclubs around Raleigh, North Carolina^[4]. In January 2004, the first fundraiser was held at a local bar in Raleigh. With the money raised during the event, Hendley traveled to Darfur, [[Sudan],] and began installing water systems for victims of government-supported genocide^[5]. He then lived in Sudan for about a year. Upon his return to the United States, he began to focus his energy on developing Wine to Water programs in other countries and received local and national media attention as a result.

CNN Heroes Selection[link]

In May 2009, Hendley was selected as one of the CNN Heroes of the 2009 year out of nearly 9,000 submissions.^[6] In October 2009, a panel of judges — including Gen. Colin Powell, Whoopi Goldberg, Ted Turner, and Elton John^[7] — announced that Hendley was a "Top 10 Finalist for CNN’s Hero of Year."^[8] As of 2009, Wine to Water has implemented sustainable drinking water initiatives for over 25,000 individuals.^[9]

Kathryn Stockett is an American novelist. She is known for her 2009 debut novel, The Help, which is about African American maids working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s.

The Help is Stockett's début novel. She previously worked in magazine publishing while living in New York City.^[1] It took her five years to complete the book, which was rejected by 60 literary agents before agent Susan Ramer agreed to represent Stockett.^[1][2] The Help has since been published in 35 countries and three languages.^[3] As of August 2011, it has sold five million copies and has spent more than 100 weeks on the The New York Times Best Seller list.^[4][5] The Help climbed best seller charts a few months after it was released, eventually selling 5 million copies as of August 2011.^[6][7]

Stockett grew up in Jackson, Mississippi. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in English and Creative Writing, she moved to New York City. There she worked in magazine publishing and marketing, and met and married her ex-husband, Keith Rogers. They divorced in 2011. Stockett currently lives in Atlanta with their daughter.^[7][8]

Reflective of her first novel, Stockett was raised by an African American domestic worker in lieu of an absentee mother.^[9][10]

A lawsuit was filed in a Mississippi court by Abilene Cooper, a maid who used to work for Stockett's brother. It claimed that Stockett used her likeness in the book.^[11] A Hinds County, Mississippi judge threw the case out of court, citing the statute of limitations.^[12] Stockett denies her claim of stealing her likeness, and says she only met her briefly.^[12]
