European Commission to boycott Euro 2012
European Commission to boycott Euro 2012
The European Commission said on Monday that president Jose Manuel Barroso will not attend any events in Ukraine if the political situation in the country does not change. Former opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko is serving a 7 year prison sentence for abuse of office, and is due to face a second trial on tax evasion charges. The Commission believes that her imprisonment is politically motivated. "We have very big concerns of what is happening in Ukraine. As far as the president is concerned, it is clear that as things stand now, the president has no intention of going to Ukraine or indeed participate in events in Ukraine at this point in time", EC's spokesperson said. The EU announcement comes now that various European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, are considering boycotting the Euro 2012 football tournament that Ukraine is co-hosting in six weeks. They want to protest against the alleged mistreatment of Tymoshenko as pictures of her bruised body were released on Friday. Tymoshenko, currently on a hunger strike, claims she was beaten up by the prison guards. EU Justice Commissioner Vivianne Reding has already confirmed she will not participate in the Open Ceremony of the Euro 2012. "You cannot close your eyes on human rights", she said.

EU Commission calls for 2013 budget rise
EU Commission calls for 2013 budget rise
www.euronews.com The European Commission has proposed a near seven percent increase in its budget for next year. EU chiefs insisted the rise was needed to help boost growth across the bloc. But the plans come at a sensitive time, given that Brussels has led calls for governments to slash public spending. Responding to a question posed by euronews, the EU parliament's president Martin Schulz, who was speaking in the European Commission and supports the plans, said: "To what extent is it useful to discuss that we must cut a balanced budget? Is it not more meaningful to discuss what we should do with a balanced budget of the European Union, to create growth, exactly in those member states who are suffering an economic crisis." The increase is also needed to meet prior budget commitments, the Commission has said. But some MEPs believe the demand, in such austere times, is unacceptable. "Its complete double standards, hypocrisy of the worst order. 'Austerity should be applying to everybody else but in Europe our budget is for investment and therefore can't be cut at all'. That's nonsense. Everybody knows that there is a lot fat in the European budget that can be saved," Conservative MEP Martin Callanan complained. The Commission also faces an uphill task convincing EU governments, with Britain, Germany and France calling for it to scale back its plans. euronews I talk - Is the European Commission just another red tape brigade in the EU?
www.euronews.com Alex Taylor "We all hate annoying bureaucracy and a mindless filling out of useless forms, whether it be on paper or on the net. Is the European Commission doing anything to reduce red tape from our daily lives or is it part of the problem? Here to answer your questions is the EU Commissioner for Inter-Institutional Relations and Administration Maroš Šefčovič. Did I pronounce your name right?" Maroš Šefčovič: "Perfect, very good, very good pronunciation." Alex Taylor: "You say Maroš....?" Maroš Šefčovič: "Cheftchovitch" Alex Taylor: "Cheftchovitch. OK right. You're ready to answer our citizens' questions?" Maroš Šefčovič: "Absolutely, yes." Alex Taylor: "First question to you from Rafael." "I want to know why the administration is so burdened with paperwork. There's so much of it in relation to the administration; unemployment, the school enrolment of children.... there's just too much! There are plenty of Municipalities, lots of jurisdictions, regional and federal and it's very difficult to understand it all here in Brussels." Alex Taylor: "We all thought that the internet was going to make things much easier, less paper and so forth. It's not the case, why?" Maroš Šefčovič: "Not always but I have to agree with our citizen here that sometimes we still have overlapping competencies, especially between the local and national level and sometimes even the European one." Alex Taylor: "Can't you do anything about that?" Maroš Šefčovič: "Yes of course. I think ...

euronews I talk - Should the European Commission make a decision on assisted suicide?
www.euronews.com Should those suffering from incurable diseases have the right to assisted suicide? At the moment this issue varies from country to country, and some have yet to decide. Should you have the right to die with dignity? Euronews' Alex Taylor speaks to Doctor Bernard Devalois, Head of the Palliative Care Unit at the Hospital of Pontoise in France, putting forward your questions on I-talk. The first question comes from Alexandre from France: "As a Frenchman, I'm asking the question because there are a lot of discussions in France on whether we should allow assisted suicide, and the similarity between suicide and assisted suicide, and no law has been passed, either in France or Europe to harmonise the rules. To allow people to die with dignity. "So as more and more people talk about this, when will a European law be passed that will help people to die with dignity?" *Alex Taylor:* "A fundamental question. There's no agreement between different countries. What is the European position? Is there one?" *Dr Bernard Devalois:* "There is no European position as it's a complicated issue. Dying with dignity is not at all the same as assisted suicide or lethal injection. These are different things. Palliative care is to ensure that people die with dignity. In France for example there is a law on that..." *Alex Taylor:* "But why can't we have the same law in all of the countries?" *Dr Bernard Devalois:* "So I think there is already a problem to use the correct terms ...

