WorldLeadersTV: KENYA: SUSTAINABLE ENERGY for the POOR: UNEP's GISELE BUNDCHEN
MaximsNewsNetwork: 13 January 2011 -- Nairobi, Kenya -- United Nations Environmental Programme: UNEP: On her first official visit to Africa, UNEP Goodwill Ambassador and iconic face of fashion, Gisele Bündchen, went to the grassroots level in Kenya to experience the reality of energy poverty and to see how Kenyans are transforming their lives by accessing sustainable energy. Gisele, who has recently been named the 'world's greenest celebrity', told a press conference at the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi that access to adequate fuels for cooking is also a major challenge, with many families still dependent on wood which produces toxic smoke, impacting the health of women and children. Around half the world's population cook on open indoor fires and each year over 2.5 million people die prematurely as a result of breathing in emissions from these cook stoves, primarily from a substance called black carbon, also known as soot. Many more are blighted by ill health, such as chronic bronchitis. Gisele spoke about the advantages of slow burning cooking stoves. While gains have been made in accessing electricity in the past two decades, huge gaps still remain. One in every five people on the planet do not have access to electricity. In Sub-Saharan Africa some 70 percent of the population have no electricity, while in Kenya only 18 percent of households have power. Gisele said that this amounted to injustice. UNEP upgrade hoax?
www.ntv.co.ke Analysts now say Kenya's celebration about the upgrading of UNEP may be premature. Critics say the organization remains as weak as it has always been. The summit has granted UNEP some of the concessions that countries like Kenya wanted but it remains a low priority programme in the UN system. But as NTV's Joe Ageyo reports the Kenyan delegation says the concession given at the meeting will elevate Kenya's standing in the world.

Which way UNEP?
www.ntv.co.ke A key agenda at the meeting will be on what to do with the UN Environment Programme that is based here in Nairobi. The organization has been existence for 40 years but now critics say it has been rendered almost irrelevant by two many other bodies doing a similar job. But it is a highly political issue that is pitting developing countries such as Kenya against their richer counterparts. NTV's Joe Ageyo has details of what is at stake and why Kenya is taking a keen interest in how this debate goes.

UNEP Champions of the Earth 2012 Laureate: (Inspiration and Action) Dr. Bertrand Piccard
Dr. Bertrand Piccard (Switzerland) is awarded for raising global awareness of the possibilities of renewable energy-driven transport. Passionate about all forms of flying since his childhood, he was one of the pioneers of hang gliding and microlight aviation in the 1970s. He then initiated the "Breitling Orbiter" project, which in 1999 achieved the first non-stop balloon flight around the globe, capturing the records for the longest flight in the history of aviation in terms of duration and distance. "Exploration in the 21st century is no longer about conquering new territories, but about developing clean technologies in order to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels." says Dr. Piccard.
