Doyle is a surname of Irish origin. The name is a Anglicisation of the Irish Ó Dubhghaill, meaning "descendant of Dubhghall". The personal name Dubhghall contains the elements dubh "black" + gall "stranger".^[1] Similar Scottish and Irish surnames, derived from the same personal name are: MacDougall / McDougall and MacDowell / McDowell.^[1]

During the Viking Age the term Dubhghoill was used to describe the Vikings—usually Danes—and the term Fionnghoill ("fair foreigners") was used to describe Norwegians.^[2] It is commonly held that these terms were used to distinguish the darker-haired Danes from fair-haired Norwegians.^[1] Later, Fionnghall was used to describe Scottish Gaels from the Hebrides, and sometimes the Hiberno-Normans (or "Old English"). The most common term for the Hiberno-Normans was Seanghoill ("old foreigners") to difference themselves from the Dubhghoill the "new foreigners" or "dark foreigners" who came to Ireland during Tudor conquest of Ireland.^[2]

The name Doyle is not found in any of the old genealogies, like other prominent Irish families. This has led many to maintain that the Doyles are of somewhat recent origin in Ireland. Doyle is one of the 20 most common surnames in Ireland. In consequence it is thought that there may be several different specific origins for the name. Doyles found in Ulster may be of Scottish descent, as the name was used for MacDowell. In the 20th century the principal locations for the surname were in Dublin, Wexford, Wicklow, Carlow, Kerry and Cork.^[3]

Doyle Dykes (born May 23, 1954) is an American country acoustic guitarist from Jacksonville, Florida. He is influenced by a wide variety of musical styles and musicians such as Chet Atkins, the Allman Brothers, to the Beatles and U2. Cited along with guitarists such as Tommy Emmanuel as one of the best finger-style guitarists in the world,^[1][2] he is also known for his capability of playing proficiently with a wide range of different guitar tunings. Some of his best-known works and interpretations are "Wabash Canonball", "Country Fried Pickin", "Tricky Pickin", "Chet Stuff", "Be Still", "Amazing Grace" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Dykes is a devout Baptist and has served as a minister in a small church in Florida;^[3] the influence of Christianity is present in much of his work. He is a major endorser of Taylor Guitars and Rivera Sedona amplifiers, with his own signature models of each.

Biography[link]

Dykes grew up in Jacksonville, Florida in a Christian community. His father is referred to as "Bubba Dykes" and he has a brother named Aubrey.^[4] He cites June 1965 during his church's "summer revival" as the moment he became a lifelong Christian as an 11 year-old boy, seeing "the lights of salvation and a new purpose and desire for my life and since that day, I've never been the same".^[4] His first guitar was a $30 Sears Roebuck Silvertone acoustic.^[5] Dykes claims a sailor named Barry Lackey was the most important influence in his development as a guitarist. Lackey attended his church one day and using a thumb pick from his pocket "completely blew him away" with his "spider picking", playing just like Chet Atkins and Merle Travis, Doyle's heroes.^[6] Lackey was then invited to his house one day and showed him a right-hand picking pattern that "got his fingers working together in the right way, where the thumb played the bass and after-beat rhythm, and the three fingers took care of the rest."^[6] He later reunited with Lackey at a Taylor Guitars event in Detroit in 2002, and claims that if it wasn't for him he'd never have become a successful guitarist.^[6]

Dykes' early years as a guitarist took him around the world as he toured with The Stamps Quartet and later with Grand Ole Opry star Grandpa Jones. Dykes has since returned to the Grand Ole Opry for numerous performances. Although a world-renowned guitarist, Dykes frequently still plays church venues with small audiences, stating, “I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to play music for people.^[2]

Dykes is a long-time endorser of Taylor Guitars. According to owner Bob Taylor, "If I had to pick the artist who most represented the Taylor Guitars brand and who has done the most for us, I would say Doyle Dykes. Doyle has represented Taylor Guitars to more players for more years than anyone."^[7] The Doyle Dykes Signature Model Taylor guitar (“DDSM”) features an amplification system by L.R. Baggs.

On December 23, 2004, Dykes had an operation on a brain tumor in which the surgeon compressed his brain. The operation left him with a temporary loss of balance (meaning he had to learn to walk again) and suffered from extreme headaches and nausea for several years afterwards and ultimately left him deaf in his right ear.^[8] He and his wife, Rita, a childhood sweetheart, have been married for at least 37 years and have four children, including daughters named Heidi and Hayley and a son named Caleb, also an accomplished guitarist. He has resided for many years in the Nashville area and is a close friend of Duane Eddy. Dykes is an avid collector of old Western movies, including the films of John Wayne, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Steve McQueen.^[9] In 2011 he released a book The Lights of Marfa, a semi-autobiographical book documenting his encounters with God, with numerous Christian references to events in his own life.

