Faithful Place, Tana French - 9780143119494
The "expertly rendered, gripping new novel" (Janet Maslin, The New York Times)—from the bestselling author of In the Woods and The Likeness. Tana French's In the Woods and The Likeness captivated readers by introducing them to her unique, character-driven style. Her singular skill at creating richly drawn, complex worlds makes her novels not mere whodunits but brilliant and satisfying novels about memory, identity, loss, and what defines us as humans. With Faithful Place, the highly praised third novel about the Dublin Murder squad, French takes readers into the mind of Frank Mackey, the hotheaded mastermind of The Likeness, as he wrestles with his own past and the family, the lover, and the neighborhood he thought he'd left behind for good.

Stroszek - Trailer
available on DVD through www.umbrellaent.com.au Buy it here: www.umbrellaent.com.au Werner Herzog's bleak, brilliant and enigmatic story of a German ex-con (Bruno S.) who attempts to find a new life in America is probably best known as the film Ian Curtis of Joy Division watched the night he committed suicide. This dark, magic realist road movie confirms Herzog's reputation as the consummate poet of doom (Janet Maslin, New York Times). After he is released from a Berlin prison, Stroszek meets a prostitute, Eva, at a bar and offers her a place to stay when two pimps assault her. Following further attacks, the two agree to join Bruno's diminutive old friend, Scheitz (Clemens Scheitz - Heart of Glass, Nosferatu), on a trip to Wisconsin to live with his relatives. The trio hope they will get rich in America. It doesn't happen. Wisconsin is a barren, redneck wilderness and soon their motor home is repossessed and Eva leaves with a truck driver. After a bungled robbery, Bruno is left with a frozen turkey, a gun, and enough money to watch a dancing chicken.

Mary Roach spoke to Googlers in Mountain View on April 22, 2011 about her book Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void. About the book: Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can't walk for a year? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 4000 miles per hour? To answer these questions, space agencies set up all manner of quizzical and startlingly bizarre space simulations -- making it possible to preview space without ever leaving Earth. From the space shuttle training toilet to a crash test of NASA's new space capsule (cadaver filling in for astronaut), Packing for Mars takes us on a surreally entertaining trip into the science of life in space and space on Earth. "Whether she's "Supermanning" around in zero gravity or investigating the challenges of mating in space, her strength as an author is her ability to insert both herself and the reader into the action." — Williamette Week "Her style is at its most substantial - and most hilarious - in the zero-gravity realm that Packing for Mars explores...As startling as it is funny." — Janet Maslin, New York Times Packing for Mars available as a Google eBook: books.google.com

A Siskel & Ebert & Roeper timeline
Created using studio.stupeflix.com This is a look at the careers of Siskel & Ebert & Roeper (Siskel is deceased, RIP him), uploaded while Ebert's current show "Ebert Presents At The Movies" continues to look for its funding sponsors in addition to financial underwriting. Sorry about the appearances of "..." in this video; should have used text to speech here. Speaking of that, I'll remake it with Stupeflix -- with Text-To-Speech. Debunking the "...", here is the information I was trying to give you: "Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert got their start on a low-budget movie-review show on Chicago's PBS affiliate, WTTW. The show was originally titled "Coming Soon to a Theater Near You" and the duo did not use their thumbs in assessing a film's artistic merits. After a contractual dispute, the critics left the series in 1982 to start "At the Movies," owned by the Tribune Co., which also owned the newspaper Siskel wrote for." "Following the departure of Siskel and Ebert, WTTW recruited local New York film critic Jeffrey Lyons and Detroit Free Press critic Neal Gabler to come to Chicago and host the show. After two years, Gabler left following a dispute with the producers. His replacement was film critic Michael Medved (pictured), who went on to co-host with Lyons until the show's cancellation in 1996." "While on the nationally syndicated program, Ebert and Siskel made the "thumbs up / thumbs down" a permanent part of their show. It caught on so well that film advertisements during ...

Alice Schroeder
Bloomberg News columnist and former regulator, CPA and all-star Wall Street analyst Alice Schroeder is the author of The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life, a #1 New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller. The Snowball is a revealing and complete look at the life, wisdom and philosophy of Buffett, from the development of his outlook on the world and the principles he lives by to the business secrets he has never before shared publicly. It was named Amazon's #1 Business and Investing Book of 2008, and Janet Maslin of The New York Times called it a "definitive portrait." Schroeder -- the first analyst to be granted an interview with Buffett and the only analyst with whom he would speak -- went on leave from Morgan Stanley in 2003 to begin researching and writing the book. Recruited for this task by Buffett himself, who values the way she thinks and writes, Schroeder was given unprecedented access -- to his files, family, business associates and massive quantities of his time for interviews and questions. Schroeder began her career as an auditor for Ernst & Young. Before moving to Wall Street as a securities analyst, she worked as a project manager at the Financial Accounting Standards Board, where she drafted some of the most significant accounting rules affecting the insurance industry. Her 54-page report for PaineWebber on Berkshire Hathaway in 1999 was the first comprehensive look at Buffett's company and became a bestseller. She was recruited by ...

The Fiestas - "So Fine" (1958)
Movie Clip - So Fine (1981) September 25, 1981 RYAN O'NEAL STARS IN 'SO FINE,' A COMEDY By JANET MASLIN Published: September 25, 1981 ANDREW BERGMAN, who wrote the witty and inventive screenplay for ''The In Laws,'' makes his directorial debut with ''So Fine,'' another movie about a naive hero who runs afoul of gangster types and finds himself in a farfetched but highly amusing predicament. In this case, the story is that of Bobby Fine (Ryan O'Neal), a fussy, sheltered English professor at a college where the motto is ''Learn So Ye May Know.'' He is kidnapped and taken to New York to help out his father's garment business, where the employees surreptitiously use the dresses for napkins and the dresses come in colors like ''ecru, lemon and gingersnap.'' Business is awful. His father, as played hilariously by Jack Warden, has been reduced to skulking around Bergdorf Goodman trying to sell dresses out of a plastic bag and to romancing what is left of his clientele. Enter Bobby, who is soon romancing Lira, the wife (Mariangela Melato) of his father's terrifying creditor, a gigantic gangster named Mr. Eddie (Richard Kiel), whose every monosyllable is law. A tryst with Lira sends Bobby escaping the jealous husband by dashing home in nothing but Lira's angora sweater, fluffy slippers and tight jeans. The jeans split, and Bobby lines the places where his back pockets used to be with clear plastic, thus starting a hot new fashion trend. Business improves dramatically. The backless ...

Home Less Home (excerpt) by Bill Brand
Home Less Home by Bill Brand 1991, 16mm, color, 75 min In HOME LESS HOME people who are homeless reveal homelessness from their own experiences dispelling common misconceptions and prejudices. Told as a personal journey, the film gives a broad analysis of the causes and conditions of homelessness while it analyzes news, TV reports and historical images of poverty. HOME LESS HOME presents new ways to look at homelessness, displacing the debate from questions of charity to ones of social justice. "Bill Brand's remarkable documentary problems the lifestyles of the homeless population of our city and reveals perhaps the most frightening news of all. Many of those we see outside in cardboard boxes or sleeping bags are not drunks, addicts or lazy, but workers who simply don't earn enough to rent a room in New York." -- The Film Society of Lincoln Center "The testimony of many homeless people would have been a sufficiently urgent basis for any documentary film on this subject. But Mr. Brand goes further, offering a disquisition on the connection between the condition of the homeless and the consequences of studying it as a series of images." -- Janet Maslin, The New York Times Rental: $180.00 16mm Rental: $180.00
