It is in the northeast part of Hunan and is financially, the second strongest city in Hunan. This means it is clean and more modern than dirty old Yiyang!! I drove my friends' car. She is a fellow teacher and let me borrow it. My friends' dad is a police officer and he checked at the station and I can use my American License to drive. He is working on how to get me a Chinese License, though!! It is very different driving in China. The person in the front has the right away- this means if I pull out in front of you while you are going 60mph, I have the right away. They are crazy. When you have a generation of new drivers,this is what you get. Most of the drivers are the first person in their family to own a car. They just learn by trial and error... they have very underdeveloped car culture! So, Yueyang was very pretty. We got to see DongTing Lake. The second biggest lake in China. We also experienced the fun nightlife. We stayed with our friend David who teaches at a high-school. Check out the pictures... Yueyang (; Postal map spelling: Yochow) is a prefecture-level city in the Hunan province of China, on the shores of Dongting Lake.
The Yueyang metropolitan area occupies . and the city proper occupies . The population is 5,453,900 in 2008.
The city's most famous attraction is the Yueyang Tower (岳阳楼 Yuèyánglóu).
City flower: Gardenia. It is twinned with Numazu, Japan and Castlegar, British Columbia, Canada.
Administration
The Yueyang metropolitan area is made up of six outlying districts, two special districts and the city proper. The six city districts are Huarong, Linxiang, Xiangyin, Pingjiang, Miluo and Yueyang. The two special (smaller) districts are Junshan and Yunxi, which used to be part of Yueyang city proper but were separated into their own special districts for administrative purposes.
History
The area now called Yueyang has been inhabited for over 3,000 years. It was originally established as a prefecture called Hanchang in 210 AD during the Three Kingdoms period.Under the Song Dynasty (AD 960-AD 1279) it was heavily fortified, with walls in circumference, and became the seat of the military prefecture of Yueyang, whence its present name. During the Taiping Rebellion, its capture by the rebels in AD 1852 was an important stage in their advance up the Yangtze River valley to Nanjing. At the time of the foundation of the Republic of China in AD 1911, it became a county, taking the name Yueyang.
