Scholar: China Has New Respect for Confucius
The Olympic games are drawing attention to China, which is undergoing sweeping changes as it modernizes. Yet some in China look to the nation's past for inspiration, to the ideas of social harmony found in the thought of the ancient philosopher Confucius. Mike O'Sullivan spoke in Beijing with political scholar Daniel Bell, author of book called "China's New Confucianism," who says the ideas of the Chinese sage are being revived.

Figures From Chinese History: Confucius
Today, we are going to be starting off this first episode talking about Confucius. And if you are talking about notable figures in Chinese history, Confucius is a great place to start—because he really is the philosopher who defined Chinese society for the past two thousand years. Confucius is thought to have lived from 551 to 479 BC, during the so-called 'Spring and Autumn Period,' when China's Zhou Dynasty was slowly splitting up. This era later turned into the 'Warring States Period,' before China was unified again in around 200 BC. Confucius was born in the state of Lu. This is the modern day Shandong province. Now, at the time when Confucius was born, China was kind of like Medieval Europe. Different states were competing with each other for power. Confucius saw morality deteriorating and the aristocracy turning their back on the traditions of the Zhou Dynasty that Confucius viewed as a kind of Golden Age. Confucius felt he had a mission to return China to its former glory, to return to the 'Way' or Dao. Today, the Dao refers to China's traditional culture of self-cultivation and emphasis on the way of virtue. Confucius felt people in his age had lost true respect for the established rituals and norms of society. They merely carried out the formalities—without really understanding the true essence. To use the words of the time, "The world lacked the Dao." Thus Confucius started his mission of educating the populace. Confucius taught his disciples to become Gentlemen ...

World Religions: Confucianism
Stephen Prothero, the New York Times bestselling author of Religious Literacy, makes a fresh and provocative argument that, contrary to popular understanding, all religions are not simply different paths to the same end... and why this matters greatly for us. Readers of Huston Smith and Karen Armstrong will find much to ponder in God Is Not One. Book Description At the dawn of the twenty-first century, dizzying scientific and technological advancements, interconnected globalized economies, and even the so-called New Atheists have done nothing to change one thing: our world remains furiously religious. For good and for evil, religion is the single greatest influence in the world. We accept as self-evident that competing economic systems (capitalist or communist) or clashing political parties (Republican or Democratic) propose very different solutions to our planet's problems. So why do we pretend that the world's religious traditions are different paths to the same God? We blur the sharp distinctions between religions at our own peril, argues religion scholar Stephen Prothero, and it is time to replace naïve hopes of interreligious unity with deeper knowledge of religious differences. In Religious Literacy, Prothero demonstrated how little Americans know about their own religious traditions and why the world's religions should be taught in public schools. Now, in God Is Not One, Prothero provides readers with this much-needed content about each of the eight great religions ...

The History of Religions in Indonesia (Islam,Christianity,Hinduism,Buddhism,Confucianism)
CORRECTION : ISLAM CAME TO INDONESIA IN 7th CENTURY,NOT 17th CENTURY !!! The reason I'm making this video is to respond the ignorant and stupid comments of people who do not know about the history of religions living in Indonesia.exp : "Islam has killed many non-Muslims in Indonesia ! " really ? Do you find the evidence? , or you just watch and hear the propaganda news abroad ?. precisely in Indonesia, religious activities are protected by the government, both of religions that have been recognized as an official religion or religion not officially recognized.Indonesian people whatever their religion is very religious society, this proves there are no temples or houses of worship were destroyed, while many Indonesian people no longer embrace that religions.so anyone who wants to give a comment insulting Indonesia and religions that exist in this video, chances are I will not accept that comments, except comments which explains more about the history of religions in Indonesia..Please be Advise !!!

Confucius Institutes Exposed
Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Chinese Communist Party (CCP) spends a fortune on setting up Confucius Institutes (CI) and courses around the world. Nowadays, more and more people dislike CI, because they realize this is part of the CCP's united front policy, which jeopardizes academic freedom in CI and it is even anti-human rights in the name of Confucius. In July 2011, a petition with more than 4000 signatures was presented to the Australian New South Wales (NSW) senate. It requested to cancel Confucius courses in seven schools. The petition reads: "CI is controlled by the CCP's Education Department directly. It is not allowed to discuss the Tiananmen Massacre, Tibet, human rights in China, Taiwan, Falun Dafa and other sensitive topics. This is very strange. What teachers will teach and what values NSW takes should not be decided by a foreign government. And the courses should never be filled with political propaganda. " Former CCP diplomat Chen Yonglin, who has defected from the Chinese Embassy in Sydney, Australia, in 2005, said that CCP provided more than AUD200,000 to the NSW Education Department, in order to introduce Confucius courses in its primary and high schools. CCP provides free Chinese education and all teachers are appointed by the CCP. Its purpose is to expand the CCP's influence overseas. Chen: "The influence overseas is mainly to penetrate into and influence the mainstream society, by using culture. This can be ...

