Here's to Joan Blondell!
HERE'S TO JOAN BLONDELL! In honor of her August 30th birthday, and in rapt anticipation of her biography (to be released Oct. '07), I've assembled my 20 or so favorite Joan Blondell moments. To keep the tone consistent, I've focused primarily on her black-and-white films from the 1930s (maybe I'll do a color tribute montage next year). It was incredibly tough to decide which clips from her fantastic career to include, and I'll apologize in advance for leaving out your favorite. The montage includes scenes from Three on a Match, Gold Diggers of 1933, Dames, Millie, Blonde Crazy, East Side of Heaven, The Stand-In, Bullets or Ballots, Nightmare Alley, Night Nurse, and Topper Returns. I drew from some only a few seconds of material (Topper Returns), while I went to others more than once (GD33 & Millie). Joan Blondell was so vivacious and had such brilliant comedic timing; it was difficult for her not to steal every scene in which she appeared. In my eyes, she's one of the best!

Joan Blondell - High-spirited gal
This is my tribute to one of the most enchanting celebrities ever, whose heyday took place in the '30s, my most favorite decade when it comes to movies. Joan Blondell (1906 - 1979) was one of those actresses who always lighted up the screens, and not only because of her blonde hair and beautiful big-blue eyes, but also because of her marvelous talent for comedy and drama, as well as her vivacious attitude and huge charisma. It's a pity that she never reached the true stardom she deserved for many reasons. She was truly a hard-working girl and one of the biggest symbols of the Warner Brothers Studios during the Great Depression years. Thank you, dear Joan, for having shared with us your marvelous talent and that gorgeous smile of yours! You were a remarkable lady and your amazing legacy lives on.

Joan Blondell - Violet Hour
A sweet little tribute for the Blonde haired, Blue eyed, Warner Brother-Beauty, Rose Joan Blondell. I absolutely adore her. :D Joan was usually cast as the wisecracking working girl who was the lead's best friend. She made her New York debut with the Ziegfeld Follies and appeared in several Broadway productions. She was starring with James Cagney on Broadway in "Penny Arcade" (1929) when Warner Brothers decided to film the play as Sinners' Holiday (1930). Both Cagney and Joan were given the leads, and the film was a success. She would be teamed with Cagney again in The Public Enemy (1931) and Blonde Crazy (1931) among others. In The Office Wife (1930), she stole the scene when she was dressing for work. While Warner Brothers made Cagney a star, Joan never rose to that level. In the 1930s, she made a career playing gold-diggers and happy-go-lucky girlfriends. She would be paired with Dick Powell in ten musicals during these years, and they were married for ten years. Joan died of Leukemia on Christmas Day in 1979. God's Gift to Women with Louise Brooks, Joan Blondell and Frank Fay (1931)
In this racy scene from 'God's Gift to Women', Frank Fay is joined by all three of his lovers, Louise Brooks, Joan Blondell and Yola D'Avril. This particular scene is probably the best one from this old flick. There are some funny wisecracks and the gals (especially Louise) display some beautiful legs. Fay was drinking heavily at the time of this film, and his star was fading as his wife's, Barbara Stanwyck's, was rising. (Rumor has it that their marriage inspired the film 'A Star is Born'.) I do remember a bright spot in Fay's career, as the cheesy vaudeville emcee in the Carole Lombard/Fredric March screwball classic "Nothing Sacred". Alan Mowbray appears as Fay's valet.
