Chinese Jade
Chinese Jade
Chinese Jade Culture see more pics at www.chinese-souvenir.com Jade (Yu in Chinese pinyin) was defined as beautiful stones by Xu Zhen (about 58-147) in Shuo Wen Jie Zi, the first Chinese dictionary. Jade is generally classified into soft jade (nephrite) and hard jade (jadeite). Since China only had the soft jade until jadeite was imported from Burma during the Qing dynasty (1271-1368), jade traditionally refers to the soft jade so it is also called traditional jade. Jadeite is called Feicui in Chinese. Feicui is now more popular and valuable than the soft jade in China. The history of jade is as long as the Chinese civilization. Archaeologists have found jade objects from the early Neolithic period (about 5000 BC), represented by the Hemudu culture in Zhejian Province, and from the middle and late Neolithic period, represented by the Hongshan culture along the Lao River, the Longshan culture along the Yellow River, and the Liangzhu culture in the Tai Lake region. Jade has been ever more popular till today. The Chinese love jade because of not only its beauty, but also more importantly its culture, meaning and humanity, as Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC) said there are 11 De (virtue) in jade. The following is the translation (don't know the translator) 'The wise have likened jade to virtue. For them, its polish and brilliancy represent the whole of purity; its perfect compactness and extreme hardness represent the sureness of intelligence; its angles, which do not cut ...

Making Black Pottery
Making Black Pottery
Black pottery gets the smooth ebony finish from its special firing process. The fuel is mixed with pigment; and the clay absorbs the color from the smoke during the firing. Traditionally, all the engravings are carved before the firing. Our artisans have also invented a new method that engraves designs on the surface after the item is fired. The color gets lighter as the artist etches deeper. So the final coloring has levels of yellow and gray, as well as black. Black pottery originated during the Neolithic period (12000 BC) in China; and this method was perfected by the Long Shan Culture (3000 BC) The earliest works of Black Pottery are water pots and vessels of ancient worship. Then it became the house-hold wares for daily life of the royal families.

Longshan Temple in Taipei
Longshan Temple in Taipei
Visit my Channel youtube.com Have you ever been to an authentic Buddhist Temple in Asia? They're everywhere, of course, but when I entered the huge gates and stepped inside the Longshan Temple, I was blown away! It was like nothing I have ever seen before. Usually temples are quiet and remotely located, but this one, being right in the heart of downtown Taipei, we filled with all kinds of activities, noise, smoke and chanting. The first thing to greet you are charming waterfalls and serene ponds with large goldfish and plants. Very nice! Then, once you walk into the temple itself, your hit with a wall of incense, activity, and chanting from perhaps hundreds of worshippers. They were reading from books, offering gifts of flowers and food, even seeking guidance by tossing little runes (if you know the name of those things, please comment) and receiving a Yes, No, or Try Again. I took the opportunity to buy some incense and offer it to the Buddha. Burnt my fingers but well worth the pain. You'll see all of this in my movie, so watch, enjoy, and please leave a comment!

(HD) China Trip Slideshow Pt. 3/9 (凤凰Fenghuang, Mengdong River, Longshan County)
We headed out at night to see Fenghuang's marquee local cultural show. It was a great performance, with a bit of everything. The lights and atmosphere was excellent, and I really felt like a part of the show. After heading back towards the riverside town, we explored the night a bit, before heading off to bed early after a long day. On day 2, we continued to explore the town, and the nightlife. The next day, we headed out to Longshan County to go rafting along the Mengdong River. The rafting was fun and full of (quite intense!) water fights between rafts. The waters were both calm and rough at different times (no filming or pictures during the ride), and there were great sights and scenery along the entire ride, as well as on the ride back to Jishou for the night.