Patrick Doyle (born 6 April 1953, South Lanarkshire, Scotland) is a classically trained composer. A longtime collaborator of actor/director Kenneth Branagh, Doyle is known for his work scoring such critically acclaimed films as Henry V (1989), Sense and Sensibility (1995), Hamlet (1996), and Gosford Park (2001), as well as such noteworthy blockbusters as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Eragon (2006), Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Thor (both 2011). Life and career[link]

Doyle was born on 6 April 1953 in Scotland and graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama in 1975. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama in 2001. He joined the Renaissance Theatre Company in 1987 as composer and musical director creating scores for highly successful productions of such plays as Hamlet, As You Like It, and Look Back in Anger.^[1] Doyle's film score debut occurred in 1989 when actor/director Kenneth Branagh commissioned Doyle to compose a score for the Renaissance Film's production of Henry V. The song "Non Nobis, Domine" from the film was subsequently awarded the 1989 Ivor Novello Award for Best Film Theme.^[2] He has since scored nine Kenneth Branagh films including Dead Again (1991), Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), Hamlet (1996), Love's Labour's Lost (2000), As You Like It (2006), Sleuth (2007), and Thor (2011).

In October 1997, shortly after scoring Great Expectations, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Doyle was diagnosed with leukemia. He managed to complete his score for the animated fantasy Quest for Camelot (1998) in hospital whilst undergoing treatment. Doyle made a full recovery.^[3][4]

In 1998 Patrick Doyle’s Music from the Movies concert, sponsored by Leukaemia Research UK was staged at the Royal Albert Hall. It was directed by Kenneth Branagh and starred a host of international stars including Emma Thompson, Sir Derek Jacobi, Dame Judi Dench, Alan Rickman, Imelda Staunton, Richard E. Grant, Adrian Lester, and Robbie Coltrane.^[5]

He has composed a series of classical works outside of films that include "The Thistle and the Rose", commissioned in 1990 by Prince Charles in honor of the 90th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (the mother of the current Queen Elizabeth II); the violin romance "Corarsik", written for Emma Thompson's birthday; the album "Impressions of America: A Suite for Orchestra"; and the symphonic tone poem "Tam O Shanter", commissioned by the Scottish Schools Orchestra Trust.

Doyle has recently completed the scores for Marvel Studios Thor (2011) and the 20th Century Fox film Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011). He is currently working on the upcoming Pixar film Brave (2012), directed by Mark Andrews, after which he will be working on the Sovereign Films film Effie directed by Richard Laxton.

Kevin Edward Doyle (born 18 September 1983) is an Irish international footballer who plays as a forward for Football League Championship club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He played for St Patrick's Athletic, and Cork City in his homeland before he moved to English side Reading. He was part of Reading's record-breaking promotion to the Premier League in 2006. In June 2009, he moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers for a then-club record £6.5 million.

Doyle is a Republic of Ireland international, having made his debut in 2006. He has scored 10 goals in 46 appearances for Ireland.

Early career[link]

Doyle signed for his first professional club St Patrick's Athletic in September 2001 on a free agent. Doyle initially played for the club's under 18 side but within months had made his League of Ireland début.

Cork City[link]

He then had a successful spell with Cork City, who he joined in February 2003, linking up with his former St. Patrick's Athletic manager Pat Dolan, who had recently taken over at Turner's Cross. Doyle scored 25 goals for Cork City where he began playing on the right-wing but soon reverted to his natural position of striker. He also scored two goals from six appearances in the 2004 UEFA Intertoto Cup, including the winner against Dutch side NEC Nijmegen.^[2][3]

Reading[link]

On 7 June 2005, Doyle signed for Reading on a two year deal from Cork City, Ireland ^[4] for €117,000^[5] (about £78,000).^[6] Despite having left Cork City, Doyle received a championship medal when they won the League of Ireland Premier Division in November 2005. Originally, he was signed as a back-up, but an injury to Dave Kitson gave him an opportunity in the first team which he retained thanks to a number of important goals along the way. He scored 19 in total including the equalising goal at Leicester City on the day the Royals were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history, 25 March 2006. He became an intrinsic part of Reading's Championship-winning 2005–06 squad, and according to the Actim Index was the top player in the Championship.^[7] He was named the official Reading F.C. player of the season for 2005–06.^[8] In April 2006, he was also named as Championship Fans' Player Of The Year^[9] and one of the Championship Team of the Year^[10] by the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA).

