Two decades ago, two million Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians joined hands to form a nearly unbroken 650 kilometre long human chain. It was a symbolic event to protest at their occupation by Soviet Russia. Celebrations have been going on in Vilnius, Tallin and Riga to mark the anniversary. Baltic Way (Baltijos kelias) - historical event on 23 Aug 1989
20 years ago I was one of a few lucky people who could see this amazing historical event (en.wikipedia.org happening from the air. The live line of people connected three Baltic capitals - Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn. About 600 km in total. It marked the 50th anniversary of the MolotovRibbentrop Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. The pact and its secret protocols divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence and led to the occupation of the Baltic states in 1940. We flew from Kaunas airport on a single engine aircraft AN-2. The whole video was about 1 hour long, filmed by operator Jonas Klemanas. I have cut 6:30 minutes out of it. This short video starts at Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (nowadays Kaunas University of Technology), where people gather to move to A2 road in order to join the protest. On 2:23 min. you may see all our group in the small plane. Later, on 2:54-3:03 you may see my house in Kaunas, Partizanu street and my 37th secondary school (now A. Stulginskio secondary school). Later on through the video you may see crowds of people on A2 road between Ukmerge and Panevezys. But sometimes (for example on 4:12-4:45) you may spot an empty intervals on the road. On 4:46-5:13 you may see motorway A2 under construction.

Lygiai 19 val., pasigirdus radijo signalams, šimtų tūkstančių žmonių grandinė nusidriekė nuo Gedimino bokšto Vilniuje per Ukmergę, Panevėžį, Pasvalį, Bauskę, pro laisvės paminklą Rygoje, iki Hermano bokšto Taline. The Baltic Way Part 1
This documentary was made with aim of being a faithful and objective sample of the events which occurred August 23, 1989 in the Baltic republics. This day more than a million people joined hands to denounce the oppression by the Soviet Union and call worldwide media attention. The treaty signed in 1939 by the Soviet Union and Germany by which the territories were divided was the deal which made that citizens of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to claim the independence of their countries. This act of solidarity, human and non-violent had repercussions worldwide. "The Baltic Way was a phenomenon which showed how three small countries - the Baltic States, regardless of their unique individual national characteristics, created a cross-cultural spiritual synergy both internally and between the Baltic States in the name of a common goal - to overcome the consequences of World War II and to destroy the totalitarian regimes. The Baltic Way is a historic symbol that is alive in the collective memory, enriching the understanding of the sense and values of solidarity and freedom of expression." This is a journalistic documentary based on interviews with eyewitnesses and supported in images file that tells in an impartial manner the value of all those who were part of the Baltic Way Producer and director: Juan Haro Simarro Voice over and interviews: Olivia Interviews and logbook: Elena Pereda

The protest was designed to draw world's attention by showcasing popular desire for independence and solidarity among the Baltic states. It has been described as an effective publicity campaign, emotionally captivating and visually stunning scene. The event presented an opportunity for the Baltic activists to promote their view of illegal Soviet occupation and position the question of Baltic independence not as a political matter, but as a moral issue. Soviet authorities in Moscow responded to the event with intense rhetoric, but failed to take any constructive actions that could bridge the widening gap between the Baltic states and the Soviet Union.
