Harlesden Station Contrasts
Harlesden Station Contrasts
This film was taken at Harlesden station in north London. It is served by Bakerloo Line 'tube' trains and the London Overground's air-conditioned trains travelling between Euston and Watford Junction. Located on the 'New Line' between Camden and Watford Junction which was specially built for local (urban) services, this station was opened by the London & North Western Railway in 1912. Baker Street & Waterloo Railway trains started calling here in 1917. This film comprises of a mix of historical footage from the 1980's and 1990's plus 'present day' footage from 2011. Viewers from outside of London may find the 'present-day era' station annoouncements to be of special interest. In addition to the usual 'next train' information there are also messages about the need for passengers to carry a bottle of water in this hot weather / what to do if someone is taken ill on a train and about Oyster PAYG (pay as you go) ticketing being valid on London Overground services but to obtain the best fare passengers must remember to touch-in and out. These can be heard at 22mins 50secs onwards. The trains seen are: Super 8 film of 1938 tube stock and British railways Class 501. SVHS videotape of 1972 Mkll Tube stock in original unpainted aluminium with red doors and BR Class 313 trains in Network SouthEast livery (including a rare 6 car working), DV of London Overground Class 378 and 972 Mkll Tube stock in London Underground Corporate livery. Harlesden High Street
Harlesden High Street
Harlesden High Street Written by Abhishek Majumdar, Directed by Neel Chaudhuri Cast: Arundhati Nag, Bikram Ghosh, Sandep Shikhar and members of the Indian Ensemble 6th August 7:30 pm & 7th August 3:30 & 7:30 pm, Ranga Shankara The play is set on the High Street in Harlesden, an area populated mostly by immigrant communities- Jamaicans, Poles and Pakistanis. Sometimes notorious in the press for its high crime rate, Harlesden is also home to the quiet aspirations and mundane frustrations of the working class. It is here that this play finds breath, in the voices and stories of three Pakistani immigrants- Rehaan, Karim and Ammi. Through the course of a day on Harlesden High Street, we share in the extraordinary histories and circumstances of these seemingly ordinary lives.
