Introduction

The medical term “cardiac output” refers to the volume of blood ejected from the heart with each heartbeat. Another term frequently used to denote this amount is “ejection fraction.”

Cardiac Anatomy

The human heart consists of four chambers, easily envisioned as a box divided into four cubes. The bottom boxes are the heart’s ventricles, also referred to as the right and left. The ventricles send blood away from the heart, either to the lungs for oxygenation or to the body to bring oxygen and nutrients to the body’s tissues.

The Right Cardiac Valves

Valves separate the atria from the ventricles and each ventricle from the artery that it feeds. Blood returning from the body and depleted of oxygen enters the right atrium, and goes through the tricuspid valve to the right ventricle. With each heartbeat, the blood then exists the right ventricle through the pulmonic valve and journeys to the lungs to exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen.

The Left Cardiac Valves

After blood has been reoxygenated in the lungs, it returns to the left atrium of the heart. It is pushed through the mitral valve into the heart’s large and muscular left ventricle. With each heartbeat, blood is then ejected through the aortic valve out to the body’s tissues through the aortic artery. It is this volume of blood referred to as cardiac output or the ejection fraction.

Low Cardiac Output Causes

Low CO’s or inadequate ejection fractions can result from weak heartbeats caused by a heart attack or valves that fail to open or close properly, low blood pressure, low blood volume or some imbalances in the body’s electrolyte balance.

Low Ejection Fraction Symptoms

The symptoms of an inadequate CO or a low ejection fraction are essentially signs of heart failure. Thus, any of the symptoms associated with congestive heart failure can be considered those of a low ejection fraction. One significant symptom of a low ejection fraction includes “rales” or the sound of moisture backing up into the lungs. Other signs of inadequate oxygenation include a bluish tint to the lips, other mucous membranes or nail beds. Fatigue, shortness of breath or dyspnea (difficulty breathing) are also common. Finally, advanced hypoxia can results in confusion, sedation or coma.
