Edward Walter Furlong (born August 2, 1977) is an American actor whose best known film roles are John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Daniel Vinyard in American History X. He is a two-time Saturn Award nominee, winning the 1992 Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor for his performance in Terminator 2. He also won the 1992 MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance for his work in the film.

Early life[link]

Furlong was born in Glendale, California, near Burbank, the son of Eleanor (née Tafoya), a youth-center worker, and an unknown father. He is of Mexican descent on his mother's side, and also has Russian and possibly Native American ancestry.^[1][2] Furlong has a younger half-brother, Bobby Torres, from his mother's marriage to Moises Torres. Furlong moved in with his aunt and uncle, Nancy Tafoya and Sean Furlong, in 1990; the two gained legal guardianship of Furlong in September 1991 and subsequently lost it to his mother in August 1993.^[3] Furlong attended Charles W. Eliot Middle School in Altadena, and South Pasadena Junior High School in South Pasadena, California. He never completed high school. He became legally emancipated at the age of 16.^[4]

1990s[link]

In 1991, Furlong began his film career as John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a role that earned him an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Role and a Saturn Award for best young actor. He was discovered for the part by casting director Mali Finn while visiting the Pasadena Boys and Girls Club. Furlong had no acting ambitions. He has stated, "I fell into [acting], it wasn't something that I planned".^[5]

He followed this role with a string of moderately successful high-profile films and indies, sharing the screen with Meryl Streep and Liam Neeson in Before and After; Tim Roth, Maximilian Schell, and Vanessa Redgrave in Little Odessa; and Anthony Edwards in Pet Sematary Two.

In 1993, Furlong was featured in Aerosmith's music video for "Livin' on the Edge". This was also the only major Aerosmith video from Get a Grip not to feature Alicia Silverstone. He played the lead role of Michael Brower, a horror and videogame-obsessed teen in the 1994 film Brainscan. In 1995, he starred in the film adaptation of Truman Capote's The Grass Harp.

In 1998, he starred in American History X alongside Edward Norton and appeared in his first comedy role in Pecker, directed by John Waters. Of his title role in Pecker, Furlong stated, "It's true most of the characters that I've played so far are kind of like suicidal. Really dark roles, which I like. But I wanted to do something different and John gave me a chance to do that."^[6]

In 1999, he starred in the film Detroit Rock City. During filming he met Natasha Lyonne, whom he then dated.^[7]

2000s[link]

In 2000, Furlong played a young convict in Steve Buscemi's film Animal Factory. The following year, he took a role in I Cavalieri che fecero l'impresa aka The Knights of the Quest, a film by Italian filmmaker Pupi Avati. Furlong worked steadily over the next few years, acting in five other films between 2003 and 2005.

In 2003, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was released. Despite having played the role of John Connor in Terminator 2, Furlong was not cast to reprise the role. Instead the part was played by Nick Stahl. Furlong later stated, "It just wasn't the time. I was going through my own thing at the point in my life – whatever, it just wasn't meant to be".^[8]

That same year, he appeared in a music video for Metallica's "The Unnamed Feeling".^[9]

In 2005, Furlong played the lead in the fourth film in The Crow series, The Crow: Wicked Prayer, alongside David Boreanaz and Tara Reid. The film was planned for a theatrical release, but eventually went straight to DVD. Despite this, Furlong was optimistic, stating, "I feel through word of mouth people will find it. There's a huge base for Crow fans. Just from what I've seen on the Internet, people are really excited about it. Personally, I say it's the best one since the first one".^[5]

He starred as Jimmy in Jimmy & Judy in 2006, during which time he met Rachael Bella. The two became romantically involved and later married. In 2006 and again in 2010, Furlong appeared as a guest star on five episodes of the television program CSI: NY as character Shane Casey.

Furlong appeared in the 2009 remake of the 1988 horror classic Night of the Demons shot in New Orleans.

Several of Furlong's recent films are still in post-production, or have been shown at film festivals rather than in major theatrical release. He appeared in the film Kingshighway, which was due to be released 2010.^[10] He starred in Mortician 3D alongside Method Man.^[11] He played the role of Ravi in the psychological thriller Crave, which was filmed in Detroit, Michigan. Furlong plays the lead role alongside Michael Berryman in the upcoming Canadian horror thriller Below Zero 3-D.^[12]

He also had a role in the 2011 Seth Rogen film, The Green Hornet.

