Tribal Students Left Behind in Assam
Forced to learn in the Bengali medium, tribal students in the Cachar District of Assam are falling dreadfully behind. Carrying bundles of sticks, a young man tells the painful story of his failed education. A member of the Dimasa tribe, he attended school in the Cachari Hills of Assam. However, his classes were taught in Bengali, and so he struggled to understand content and take exams. After failing his final exams for the third time, he walked away from his education. The Dimasa-Cacharis are one of the largest tribes in northeast India and said to be the earliest inhabitants of the Brahmaputra Valley. Their cultural heritage and tribal customs face the dangers of extinction feared by many traditional communities in India. And more, opportunities for development and socio-economic advancement lag in the community as Dimasa-Cachari children vie for education in the Bengali medium, which they find difficult to understand. Our community correspondent Ajit Singh was born in the Cachar district of Assam. He identifies with the struggles faced by these tribal students as he watches his own siblings suffer similar experiences. Still, Ajit believes that education is a path towards a better future. Reporting from the lush hillside of region, he reveals the difficulties that students face in an educational system that is not concerned with meeting their needs. A conversation with a mother in the Dimasa-Cachari community reveals, "All the schools in the area are taught in the ...

No Transport For The Poor
In Cachar district of Assam, the lack of publicly funded transportation hassles the lives of the poor. Many villagers in Cachar district commute regularly to the district headquarters, Sildar. Over sixty thousands travel daily, and an overwhelming majority rely on the bus service to do so. But the state disengagement from the transport sector and the current lack of investment are drastically undermining the quality and availability of the government-funded transport service. Currently, only eight vehicles are run by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC). These buses are in no way able to keep up public demand. As a result, many passengers have to travel on privately owned buses, paying much higher fares for the same service. Indra is a fruit seller living in Pakadnaki, a village some kilometers away from Sildar. Travelling to the city headquarters is a necessity for him, in order to sell the fruits he is growing in his village, but with no public bus to take him there, his business is far from profitable. "To travel to Pakadnaki, I have to spend Rs 50 daily for a private vehicle. I earn about Rs 100 each day. It is too expensive for the poor to afford this. ASTC buses could bring relief to us, poor people" says Indra. He also points out that the situation has worsened recently due to the booming inflation that plagues the Indian economy. Indeed, private bus companies instantly passed the costs of inflation on customers. Similarly, collective jeeps and taxis, that ...

Gruesome Murder of Tribal Leader
Babul Rongmei was killed outside his home in Assam by his rivals. In today?s video, Community Correspondent Ajit Singh brings to us news of the grim murder of one of Cachar district?s leading politicians. Babul Rongmei, Chairman of the Barak Valley Hill Tribes Development Council was shot dead on the morning of July 10th. His killers, three men of a motorbike, have been identified as having links to the NSCN-K, a militant fraction of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland. Ajit Singh tells us, ?Babul Rongmei was a reliable and bright leader. He belonged to the Naga community and spent his life working for the empowerment of his people.? The Barak Valley Hill Tribe Development Council is an autonomous body set up by the Government of Assam. It is allocated an annual budget of 20 crores for the development of minority tribes in the area, and members of this council hold a significant amount of power. Babul Rongmei and his team came into power after the entire council was dissolved on charges of corruption. Babul had filed a case against some members of this previous council, for which they served six months in prison. Locals believe that it was this conflict that led to his death. ?Although his killers had links with the NSCN-K, many people believe that they were hired by Babul Rongmei?s rivals. The NSCN-K is known to issue warnings against their victims before they harm them. In this case, there was no warning, nothing. It was all out of the blue.? The Sentinel ...

Sewage Floods in Monsoon
In Assam, roads and drains get flooded every year during the rains. The monsoon season in Assam lasts from March till September. During these seven months, cities like Silchar in Cochar district face continuous flooding. Today our Community Correspondent Ajit Singh shows us how this flooding affects his town of Silchar in Cachar District. Though Silchar is the second busiest area in Assam after Guwahati, it lacks adequate infrastructure to support its residents? needs. For years on end, the municipality has not bothered to build a proper drainage system. Ajit Singh mentions that while some areas of the town have drainage pipes, there are others where none are to be found. Because of this haphazard nature of work, sewage water leaks out onto roads and alleyways, leaving the town reeking. Not only this, but there are not enough garbage bins in the town either. Thus, people throw their garbage wherever they find open spaces. This trash then blocks up drainage lines, causing floods even when there is the slightest rain fall. Ajit moved to Silchar in 2001. He believes that over the years, the flooding situation has only worsened. It has also had negative consequences for the town?s economy; customers do not enter many shops as open drains lie water logged near their entrances. Many townspeople also fall sick during this season, and get harmful boils on their soles as a result of wading through the dirty water. Silchar is a fast growing town, both in terms of population and ...

It is the economic gateway to the state of Mizoram and part of Manipur. It is 343 kilometres (213 mi) south east of Guwahati. The city of Silchar is the second largest city in the state of Assam and an important commercial centre and consequently witnesses the settlement of a sizable population of traders from distant parts of India.
