Mein nahi makhan khayo - Poem by Surdas in vraj bhasha
Mein nahi makhan khayo - Poem by Surdas in vraj bhasha
Poem by blind poet Surdas from 15th century about young Krishna. Krishna was brought up in a foster home of Nand and Yashoda. The poet describes young Krishnas antics. Krishna would steal butter from the kitchen, but would deny it when confronted by Yashoda. In this song he gives all kinds of false denials and in the end lays guilt on Yashoda. He tells her " you are accusing me of stealing butter because you are not my real mother !" Yashoda fully being aware of these false denials still hugs him with tearful eyes. I don't know Hindi well and not a shred of Brija Bhasha of Surdas. With some surfing on internet and some guessing I have attempted to ascertain meaning. Any correction of mistakes would be appreciated.

This is a poem from Sant Tulsidas's Vinay-Patrika collection of humble petitions to Lord Rama. Veena Sahabuddhe ji sings this gem in raag Todi.

Pathanay khan Sings - Khawaja Ghulam Farid * Medaa Ishaq Vi Tuoon *
Pathanay khan Sings - Khwaja Ghulm Farid ******************************** About Singer: Pathanay Khan (real name: Ghulam Muhammad; 1926 - 2000) was a great Seraiki folk singer from Pakistan. He sang mostly Kafis or Ghazals, which were largely based on the Sufi poetry of Khwaja Ghulam Farid and Shah Hussain. He was born in 1926 in the village Basti Tambu Wali, situated in the heart of the Thal Desert, several miles from Kot Addu, (Punjab, Pakistan). When he was only a few years old, his father and mother seprated. She took her son along and went to Kot Addu to stay with her father. When the boy fell seriously ill, his mother took him to a syed's house. The syed's wife looked after him, and advised his mother to change his name because it seemed too heavy for him. Her daughter commented that he looked like Pathana (in that region, a name symbolising love and valour), and so from that day onwards he was known as Pathanay Khan. His mother credited the new name for saving the child's life. Life: Pathanay Khan was very attached to his mother. She took good care of him and tried to educate him. However, he, like his father Khameesa Khan, spent his time wandering, contemplating and singing. His nature lured him away from school after the seventh standard. He began singing, mostly the Kafis of Khwaja Ghulam Farid, the saint of Bahawalpur. His first teacher was Baba Mir Khan, who taught him everything he knew. Singing alone did not earn him enough, so the young Pathanay Khan ...

Rupert Snell - Autobiography is Another Story: "Lives" in Hindi
In this fascinating talk, Hindi Urdu Flagship Director, Rupert Snell, presents his recent work on the diverse genre of autobiographical writing in Hindi. The talk, entitled Autobiography is Another Story: "Lives" in Hindi, features audio recordings of a number of Hindi Urdu Flagship students and faculty reading from a wide variety of Hindi autobiographies. According to Snell, his research "looks at several kinds of autobiographical writing in Hindi -- revisiting a genre in which I have previously done translations and literary analysis. The texts included here vary widely, from self-consciously literary works to more spontaneous memoirs by 'amateur' writers. Most of the examples were written in the second half of the 20th century, but their narratives typically pertain to its first half and hence show a natural intertextuality in shared themes such as the Independence movement. Just as there are similarities of theme, so are there wide differences in literary conventions, narrative technique, and tone, and my aim is to compare and celebrate these in an exploratory overview of the genre." Snell's published work includes numerous textbooks and readers in Hindi and its pre-modern dialects. His research interests focus on the poetics of Braj Bhasha poetry from temple and court, and he is preparing a translation of the Satsai of Biharilal for the Murty Classical Library of India (Harvard University Press). His interests in Hindi autobiography stem from his translation of ...

Violent Indian festival of Lathmar holi!
Violent Indian festival of Lathmar holi!
Women hitting men with the help of Laathis (large staffs or sticks) and men protecting themselves using metal shields. These holi celebrations are taking place around Mathura, India. March 2012. Lath mar Holi takes place well before the actual Holi celebration. It takes place at Barsana near Mathura in the state of Uttar Pradesh. People flock to the suburban town of Barsana near Mathura to see Lath Mar Holi, a special form of traditional festivity. Legend has it that Lord Krishna visited his beloved Radha's village on this day and playfully teased her and her friends. Taking offence at this, the women of Barsana chased him away. Since then, men from Krishna's village, Nandgaon, visit Barsana to play Holi in the town which has the distinction of having the only temple dedicated to Radha in India. In the sprawling compound of the Radha Rani temple in Barsana, thousands gather to witness the Lath Mar holi when women beat up men with sticks as those on the sidelines become hysterical, sing Holi Songs and shout Sri Radhey or Sri Krishna. The Holi songs of Braj mandal are sung in pure Braj Bhasha. On the first day of Lath Mar Holi gops ( shepherds ) from Nandgaon come to Barsana to play Holi with the gopis of Barsana. The festival begins with a ceremony at the Radha Rani temple. After this ceremony gops then march out of the temple on the Rang Rangeeli Gali where they stop to play holi with the gopis, who stand in groups along the street. The second day gops from Barsana go to ...
