Robert Frost Pequot Library Exhibit
"Good Wishes from Robert Frost" is an exhibit of poetry chapbooks used as Christmas greetings -- a set of 19 loaned to Pequot Library in Southport, CT, by Elinor Wilber, granddaughter of the celebrated American poet Robert Frost. Several have a personal inscription from Frost to Elinor and her husband. What is a chapbook? It is essentially a pocket-sized booklet. The term "chap-book" was formalized by bibliophiles of the 19th century. English "chapmen" were a variety of peddler who circulated printed literature as part of their wares; they set up the equivalent of a modern day pop-up store and their chapbooks were an important medium for the dissemination of popular culture to the common people, especially in rural areas. This format was frequently used for political and religious tracts, folk tales, children's literature, almanacs and... poetry! For twenty-five years, poet Robert Frost collaborated with the Spiral Press and several illustrators to create unique Christmas card "chapbooks" to be sent by the Frost family and by Frost's publishers. The artists involved include Thomas W. Nason, JJ Lankes, Fritz Eichenberg, Leonard Baskin, Philip Grushkin, Howard Norton Cook, Leo Manso, Linn Lloyd Benton, Stefan Martin, Antonio Frasconi and Joseph Low. The Spiral Press was founded by Joseph Blumenthal in 1926. He and Frost became friends during their collaboration on the cards. The exhibit runs from Wednesday, November 28, 2012 through Sunday, January 23, 2013. Pequot Library ...

The Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University
The Jaffe Center for Book Arts revolves around a central gallery, which houses the Jaffe Collection. Exhibitions, gallery talks, films and performances, and our popular Book Arts 101 presentations all take place inside the gallery in the midst of this inspiring collection of artists' books. The Book Arts Studio is our setting for teaching workshops and classes in bookbinding, book structures, paper decoration, and other such topics. It includes comfortable work stations, board shears, and numerous nipping presses, in the company of monumental Leonard Baskin woodcuts. We're pretty confident we have one of the nicest printshops around. The Letterpress Studio is housed in the room that originally held the Jaffe Collection, painted in warm terra cotta with maple floors. Equipment includes a Vandercook 4 proof press, a Potter proof press and a tabletop platen press, all from the twentieth century. A nineteenth century Wesel iron handpress is the central feature in the room. Most of the printing equipment was a gift to us from Brien and Beverly Varnado of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The Letterpress Studio also houses a collection of mid-twentieth century advertising cuts (a gift to us from Lee Kline of Miami) that represents somewhat of a graphic design history of 1950s to 1970s Miami. There is also a growing collection of wood and metal types, and numerous reference books on printing and the book arts. Two wireless Apple iMacs, complete with the latest versions of Adobe ...

Swann Galleries Auction Preview Modern Illustrated Books & Livres d'Artiste Pt 1
The books offered in this auction were acquired by West Coast collector Mel Ritter over several decades. Forty-six of his exemplary livres dartiste formed the basis of an exhibition at The University of Arizona Museum of Art in 2006. Now the entire collection is being sold at Swann. The genre of books designed and illustrated by fine artists took shape in 20th-century France and blossomed into a vibrant art form throughout Europe and beyond. The modern masters of art featured in this sale include Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Henry Moore, and Pablo Picasso. The publishers who championed their work and produced some of the most exquisite livres in the collection include Maeght, Gallimard, Tériade, and Louis Broder, among others. Modern and contemporary variations of the artist-illustrated book are well represented with works by Patrick Caulfield, Jim Dine, David Hockney, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Carlos Mérida, Robert Motherwell, and Antoni Tápies. Surrealists like Enrico Baj, Jose Luis Cuevas, Max Ernst, and Roberto Matta appear throughout the catalogue, as do American artists like Leonard Baskin, Fritz Scholder, Ben Shahn, and Bernard Solomon. Beyond traditional livres dartiste there are fine publications by such distinctly American presses as Arion, Brighton, Gehenna, Cheloniidae, Pennyroyal, and the popular Limited Editions Club. Ritters sense of humor and love of whimsical constructions and bindings can be seen in works by ...

Patanga (1949) O Dilwaloh Dil Ka Laganah Acha Hai , Par Kabhi Kabhi !
American Constitution. In the summer of 1787, some 55 delegates met in convention in the State House in Philadelphia and devised a new national government, then loosely allied in a "league of friendship" under the Articles of Confederation. The delegates sat almost daily for for four months and argued out their ideas in long, often heated sessions behind closed doors. In midSeptember they gave to their countrymen the final document, four pages of parchment setting forth a plan of union calculated "to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity." This document was the Federal Constitution. It provided for a sovereign government with clearly defined powers and responsibilities. In spare, eloquent language, the delegates created a central government with authority in national affairs while reserving local affairs to the States. They steered between the equal dangers of tyranny and ineffectualness with a system of checks and balances: a two-house legislature, one representing the people at large and the other the States; an executive branch with a single head; an independent judiciary; strict limitations on powers granted; a provision for amendments; and the vesting of sovereignty in the people themselves and not in offices and institutions. That delegates of widely diverse interests could unite on such a system was, for George Washington, "little short of a miracle." His story draws on long study of the Nation's constitutional origins to take us to the ...

"Yesterday" by WS Merwin (poetry reading)
"Yesterday" is a word more often used in a figurative rather than a literal sense. My three-year-old daughter avoids ambiguity with her own word "lasterday" which means any day from the past. There are few things that we cherish more than the neologisms of our children, their comic misapprehensions and their astonishing insights. My son when three years old came in from playing outside and said " Hey Dad, there's a great big catalogue in the garage" I thought maybe the postman had left it and said, "I wonder what that's doing there". " Climbing up the wall", he said. My daughter said that she had been given a "smack" at the nursery. Her mother was relieved when the "smack" turned out to be milk, a banana and a biscuit. I'm old enough to see the story from the father's point of view. There is a branch of psychology called Transactional Analysis. You can get the gist of it here - scroll down to the Parent-Adult-Child, PAC, model: en.wikipedia.org Parents of teenage children are often too immature to learn their place in the scheme of things. Unless they're willing to learn self-discipline, to keep their mouths shut and to understand that they're not the most important people in the world, then they will lose the ability to communicate with their kids in their early teens. Parents who practice self-discipline can stay on good terms with their kids throught their teenage years. Parents who are willing to grow up stand a good chance of forming an adult relationship with their ...

GSA Design Excellence: Architecture and Democracy
gsa.gov The Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture, written by Daniel Patrick Moynihan, is the ostensible mission statement of the US General Services Administration's Public Buildings Service. Marking the 40th anniversary of the guiding principles, "Architecture and Democracy" features Senator Moynihan and leading design practitioners describing the origins of the guiding principles. They also examine the dramatic improvements to federal design that followed the guiding principles' release, with a special focus on GSA's Design Excellence Program. Narrated by Tim Russert.