European Commission Questions Facebook Privacy Policy
European Commission Questions Facebook Privacy Policy
Facebook is coming under attack in Europe for its advertising model. According to the Telegraph, the European Commission is planning to introduce legislation early next year that would ban targeted advertising on the site. The social network, like many other Internet companies, allows advertisers to target their audience based on various factors including location, demographics, and likes. The Telegraph calls this practice "eavesdropping" and explained that Facebook could face legal action or a large fine if the law is implemented. In response to this news, a Facebook spokesperson told WebProNews that the accusations were "inaccurate and sensational." The spokesperson went on to say that Facebook users give their consent to be served relevant ads when they sign up for the service. Is Facebook crossing the line, or are the European claims over the top?

Commission pulls plug on 'racist', 'sexist' propaganda video
The European Commission this week pulled the plug on this 127.000 euro propaganda video after it was accussed of being 'racist' and 'sexist.' The video, intended to promote the benefits of EU enlargement, shows three men from various ethnic minorities using different threatening martial-arts skills surrounding a young white woman dressed in a yellow jumpsuit similar to that worn by the heroine in the Hollywood hit movies "Kill Bill." The three men include a Kung Fu master from East Asia, a black man practicing the Brazilian art of Capoeira, and an Asian man doing Kalaripayattu moves. Stefano Sannino, the official in charge of the Commission's enlargement and neighbourhood policy, insisted that the film, targeting 16 to 24-year olds, had been well received by target audiences and focus groups. "The clip featured typical characters for the martial arts genre: it started with demonstration of their skills and ended with all characters showing their mutual respect, concluding in a position of peace and harmony. The genre was chosen to attract young people and to raise their curiosity on an important EU policy," he said. But following many complaints, Mr Sannino said that, despite the €127000 production cost, the two minute video would be axed. "The clip was absolutely not intended to be racist and we obviously regret that it has been perceived in this way," he said. "We apologise to anyone who may have felt offended. Given these controversies, we have decided to stop the ...

euronews U talk - What is the European Citizens' Initiative?
www.euronews.com In this edition of U-talk, Damien, from Lyon, France, poses this question: "I was recently approached in the street and asked to sign a European Citizens' Initiative to improve animal protection in the European Union. The organisers explained that if they got enough signatures the European Commission would be obliged to study the matter. Is this true?" Malgorzata Kurowska, Senior Communications Officer for Europe Direct, responds: "Indeed, as from 1 April 2012, the new European Citizens' Initiative allows European citizens to be more directly involved in the legislative procedure of the European Union. It will let them invite the European Commission to propose a new piece of legislation. "To get started, the interested parties need to set up a special committee. This committee has to be made up of at least seven EU citizens who are old enough to vote in European Parliament elections and living in at least seven different European countries. "The committee, acting as an official organiser of the initiative, then needs to register on the special website of the European Commission. "The European Commission then has two months to verify if the provided data are correct and if the issue concerns matters where the EU has the competence to act and then it will validate the registration. "After the initiative is registered, the committee can start collecting statements of support from the European citizens. The organisers have one year to do so. The statements ...

European Commission President Barroso Gives first State of the Union Speech
And now on to Strasbourg, where Members of the European Parliament held a plenary session on Tuesday. President of The European Commission José Barroso charted out the commission's work for the coming 12 months. Here's more. On Tuesday, European Commission president José Manuel Barroso delivered his first state of the union speech before the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Mr. Barroso says the Union withstood the test of the financial crisis, but a number of key challenges lie ahead. He said Europe has to move forward towards matching its monetary union with a real economic union among its member states. [José Manuel Barroso, President, European Commission]: "This is Europe's moment of truth. Europe must show that it is more than 27 different national solutions. We either swim together or sink separately." Other key challenges include, improving economic governance to prevent any financial crisis in the future and creating jobs for the unemployed. The Commission is planning to propose a "European Vacancy Monitor" later this year to show where jobs are available and what sills are in demand. [José Manuel Barroso, President, European Commission]: "Our goal is growth, sustainable growth, inclusive growth. This is our overarching priority. This is where we need to invest." Growing Together - EU Enlargement Ads
Growing Together - EU Enlargement Ads
RareInvestment.com - The European Commission has withdrawn a video promoting EU enlargement after accusations that it was racist, the BBC reports. The video, called 'Growing Together', shows a white woman dressed in a yellow jumpsuit being threatened in an abandoned warehouse by three ethnic minority men a Chinese-looking man doing kung fu, an Indian-looking man wielding a sword and practicing kalaripayattu (a martial art that originated in south India), and a black man who menaces her in the style of capoeira (a Brazilian martial art). But after gazing calmly at the trio, the woman multiples herself 12 times and surrounds the three men, following which the men drop their weapons and they all sit down cross-legged as the woman turns into the 12 stars on the EU flag. The video ends with the slogan "The more we are, the stronger we are". In a statement, Stefano Sannino, Director General of Enlargement for the European Commission, said that while feedback from the target audience of 16 to 24 year olds "who understand the plots and themes of martial arts films and video games" had been positive, it was pulling the video owing to concerns about its message. "We apologize to anyone who may have felt offended. Given these controversies, we have decided to stop the campaign immediately and to withdraw the video," he said. Independent think-tank Open Europe questioned whether viral videos were the way to go for the EU. "It is strange because normally there is something of the 'Kum ...