Doyle played an important role for Reading in the 2006–07 Premier League season. His first Premiership goal came in the Royals 2–1 defeat at Aston Villa, when he headed Reading in to a third-minute lead. Doyle began to show a great threat in the air, during the year 2007 he scored more headers than any other player in England's leagues.He was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year but lost out to Cesc Fàbregas. He finished the season with 13 Premier League goals after being curtailed with a torn hamstring for two months. Reading were relegated in the 2007–08 season, but they decided to hold onto Doyle and many of their top players.

On 1 September 2008, he was linked with a move to Aston Villa but in the end the striker remained at Reading.

Doyle remained at Reading to try to help them return to the top flight in the 2008–09 season. He scored 18 league goals but the club failed to achieve promotion after finishing fourth and losing in the play-offs to Burnley.

Wolverhampton Wanderers[link]

Doyle joined newly promoted Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers on 30 June 2009 when he signed a four-year contract for a club record fee, reportedly £6.5 million.^[11][12] However, he immediately had to undergo an operation to remove a hernia, which hindered his first pre-season at his new club.^[13] He picked up another minor injury while on international duty with Ireland that caused him to miss the start of the league season. He finally made his debut for Wolves on 22 August 2009, as a half time substitute at Manchester City.^[14]

He scored his first Wolves goal on 20 September 2009 to earn a 2–1 win over Fulham.^[15] Throughout much of the season he operated as a lone striker in a 4–5–1 formation. His contribution helped the club finish 15th in their first season in the Premier League.^[16] He also won the club's Player’s Player of the Season Award and their Top Goalscorer Award after reaching nine goals.^[17]

Doyle continued to play the lone striker role throughout most of the 2010–11 season, despite the arrival of Steven Fletcher who equalled Doyle's club record fee. After Mick McCarthy rotated systems using various strikers, he eventually reverted to his previously successful 4–5–1 formation, with Doyle playing the lone front man role. He went on to score five goals for Wolves in the second half of the season - including the winner against Manchester United that halted their 29 match unbeaten run.^[18] On 26 March 2011, Doyle tore a knee ligament while on international duty with Ireland, which kept him out of action for up to 6 weeks.^[19] He returned to action on 14 May against Sunderland, coming on as a substitute,^[20] but played no part in their final game in which they narrowly escaped relegation.

He is contracted to Wolves until summer 2015.^[21]

Doyle has played for the Republic of Ireland U21 team, making his debut on 2 February 2004 against Portugal. With 11 caps, and scoring six goals making him joint top scorer at that grade, he was also a member of the Irish FIFA World Youth Championship squad in 2003.^[22] Scored against Colombia ^[23]

He was called up to the senior Republic of Ireland squad in October 2005,^[24] making his full international debut against Sweden at Lansdowne Road on 1 March 2006.^[25] His first start in a competitive international was against Germany on 2 September 2006 in a Euro 2008 qualifier.^[26] With this appearance, his family also won a €100 bet at 100/1 they had placed two years earlier on Doyle playing competitively for Ireland.^[27]

Doyle scored his first goal for Ireland against San Marino in November 2006.^[28] He was then named the official Football Association of Ireland Young Player of 2006 on 4 February 2007, also receiving a nomination for the senior award.^[29]

His second goal came in a 1–0 victory over Slovakia at Croke Park in March 2007.^[30] He also scored against Ecuador on 23 May 2007 securing a valiant 1–1 draw against the South Americans,^[31] and he scored his best goal for Ireland, with a long-range left-foot shot into the top corner to the keeper's right, in a 2–2 draw against Slovakia on 9 September 2007 in the 2008 European Championships qualifying game in Bratislava.^[32] His fifth international goal and fourth in the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign came away to Wales as Ireland drew 2–2.

During 2010 World Cup qualifying, Doyle established himself as Robbie Keane's ideal strike partner in the national team's attacking quartet that included Damien Duff and Aiden McGeady.^[33] He played in 8 of the 10 games, scoring two goals, including the first in a 2–1 win in the opening game against Georgia. He also scored against Cyprus, his seventh international goal, in a 2–1 win in Nicosia. In the absence of Robbie Keane, Shay Given and other players who had been allowed to return to their clubs, Doyle captained Ireland for the first time in a friendly against South Africa on the 8 September 2009.^[34]

Doyle has been nominated as the Football Association of Ireland Player of the Year for 2007 and won the award in 2009,^[35][36] as well as for Goal of the Year for his goal against Slovakia in September 2007.^[35] Doyle scored his ninth international goal, and first in 2012 European Championships qualification, against Andorra at the Aviva Stadium on 7 September 2010. On 6 February 2011, Doyle was named Republic Of Ireland Player of the Year for 2010, while he also earned the Goal of the Year award for Ireland, for his superb strike in last September's Euro 2012 qualifier against Andorra.^[37]

Doyle was sent off against Armenia on 11 October 2011.^[38]
