Born in Sedan, in northeast France, in 1904, Congar's home was occupied by the Germans for much of World War I. During this time he kept extensive, illustrated diaries recording the occupation, which provide a unique historical insight into the war from a child's point of view.
In 1925 he joined the Dominican Order at Amiens. Following his theological studies at the Saulchoir, the Dominican studium, which at the time was located in Kain-la-Tombe, Belgium, and offered strong training in historical theology, Congar was ordained a priest in 1930. During World War II he was drafted into the French army as a chaplain, and was held from 1940 to 1945 as a prisoner of war by the Germans in Colditz.

Introduction to La Nouvelle Theologie with Simon Oliver
Dr Simon Oliver introduces a module belonging to the MA by distance learning programme of the Dept of Theology and Religious Studies in the University of Nottingham. This module focuses on the work of those, mainly French, Catholic theologians in the mid-twentieth century who reacted to the conservative neoscholasticism of the time (typified in the works of Garrigou-Lagrange) and produced ‘the new theology.’ This was the movement of ‘ressourcement’ that is found in the work of Henri de Lubac and Yves Congar, and which pave the way for the Second Vatican Council. This module argues that this theology, especially its work on the questions of nature and grace, has a wide significance for today

"At the beginning of the meeting Cardinal Ottaviani said that, to speed the work up, the experts will speak only if they are asked a question. At my side, Rahner was champing at the bit, and said to me what are we doing here . . . ?'" (Wednesday 3 June 1964) Yves Congar, OP, was one of the most important and influential theologians of the twentieth century. Much of this influence came as a result of his role as theological advisor to the bishops who participated at the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). After working under a cloud of ecclesiastical censure and suspicion in the decade prior to its start, Congar was, from beginning to end, an influential day-to-day participant in the council's work. He also managed to keep detailed personal notes throughout the time. At long last, the council diaries of Yves Congar are available in English! This material is a treasure trove of information and insight for anyone interested in the history of that council and its remarkable and historic teaching. It provides a window into the council's workings and the development of what would become a series of historic documents and declarations. It also offers Congar's own down-to-earth and personal perspective on many of the other remarkable figures who played a role in the council.

http://sspx.org - Certainly the most debated event of the twentieth century was the Second Vatican Council. Praised by many, criticized by others, Vatican II raises a lot of questions. In this video we will explain what the Second Vatican Council was.
Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council on October 11, 1962. John XXIII died the following year, but his successor, Paul VI, continued the Council and brought it to a close on December 8, 1965.
Vatican II consisted of four sessions. The first session (October 11 to December 3, 1962) the only one to occur during the pontificate of John XXIII promulgated no document; it was essentially used to shockingly discard the documents wisely prepared during the previous 3 years of preparation.
Vatican II was the twenty-first ecumenical council. It was the biggest in terms of the number of participants: over two thousand bishops attended. However, the Second Vatican Council was declared to be no more than a “pastoral” council, one that does not resolve questions of faith definitively, but which gives pastoral directives for the life of the Church. The Popes decided against defining dogmas, and so they renounced the infallibility, which normally pertains to a council. Thus its documents are not infallible.
Furthermore, some of its own defenders themselves proclaim loud and clear that the Council was a revolution in the Church. For instance, Cardinal Suenens made a parallel between the Council and the French Revolution, saying that Vatican II was 1789 in the Church; Fr. Yves Congar, a conciliar theologian, compared the Council to the Bolshevik Revolution, saying: “The Church has peacefully undergone its October Revolution.”
Vatican II wished to remain a “pastoral council,” however by the time it was over it was “dogmatized”.
A new spirit and teaching was imposed on the Catholic Church, in opposition with what the previous Popes had taught, for example: The documents on The Church, on The Bishops and on The Missions, present novelties on the question of the relationship of the bishops and the Pope: Collegiality. Lumen Gentium introduced a new notion of the priesthood. Lumen Gentium introduces a new notion on the liberty of worship and of conscience and on the concept of liberty; new notions previously condemned by the Popes. “Gaudium et Spes” reverses the purposes of marriage. A change that John Paul II will introduce in the New Canon Law. Also, new ideas of ecumenism and regarding the relations with non-Christian religions and even with atheists are also adopted. And we could go on…
In short we can say that Vatican II was a revolution in the Church; so many changes were introduced at the time and happened since, that anyone who would come to the present from the past, would not recognize the Church, neither in its teaching nor in its liturgy.
For further understanding and insight on this question, we recommend reading “I Accuse The Council!” and “A Bishop Speaks” both by Archbishop Lefebvre, which can be found at Angeluspress.org
Another great source we recommend is to read “The Second Vatican Council: An Unwritten Story” by Roberto de Mattei also available at Angeluspress.org
For those who would like to study in depth the issues raised by Vatican II we recommend reading: “Iota Unum” by Romano Amerio at AngelusPress.org

http://sspx.org - Certainly the most debated event of the twentieth century was the Second Vatican Council.

Yves Congar - późniejszy kardynał - określił go jako „rewolucję październikową w Kościele”.
- W kwietniu 1972 roku znany kanonista o.
-W styczniu 1973 roku Madiran opublikował list otwarty do papieża, w którym prosił biskupa Rzymu, by ten ofiarował Kościołowi „tradycyjną katolicką Mszę i chorał odpowiadający Mszałowi Piusa V”. List podpisały znane postaci francuskiego życia publicznego, m. in. pisarze Alexis Curvers i Louis Salleron, filozof Marcel De Corte, Henri Rambaud, adwokat, pisarz i dziennikarz Jacques Trémolet de Villers i wielu innych.
Ruch sprzeciwu wobec progresywizmu wzrósł dzięki zaangażowaniu arcybiskupa Marcela Lefebvre’a.
