The Salt Range Hills, Pakistan
I travelled along this road many times as a teenager, I almost always used to get churning stomach along it's steep and winding sections and sometime I also threw up. This time I sailed through without any problem, though! The Salt Range Located between the Indus and Jhelum rivers in northern Punjab, this is one of several well known mountain ranges in Pakistan. Consisting of two rows of low-lying rugged hills, it is approximately 300 km long with width varying between 8 to 30 km. Mount Sakesar, its highest mountain, has a height of 1522 m, a far cry from that of K2 in the Karakoram range that rises to 8611m above sea level. Nevertheless this range is important in its own right. It's hills contain large salt deposits - hence the name Salt Range - as well as coal, gypsum, and other minerals. The salt deposits are thought to originate from an ancient sea that evaporated 600 million years ago, it extended over the territory which eventually formed the mountains. Like the famous Himalayas, the Salt Range was also formed as a result of collision between Indo-Australian and the Eurasian plates, the collision began 70 million years ago. This range is geologically important too, its rocks have most complete record of earth's history from as early as 540 million (Precambrian, meaning life hidden) up to 11500 (Pleistocene Epoch) years ago.

Kalar Kahar, Pakistan
This video was made during my brief stop on a hillside overlooking Kalar Kahar (Kallar Kahar) to enjoy breathtaking view of the town before joining M2 motorway. I was short on time so did not get chance to explore the places where I used to stop for short rests and refreshments during my summer vacation journeys through this idyllic location. I have many memories from that time, mostly pleasant. Leaving this beautiful place, on my return journey home, was often quite depressing. After crossing the Salt Range mountains and reaching Katha Sugral was like coming down to earth in more ways than one, it marked the end of my long summer school vacation and hence the good time that I had thought would last forever. Consisting of two rows of low-lying rugged hills, it is approximately 300 km long with width varying between 8 to 30 km. M2 Motorway in Pakistan (drive from Lahore to Chakwal)
M2 Motorway in Pakistan. Drive from Lahore to Chakwal. Suzuki van single trip Rs. 400,- Space in the van for 7 passengers, the driver excluded. Wonderful trip, it was raining when we reached Salt Range in the Pothwar region. I have used Pothwari music because i thought it suits the atmosphere. Whenever i am on M2 Motorway i feel as if its not part of Pakistan, i feel as if i am in the West. Compared to GT road M2 Motorway is less crowded not much traffic and kinda boring but if you love the scenery then its a bliss.

3 Gliders Racing Salt River Range in 2011 Nationals Championship
The full 42 minute version of 3 gliders racing each other over Wyoming's amazing Salt River mountain range during the 2011 15-meter national gliding contest. The glider taking the video is an ASW-20B piloted by Bruno Vassel IV. The glider shown at the start of this video is John Cochrane (BB) flying an ASW-27B and the second glider in the middle of the video is Tim Taylor (TT) flying a Ventus 2a. All gliders were fully ballasted. My 20B was 1157 pounds and had a wing loading of 10.3 pounds. Hope you enjoy! Bruno

Gliding Salt River Range - 47 Min Raw Footage
July 14, 2011 Practice day for 15 meter Nationals glider contest with a dozen gliders flying from Logan northeast to north of Palisades Reservoir and down south to Afton Wyoming. This video shows raw footage (shot using a Contour+ video camera) of pilot Bruno Vassel IV flying B4, an ASW-20B over some spectacular scenery. The first part shows the Palisades res and mountains just south of the Grand Tetons. The next part shows the ridge run south to Afton getting pretty low in the process. The last part is just spectacular showing ridge soaring the high parts of the Salt River Mountains range just east of Afton Wyoming. I debated cutting up this video and editing it into something smaller but thought it would be interesting to keep as a whole for when you are bored on a long winter's weekend and feel like watching some extended gliding. Enjoy! Much more to come in some of my other videos taken from the contest. Bruno

Kallar Kahar Lake Pakistan
Kallar Kahar lake is situated in a beautiful valley in the southern mountainous area of potohar plateau in the salt range. It is located at an altitude of about 1500 ft from sea level. It is a natural lake which is fed by a natural fresh water spring at the base of hills. This spring water fills the lake up to a level and then overflows and makes a stream towards the north. The lake is not deep, so a lot of natural vegetation can be seen all around it and even in the middle. It is a natural breeding sanctuary for many birds, so it is an ideal place for bird watching. Some migratory birds can also be seen in particular season. Wild peacocks can be seen wandering around the area. Now and then their particular sound can be heard clearly. The great Mughal Ruler, Zaheer ud Din Babar visited this place in 1510 AD. He ordered the plantation of first Mughal Garden here and named it as Safa Garden or "Bagh-e-Safa". A large single stone, elevated, carved out sitting place is also present in the garden, known as throne of Babur " Takht-e-Babri". Kallar Kahar lake is located at a distance about 135 km from Rawalpindi via Chakwal road. It can be approached from Islamabad by Motorway at a distance of about 100 kms to the south and from chakwal it is about 30kms to the south-west on chakwal-Sargodha road.

Greyhound bus trip through northern US: (7) Salt Lake City to Wasatch Range 2010-08-29
On a clear summer day, a Greyhound bus leaving Salt Lake City heads into a canyon in the Wasatch Range as it climbs along Interstate 80, east toward the plateau state of Wyoming. The rather irritable driver from Boise to Salt Lake City who considers himself a "never-lost" driver ends up getting lost while looking for the road back to the Greyhound terminal to pick up his forgotten log book is now history; he has been replaced by a compassionate bilingual driver with the stature of Vincente Fox who takes the pain to deliver crucial information in Spanish as well to Spanish-speaking-only passengers.

KHEWRA SALT MINES
Khewra Salt Mines is a salt mine in Pakistan, about 160 kilometers from Islamabad and 260 kilometers from Lahore. It attracts up to 40000 visitors per year and is the second biggest salt mine in the world. Situated at the foothills of the Salt Range, Khewra Salt Mines are the oldest in the salt mining history of the sub-continent. Salt has been mined at Khewra since 320 BC, in an underground area of about 110 sq. km. Khewra salt mine has proven reserves of 300 million tons. This reserve could not be consumed in 600 years even at the rate of 5 lakh tons production every day. Current production from the mine is around 3 lakh tons. The mine-head buildings have 17 stories, with 11 below ground. The salt-mine is 945 feet above sea level and extends around 2400 feet inside the earth from the mine-mouth. There are 17 working levels and the cumulative length of all tunnels is more than 40 km. Salt occurs in the form of an irregular dome like structure. There are seven thick salt seams with a cumulative thickness of about 150 meters. At places the rock salt is 99% pure. Salt is transparent, white, pink, reddish to beef-color red. There are beautiful alternate bands of red and white color salt