In 2011 he will star in "This is not a Movie", a Mexican production spoken in English, written and directed by Olallo Rubio and co starring Peter Coyote and Edi Gathegi. The film is scored by ex-Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. The film has been released in Germany in 2010 and Mexico in January 2011.^[13]

After Furlong achieved particular popularity in Japan as a result of Terminator 2,^{[citation needed]} he appeared in TV advertisements for various Japanese products.^[14] He also released an album in Japan called Hold on Tight, which included a cover of The Doors song "People Are Strange".^[15] Furlong would later say that the music was "the exact opposite of rock" and "a bad mistake".^[16]

Furlong has also modeled, in 1996 for Calvin Klein^[17] and for The Gap.^{[citation needed]}

Personal life[link]

Furlong was romantically involved with Natasha Lyonne,^[7] Jolene Blalock,^[18] and Paris Hilton.^[7][19] He took up with his 29-year-old former tutor, Jacqueline Domac, who became his manager for several years.^[20] They dated from 1993 to 1998.^[7]

Furlong married Rachael Bella on April 19, 2006. The couple's son, Ethan Page Furlong, was born on September 21, 2006.^[21] On July 8, 2009, Rachael Bella filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.^[22] In October 2010, Bella received a restraining order from a court, against Furlong. She claimed he threatened to commit suicide,^[23] repeatedly refused to undergo any drug tests,^[24] and that he told her he hit their son's testicles.^[25] He was also ordered by the court to undergo counselling.^[26] She told the court he regularly drove past her house in an intimidating manner, and threatened to hire people to beat her with metal chains and baseball bats.^[27] In January 2011 Furlong told a judge he is "completely broke", and cannot afford to pay child support.^[28] Furlong was ordered to pay Bella over $15,000 in backdated child support in October 2011.^[29]

Substance abuse and legal problems[link]

Furlong had a long battle with alcoholism and drug addiction.

On 24 April 2001 he was hospitalized for a suspected heroin overdose after being found unconscious in a pool of his own vomit.^[30]

On 25 September 2001 he was arrested twice in the same day for two separate incidents involving driving without a license and DUI.^[31][32] After being in and out of rehab,^[19] he stated that, "The first year of quitting (drugs) is the hardest thing I've ever had to do, physically and mentally."^[33]

In September 2004, Furlong was arrested for public intoxication following an incident at a Meijer grocery store in Florence, Kentucky (in the Cincinnati area), where he was filming the independent film Jimmy and Judy. According to the police report, he and some friends were getting rowdy and yanking lobsters out of the store's tank. When police arrived, an unsteady Furlong, who "smelled of booze," began to "turn around in circles" when an officer tried to frisk him. Furlong spent a few hours in custody before making bail on the misdemeanor count.^[34][35]

In December 2006 he told "People" magazine that he smokes 2-3 packs of cigarettes a day.^[36] At the same time he also admitted being addicted to cocaine and heroin from the age of 22 to 26.^[37]

On 11 January 2010, Furlong was arrested and jailed for violating his probation stemming from the restraining order his estranged wife filed.^[38] That evening he was still in jail needing to post a $75,000 bond for release. He was released the following morning.^[38]

Shane Casey (born 1989) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Dunhill and with the Waterford senior inter-county team.

Casey has played with this local club, Dunhill since underage and presently plays with the club in the Waterford Intermediate Hurling Championship and the Waterford Intermediate Football Championship. At underage, Casey played with the amalgamation club Dunhill/Fenor.

Inter-county[link]

At inter-county level, Casey plays with Waterford. Casey made his championship debut on 26 July 2009 having been named in the team to face Galway in the 2009 All-Ireland quarter-final.^[1] Casey also presently plays with the Waterford under-21 team. Casey will feature in the team to face Clare in the Munster Under-21 Hurling Final on 29 July 2009.^[2]

Tia Carrere (born Althea Rae Janairo on January 2, 1967) is an American actress, model, voice artist, and singer who obtained her first big break being a regular on the daytime soap opera General Hospital.

She is most widely known for her roles as Cassandra Wong in the feature films Wayne's World and Wayne's World 2, Nani in Lilo & Stitch its sequel films and Lilo & Stitch: The Series, Queen Tyr'ahnee in Duck Dodgers, as Sydney Fox in the syndicated television series Relic Hunter, and her participation as a contestant in the second season of the United States version of Dancing with the Stars and the fifth season of The Celebrity Apprentice.

Early life[link]

Carrere was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, the daughter of Filipino parents, Audrey Duhinio Janairo, a computer supervisor, and Alexander Janairo, a banker.^[1] Carrere identifies herself as being of "Filipino, Spanish, and Chinese descent ... raised on Hawaii."^[2] Carrere attended Sacred Hearts Academy, an all-girls school. Carrere longed to be a singer as a child. Although she was eliminated during the first round of her 1985 Star Search appearance at the age of 17, she was spotted by a local producer while shopping at a Waikiki grocery store and was cast in the movie Aloha Summer, which he produced and had a cameo in.^[3].

