It’s time to pause for the rest of the month, so I’m stepping away from my desk and heading off on a mini break. This will be my first blog vacation of the year, so although I’ll miss you all, I’m excited to spend time with friends and family and pull the plug on my laptop. I’m sure you can relate!

Outside of Rachael Ray, Tord Boontje seems to be going for world domination these days, and for good reason, his designs are not only beautiful, but appeal to the masses, which could make him a household name here in the states real soon. (Although, when I ask most of my friends (just out of curiousity) who designed the decorations in Target, they usually tell me that either 1) They never even noticed them or, 2) Target has an art department that does that stuff. I’m thinking we still have a ways to go here… Maybe he needs to be booked on Oprah.)
In addition to everything else Tord has his hands on, did you know that he is soon to release a book in the Spring of ’07? You can pre-order it right here on Amazon (I just did). Here is a snippet, straight from his website, which gives us a peek at what we can expect, “We have managed to create a comprehensive book of all activities to date. We have photographed all work to date in the forest, in settings and in the studio to create a spectacular documentation.” Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Published by Rizzoli. To be released in 24 April 2007.

Chicago-based Shawn Stucky rocks. I love his three-color hand pulled screen prints and since he’s color blind, I’m that much more amazed by his fantastic color combinations and works…

Paintings by Rachel Austin, on Etsy! Great art from a lovely seller starting at only $25. You have to visit her website, she has a beautiful portfolio, you’ll enjoy browsing it. Rachel?s paintings invoke a sense of untouched beauty, simple yet bold, but never over the top. I love the shapes and colors that she uses, and in addition to her oil paintings, she uses various other mediums, such as watercolor and mixed media. Her oil paintings are my favorites though, just look at these, stunning!

I only recently discovered the screenprinted stationery of HeatherJeany while visiting Craftland in Providence. Great color palette of vibrant, juicy hues and bold retro graphics. At $4 a pop, these cards are great for framing, too.

Young and Withit is a husband and wife team from Austin and they create these fun cards that are mostly hand screen printed using a print gocco. Gotta love a family business, especially one that seems to love Gnomes. Mad props to indie couples!

I really love these original hand carved block prints from Etsy seller Mayberry Sparrow. The Swedish horse notecards are my favorite (in blue, although other colors are available), I’d love to see this print on a tea towel, wouldn’t you? Mayberry Sparrow also does custom work, as she says, “I’m always happy to carve another stamp!”.
In addition to stationery, I even spotted some pretty handmade blankets. Mayberry Sparrow has a dash of whimsy to their work that I really like, it’s colorful and just makes me smile. In the end, isn’t that why we are so drawn to design of all kinds, because it just makes us feel good?