Putin Wins Confucius 'Peace' Prize for Opposing UN on Libya
For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ me.lt This year's Confucius Peace Prize, although cancelled by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, will go ahead, according to a prize committee member. The prize is set to be awarded to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin—not one of the usual rundown or advocates for world peace. Here's more. Vladimir Putin, Russia's prime minister and the man referred to by some as the "iron hand," is the unlikely winner of this year's so-called "Confucius Peace Prize." The prize was set up last year supposedly with the official backing of the Chinese regime's Ministry of Culture. The prize was apparently a reaction to the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, which enraged the Chinese regime. Princeton University professor Yu Yingshi says the prize is a joke. [Yu Yingshi, Princeton University Professor]: "The so-called Confucius Peace Prize itself is fundamentally a joke, it ultimately has no value. I also feel that Russia's prime minister won't be interested in it, I'm not clear if he will accept it or not. I feel, in brief, this is a really laughable thing, it demonstrates how the Communist Party's propaganda is completely out of touch with the times." Yet the Chinese regime may have realized many in the West saw through last year's prize as a propaganda trick. This year the prize doesn't have the backing of the Chinese regime. The Ministry of Culture announced in ...

Buddhism, Confucianism and organ donation
Dr Sang Giang Phan is trying to change attitudes among Sydney's Vietnamese and Chinese communities toward organ donation using stories about Buddha and Confucius. Buddhism Dr Sang refers to the Legend of the Hungry Tigress, in which Prince Siddartha (Buddha) gives part of his body to help a tigress feed her cubs. Confucianism Dr Sang refers to a quote attributed to Han dynasty General Xiahou Dun after he was hit by an arrow in the left eye during a battle some time between 169 and 280AD. "Essence of my father, blood of my mother, I cannot throw this away!", Xiahou Dun is quoted as saying in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 18. Historians dispute whether he did actually eat his eye or not.

The Wisdom of Confucius
Confucius (Chinese: 孔子; pinyin: Kǒng zǐ; Wade-Giles: K'ung-tzu, or Chinese: 孔夫子; pinyin: Kǒng Fūzǐ; Wade-Giles: K'ung-fu-tzu), literally "Master Kong," (traditionally September 28, 551 BCE -- 479 BCE was a Chinese thinker and social philosopher, whose teachings and philosophy have deeply influenced Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese thought and life. His philosophy emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. These values gained prominence in China over other doctrines, such as Legalism (法家) or Taoism (道家) during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE -- 220 CE). Confucius' thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy known as Confucianism (儒家). It was introduced to Europe by the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci, who was the first to Latinise the name as "Confucius."

Chinese Adolescents' Adaptation in New York City
Visit www.aaari.info for full video. This presentation is a preliminary report of our ongoing research project on the adaptation of 150 Chinese-American youths to the living environment in New York City. Following Sung's (1987) groundbreaking study, we have attempted to address similar issues with a focus on the psychological factors that mediate sociocultural and behavioral variables. To serve this purpose, new research instruments were developed, including a Background Questionnaire for collecting basic information about the participants, a semi-projective Sentence Completion Test, and a semi-structured Qualitative Interview composed of 41 open-ended questions about the interviewees' self-image, their identities as Chinese Americans, their family situation, their view of gender roles, attitudes toward family, peers, friends, school, and teachers, extracurricular activities, homework, and dating practices. Participants' responses gathered so far suggest that 1) in spite of the relatively low socioeconomic status and frequent English language problems in their families, many Chinatown youths have fought against all odds to become academically successful; 2) Chinatown youths' success can be attributed to a large extent to the core cultural emphasis on education which is deeply rooted in Confucianism as well as a perennial sense of predicament; 3) due to the difficulty of adjusting to the American-dominated system, a considerable number of Chinatown youth made different ...
