SAPPHO ~ Venus of Lesbos - Tina Louise ◊ Kerwin Mathews - FULL MOVIE
Make sure to check out my PEPLUM blog. peplums.blogspot.com FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com PEPLUM WEBSITE: www.peplum.ca TWITTER http --------- I've uploaded the entire film without interruptions. I also tried to fix the audio (there was a lot of hissing and pops) and changed the title during the credits from THE WARRIOR EMPRESS to the original Italian title. Enjoy! Sappho ~ The Venus of Lesbos (1960) starring Tina Louise, Kerwin Mathews, Riccardo Garrone and Susy Andersen (credited as Susy Golgi). I love this Peplum. I'm almost addicted to it. When I first saw it, I watched it once a day 4 days in a row. And I'm still hypnotized by it. The film hits all the right Peplum notes. The direction by Pietro Francisci is fun, fast and dreamy. Even if it's a romantic film, it still has lots of sword fights, big battles, ramming ships and, of course, killer lions, all set to a great swirling score. This film has the best named cast of charaters ever: Sappho, Phaon, Hyperbius, Actis (my fav)), Laricus, Melanchrus, etc. All the main actors give excellent performances. Tina Louise is perfect as Sappho, "the world's boldest beauty", as the tagline says. The handsome Kerwin Mathews (who died last year, RIP) gives a thoughtful energetic performance. Kerwin was definitely an overlooked actor. But best of all is Riccardo Garrone as Hyperbius, who almost steals the film from the American actors. Garrone gives a forceful performance that could have easily fallen into caricature but here he's ...

Bettany Hughes Video Journal: Socrates, Sappho, the Aryans and Spartan Girls
( heritage-key.com ) Heritage Key catches up with Bettany Hughes in a London studio as she works on a new documentary about the Aryan civilisation. Talking about some of the exciting excavations taking place out in Siberia, on the Kazakhstan and Russian border, she explains the predicament of heads of states who visit the dig sites, trying to work out whether they want to be associated with the artefacts bearing swastika imagery being uncovered there. Bettany also talks about her recent BBC Radio 4 program on the Greek poet Sappho, and how she articulated the subject of love, and how her poetry speaks to her. She also discusses the significance of Socrates in history, the subject of a book which she has just completed.

Ancient Greek Music: Sappho's Wedding Hymn (Epithalamion)
The song is ΕΠIΘAΛAMIO THΣ ΣAΠΦOYΣ (Epithalamio tis Sapfous), taken from the collection of recreated Greek music made by Petros Tabouris (ΠΕΤΡΟΣ ΤΑΜΠΟΥΡΗΣ): Melos Arheon (MEΛOΣ APXAION) - Vol.1 Secular Music of Greek Antiquity. Oh the roof on high, sing hymnaios, raise up, craftsmen, sing hymnaios. The bridegroom comes just like Ares, a man much bigger than a big man. Sing hymnaios. *** Sappho (Σαπφώ) of Lesbos (Λέσβος), lived in the VII-VI century BC, and was a great lyric poet of Ancient Greece.

Sappho: Poetic Fragments I
Remarkably haunting rendition of DW Myatt's translation. The gentle aura, measured pace transports you to Old Greece and the oracular Mysteries. Sound effects and music (including piano and strings) are subtle, tantalising. The voice, clear, sonorous, beautiful, yearning. Sublimely evocative of female love and unadorned beauty of Sappho's Greek. Composed and performed by Christos Beest, Sister Lianna, and Wulfran Hall. Translated by David Myatt Artwork by Christos Beest Fragment 41 Beautiful girls, towards you My thoughts will never change .... Fragment 1 Deathless Aphrodite -- Daughter of Zeus and maker of snares - On your florid throne, hear me! My lady, do not subdue my heart by anguish and pain But come to me as when before You heard my distant cry, and listened: Leaving, with your golden chariot yoked, your father's house To move beautiful sparrows swift with a whirling of wings As from heaven you came to this dark earth through middle air And so swiftly arrived. Then you my goddess with your immortal lips smiling Would ask what now afflicts me, why again I am calling and what now I with my restive heart Desired: Whom now shall I beguile To bring you to her love? Who now injures you, Sappho? For if she flees, soon shall she chase And, rejecting gifts, soon shall she give. If she does not love you, she shall do so soon Whatsoever is her will. Come to me now to end this consuming pain Bringing what my heart desires to be brought: Be yourself my ally in this fight ...

Fragment 31 I see he who sits near you as an equal of the gods For he can closely listen to your delightful voice And that seductive laugh That makes the heart behind my breasts to tremble. Even when I glimpse you for a moment My tongue is stilled as speech deserts me While a delicate fire is beneath my skin - My eyes cannot see, then, When I hear only a whirling sound As I shivering, sweat Because all of me trembles; I become paler than drought-grass And nearer to death ... But for me, It is that which you desire. To all, it is easy to make this completely understood For Helen -- she who greatly surpassed other mortals in beauty - Left her most noble man and sailed forth to Troy Forgetting her beloved parents and her daughter Because [ the goddess ] led her away .... Which makes me to see again Anactoria now far distant: For I would rather behold her pleasing, graceful movement And the radiant splendour of her face Than your Lydian chariots and foot-soldiers in full armour .... Fragment 22 Gather your [ lyre ] and sing for me [ Soon ] As desire once again [ enhances ] your beauty: Your dress excites, and I rejoice For I once doubted Aphrodite But now have asked that soon You will be with me again .... Greek food and philosophy: Sappho Meze Bar (Greek Restaurant in Clapham, London)
I decided to make this video as I was truly inspired by a recent visit to Sappho Meze Bar on Clapham High Street, SW4. You can like Sappho on Facebook: on.fb.me I think it is the best Greek restaurant in London, and being Greek myself I have tasted it enough to be considered a connoisseur! However Sappho is more than just excellent food, eating there is also an authentic experience, which mixes good atmosphere, heartwarming, healthy food, and... philosophy, as the owner, Louis, will surely share his wisdom with you. Please let us know about your Sappho experience, by commenting below. You can also like Think Tall Films here: on.fb.me A video by Think Tall Films ThinkTallFilms.com Credits Ken Plas, Kostas Jukebox

John Tavener - Sappho
Sappho: Lyrical Fragments, for 2 sopranos & strings (1981) Patricia Rozario, soprano Julia Gooding, soprano The Orchestra of the Academy of Ancient Music Paul Goodwin When John Tavener suffered a stroke in 1980 at the age of 36, his former wife Vicky Maragopoulou flew in from Greece; they had remained close friends even after their marriage ended. She was shocked at his appearance but even more amazed that he wanted to compose. He pressed her in to service, as he was setting some poetry by the Classic Greek poetess Sappho. He intended to write it in Greek, and asked her to be sure he did not betray the Greek language. The poetry Tavener selected includes songs depicting Aphrodite; Sappho's beloved daughter Cleis; and Arthis, the woman Sappho had loved in the past. The cycle is written for two soprano voices, often intertwining (while at other times one of the voices provides a drone note for the other), and a string orchestra. The mood of the piece is soft and gentle. There is no effort to capture the sound of Greece music. [Allmusic.com]