Lukang's historical sites make this little town a favorite for cultural and artistic travelers. This is Longshan Temple, which is over 360 years old. While some come to pray for good health and fortune, many are also here for some architectural appreciation. Zheng Wu-lang, Changhua Travel Expert: This is a Northern Sung style building. The stone sculptures are quite splendid. There are carvings that are to bring you fortune. There's a crab holding a pen to help you do well in academic endeavors. The most distinguishing feature of this temple is the stage, the weight is evenly dispersed and there isn't a single nail in this structure. Michella Jade Weng, Presenter: In addition to Longshan Temple, there many more historical buildings in Lukang. Would you like to have coffee in one of them? Follow me. This used to be the home of a wealthy family surnamed "Ding." A member of the family was once a presented scholar in the imperial examinations. Though the historical home is quite exquisite, the family no longer lives here, but it is open to visitors to have a look, or to sit down and have some afternoon tea. Around the lantern festival, while most Taiwanese people will eat boiled glutinous rice balls, residents of Lukang take steamed glutinous rice balls stuffed with the likes of sweet red bean paste, sesame or peanut powder. This is made with rice, from rice milk. Shape your thumb and index finger into a C, then it won't fall out. Then you put it on a leaf. It makes it much ...

Longshan Temple - Taiwan Series (2 of 4)
This is my video from Longshan temple in Taipei. If you are interested in cultural sights I highly recommend that you visit this Temple. It has a long history of around 300 years and was built by Fujian Immigrants from China. It has been rebuilt many times due to the frequent Earthquakes which have plagued Taiwanese history, though the last time it was destroyed was due to a rogue American bomb during WW2, so its current form is around 70-75 years old. Its part Buddhist and part Taoist in nature, which is really quite interesting. The music featured in this video is Shanghai Sunset from Pandasia by Dom the Bear. (Taiwan) Longshan Temple
(Taiwan) Longshan Temple
It was built in 1738 by settlers from Fujian, China. It served as a place of worship and a gathering place for the Chinese settlers. The temple has been destroyed either in full or in part on numerous earthquakes and fires. In the spring of 1945, it was even hit by American bombers who claimed the Japanese were hiding armaments inside. Taipei residents have nevertheless consistently rebuilt and renovated it, and did so again after the close of the Second World War a few months later. Longshan is seen as an emblematic example of Taiwanese classical architecture. Like most temples in Taiwan, the Temple worships a mixture of Buddhist, Taoist, and folk deities such as Matsu.

Get the word out on this video. - Monday May 16 2011 7:10 am en.wikipedia.org China has been the source of many significant inventions, including the Four Great Inventions of ancient China: papermaking, the compass, gunpowder, and printing (both woodblock and movable type). The list below contains these and other inventions. The Chinese invented technologies involving mechanics, hydraulics, and mathematics applied to horology, metallurgy, astronomy, agriculture, engineering, music theory, craftsmanship, nautics, and warfare. By the Warring States Period (403--221 BC), they had advanced metallurgic technology, including the blast furnace and cupola furnace, while the finery forge and puddling process were known by the Han Dynasty (202 BC -- AD 220). A sophisticated economic system in China gave birth to inventions such as paper money during the Song Dynasty (960--1279). The invention of gunpowder by the 10th century led to an array of inventions such as the fire lance, land mine, naval mine, hand cannon, exploding cannonballs, multistage rocket, and rocket bombs with aerodynamic wings and explosive payloads. With the navigational aid of the 11th-century compass and ability to steer at high sea with the 1st-century sternpost rudder, premodern Chinese sailors sailed as far as East Africa and Egypt. The Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance International Art Exhibit opened for public viewing at Longshan Temple in Taiwans Lugang Township on Sunday. Visitors are commenting positively on the exhibit, which includes over 40 realism paintings. Zhou Yixiu is an artist whose works feature in the exhibition. She says that each painting has a moving story behind it. [Zhou Yixiu, Artist]: "When my students saw this painting, they asked me whether it was a photograph or a painting. After they found out it was a painting they expressed great admiration. It is really a good painting, much more than a photograph. The spirit of this piece is more emotionally stirring than a photo could be." Local officials have welcomed and helped to promote the exhibit, which they say is beneficial for people to see. [Chen Yunyong, Chenghua County Cultural Bureau]: "[The exhibit] is good for people's faith. We all think it is worth promoting or advertising. Everyone has come to this world from the heavens and our time here on earth is limited. If we can create or do something meaningful during our short time here in the world then that is a great thing.
