Sir Terry Leahy, Every Little Helps: Tesco's CEO talks business
If you're interested in business Sir Terry Leahy needs little introduction. Under his leadership Tesco's turnover has quadrupled from £16 billion to an anticipated £64 billion, profits have increased by six times from around £532 million when he started to an estimated £3.2 billion this year (2010), and earnings per share have increased by more than three and a half times. So what makes Sir Terry tick? One thousand people poured into the Odeon Leicester Square for this London Business Forum event to find out. Leahy is widely regarded as a low key leader but it is clear that he eats, sleeps, lives and breathes Tesco, which he joined after graduating from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in 1977. Sir Terry Leahy, The Cambridge Union Society
Date recorded: 04/05/2011 Every little helps: the role of big business in society' Sir Terry Leahy is a former CEO of Tesco, the largest chain of supermarkets in Britain, and the second most profitable retailer in the world. Leahy joined Tesco in 1979 and completely overhauled its marketing strategy, enjoying huge success with schemes such as the Tesco Clubcard which he devised and implemented. He became Cheif Executive in 1997 aged just 41, and significantly increased its lead as the biggest retailer in the UK. Although now one of the UK's most successful businessmen, and winner of a large number of retail awards, Leahy is a former shelf-stacker himself; during his time as CEO he visited a branch of Tesco at least once a week, staying close to the roots of the company. This event was organized in association with Beyond Profit

Terry Leahy: my plan to boost UK
Arguably Tesco's finest boss suggests his six point plan to get the economy back on track. Sir Terry Leahy made his name at Tesco, first by introducing the Clubcard loyalty programme, which underpinned many of the firm's innovations. He also served as Chief Executive from 1997 to 2011, when the company moved enjoyed impressive growth to make it Britain's largest grocer. Sir Terry Leahy - What can governments learn from successful businesses? | 17.10.2012
A brief write up at this event is available at: www.policyexchange.org.uk In a time of economic austerity the government is under pressure to streamline its operations and deliver better public services for less money. As part of these reforms, some commentators have suggested that Whitehall needs to replace career civil servants with a greater number of specialists from the private sector. Others have suggested that governments need to attract more business leaders to take responsibility for departments or that government should make better use of the huge amounts of public data it holds to deliver more personalised services to people. We are delighted to welcome Sir Terry Leahy, former CEO of Tesco plc, to talk about his experience running the largest supermarket chain in the UK and whether he believes there are lessons that government could learn from successful businesses. In his new book, Management in 10 Words, Sir Terry pinpoints the ten vital attributes that make successful managers and underlie great organisations. His book examines a number of themes including why initial failure often leads to ultimate success and why competition should always be welcomed. This event will ask whether the public sector could learn valuable lessons from private companies to improve the way it functions.