Film and television career[link]

Following this initial success, Carrere returned to Los Angeles and, after working several months as a model, landed a first ever role in the U.S. TV series Airwolf in early 1985. Her first major breakthrough was in the daytime soap opera General Hospital. She played the role of Jade Soong Chung from 1985 to 1987. She also had a guest appearance on Tour of Duty and The A-Team, which was supposed to lead to her joining the cast. Unfortunately, her General Hospital obligations prevented her from joining the team. Her character was dropped after one episode, and was never mentioned again. She also made guest appearances on the shows MacGyver ("The Wish Child") as a sexy karate instructor, as well as a different assassin character in a later episode ("Murderer's Sky"), on Anything But Love as the adopted daughter of Marty Gold (Richard Lewis), and Married... with Children as Piper Bauman, a rival of Kelly Bundy, who attempted to steal a modeling job from her.

After appearing in the 1991 action films Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man and Showdown in Little Tokyo, she emerged into the public spotlight when cast as Cassandra, a rock singer and love interest of Mike Myers' character Wayne in Wayne's World (1992)—a role she reprised the next year in Wayne's World 2. A trained singer, Carrere performed all of her own songs in the two films, and the Wayne's World soundtrack features her vocals. She turned down a role in Baywatch to audition for Wayne's World. In 1992, People magazine named her to its annual "50 most beautiful people" list.

In 1992, Carrere married Lebanese-American producer Elie Samaha, and appeared in several of his films. Other roles in prominent films include the parts of smuggler Juno Skinner in True Lies (a 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger action film), a mixed African-Japanese computer expert in Rising Sun (a thriller written by Michael Crichton starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes), robber Gina Walker in The Immortals (1995), and secretary Victoria Chappell in High School High (a 1996 parody). She also starred as Ari, a space marine-turned pirate in the 1995 adventure/puzzle game The Daedalus Encounter. She also starred as the evil witch/queen in the 1997 Universal Films picture Kull the Conqueror, co-starring with Kevin Sorbo.

From 1999 to 2002, Carrere starred as archeology professor Sydney Fox in Relic Hunter, a syndicated action-adventure series strongly reminiscent of the Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider films and video games. At this time, Carrere was featured in men's magazine Maxim. Relic Hunter lasted for a total of three contracted television seasons. Carrere then provided the voice of Lilo's sister "Nani" in the animated film Lilo and Stitch (2002) and its spinoffs, as well as the voice of Queen Tyr'ahnee from the 2003 Duck Dodgers animated series. She also provided the voice of Snookie in the 2005 animated film Aloha, Scooby-Doo!.^[4]

She participated as a contestant on the popular reality show Dancing with the Stars, but was eliminated, placing sixth overall. Carrere later participated in the fifth season of The Celebrity Apprentice and was axed in the fifth week of the show.

Carrere posed nude for the January 2003 issue of Playboy magazine. Carrere has continued to nurture her singing career. In 1993, her first solo album, Dream, was released, and went platinum in the Philippines. That same year, she was featured on the soundtrack of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, performing the ending theme, "I Never Even Told You". Her second album, Hawaiiana, was released in June 2007 and takes Carrere back to her Hawaiian roots with four-time Grammy Award winning record producer Daniel Ho accompanying her on classic solo slack-key guitar and ukulele. The album was nominated for a 2008 Grammy Award under the category Best Hawaiian Music Album.

In 2009, she acted as co-host for the pre-Grammy Awards telecast online event alongside Wayne Brady.^[5]

She won a Grammy Award in 2009 for her third album 'Ikena, which was also produced by Ho, and was a finalist at the 2010 for He Nani, the third album she had recorded with Ho as her producer.

In 2011, she won another Grammy Award (Best Hawaiian Music Album) for her album Huana Ke Aloha.

Carrere married Elie Samaha in 1992;^[3] they divorced in February 2000.^{[citation needed]}

In 1999, she had an affair with then Toronto Maple Leaf Tie Domi who was also married.^[6]

On November 30, 2002, she married again, this time to photojournalist Simon Wakelin. They have a daughter, Bianca, born September 25, 2005. At present, she lives in Los Angeles. On April 2, 2010, Carrere filed for divorce in person at Los Angeles Superior Court. According to court documents she cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce and asked for sole physical custody of their daughter Bianca.^[7] Their divorce was finalized in August 2010, with the two of them reportedly sharing custody of Bianca.^[8]
