William R. "Willie" Horton (born August 12, 1951) is an American convicted felon who, while serving a life sentence for murder, without the possibility of parole, was the beneficiary of a Massachusetts weekend furlough program. He did not return from his furlough, and ultimately he committed assault, armed robbery and rape.

Criminal activity and incarceration

Horton was born in Chesterfield, South Carolina. On October 26, 1974, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Horton and two accomplices robbed Joseph Fournier, a 17-year-old gas station attendant, and then fatally stabbed him 19 times after he had cooperated by handing over all of the money in the cash register. His body was dumped in a trash can. Fournier died from blood loss. Horton was convicted of murder, sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, and incarcerated at the Northeastern Correctional Center in Massachusetts.

On June 6, 1986, he was released as part of a weekend furlough program but did not return. On April 3, 1987 in Oxon Hill, Maryland, Horton twice raped a local woman after pistol-whipping, knifing, binding, and gagging her fiancé. He then stole the car belonging to the man he had assaulted. He was later shot and captured by Corporal Paul J. Lopez of the Prince George's County Police Department after a pursuit. On October 20, Horton was sentenced in Maryland to two consecutive life terms plus 85 years. The sentencing judge, Vincent J. Femia, refused to return Horton to Massachusetts, saying, "I'm not prepared to take the chance that Mr. Horton might again be furloughed or otherwise released. This man should never draw a breath of free air again."

On April 18, 1996, Horton was transferred to the Jessup Correctional Institution (then called the Maryland House of Correction Annex), a maximum security prison in Jessup, Maryland, where he remains.

Democratic Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis was the governor of Massachusetts at the time of Horton's release, and while he did not start the furlough program, he had supported it as a method of criminal rehabilitation. The State inmate furlough program was actually signed into law by Republican Governor Francis W. Sargent in 1972. However, under Sargent, convicted first-degree murderers were not eligible for furlough. After the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that this right extended to first-degree murderers, the Massachusetts legislature quickly passed a bill prohibiting furloughs for such inmates. However, in 1976, Dukakis vetoed this bill. The program remained in effect through the intervening term of governor Edward J. King and was abolished during Dukakis' final term of office on April 28, 1988. This abolition occurred only after the ''Lawrence Eagle-Tribune'' had run 175 stories about the furlough program and won a Pulitzer Prize. Dukakis continued to argue that the program was 99 percent effective; yet, as the ''Lawrence Eagle-Tribune'' pointed out, no state outside of Massachusetts, nor any federal program, would grant a furlough to a prisoner serving life without parole.

Horton in the 1988 presidential campaign

The first person to mention the Massachusetts furlough program in the 1988 presidential campaign was Al Gore. During a debate at the Felt Forum sponsored by the ''New York Daily News'', Gore took issue with the furlough program. However, he did not specifically mention the Horton incident or even his name, instead asking a general question about the Massachusetts furlough program.

Republicans picked up the Horton issue after Dukakis clinched the nomination. In June 1988, Republican candidate George H.W. Bush seized on the Horton case, bringing it up repeatedly in campaign speeches. Bush's campaign manager, Lee Atwater, predicted that "by the time this election is over, Willie Horton will be a household name." In April 1988, Lee Atwater asked aide Jim Pinkerton for negative research to defeat Dukakis. Pinkerton returned with reams of material that Atwater told him to reduce to a 3×5 index card, telling him, "I'm giving you one thing. You can use both sides of the 3×5 card." Pinkerton discovered the furlough issue by watching the Felt Forum debate. On May 25, 1988, Republican consultants met in Paramus, New Jersey, holding a focus group of Democrats who had voted for Ronald Reagan in 1984. After giving the focus group the material Pinkerton provided on the index card, most of the voters switched from favoring Dukakis to favoring Bush. These focus groups convinced Atwater and the other Republican consultants that they should 'go negative' against Dukakis. Further information regarding the furlough came from aide Andrew Card, a Massachusetts native whom President George W. Bush later named as his Chief of Staff.

Jumping the gun

Although commercials about Willie Horton were not run until the fall campaign, Bush first mentioned him at the Texas Republican convention on June 9, 1988. The following week at the Illinois Republican convention in Springfield, Bush began to press the argument against Dukakis by declaring that Dukakis had let Horton loose to 'terrorize innocent people' and continued support of the furlough program until the Massachusetts legislature changed the law. Bush again mentioned Horton at the National Sheriffs Association in Louisville, Kentucky and declared himself in favor of 'life without parole' for convicted murderers.

Over the Fourth of July weekend in 1988, Atwater attended a motorcyclists' convention in Luray, Virginia. Two couples were talking about the Horton story as featured in the July issue of ''Reader's Digest''. Atwater joined them without mentioning who he was. Later that night, a focus group in Alabama had turned completely against Dukakis when presented the information about Horton's furlough. Atwater used this occurrence to argue the necessity of pounding Dukakis about the furlough issue.

The fall campaign

Beginning on September 21, 1988, the Americans for Bush arm of the National Security Political Action Committee (NSPAC), under the auspices of Floyd Brown, began running a campaign ad entitled "Weekend Passes", using the Horton case to attack Dukakis. The ad was produced by media consultant Larry McCarthy, who had previously worked for Roger Ailes. After clearing the ad with television stations, McCarthy added a menacing mug shot of Horton, who is African American. The ad was run as an independent expenditure, separate from the Bush campaign, which claimed not to have had any role in its production.

On October 5, 1988, a day after the "Weekend Passes" ad was taken off the airwaves, was the date of the Bentsen-Quayle debate, the Bush campaign ran its own ad, "Revolving Door", which also attacked Dukakis over the weekend furlough program. While the advertisement did not mention Horton or feature his photograph, it depicted a variety of intimidating-looking men walking in and out of prison through a revolving door. The commercial was filmed at an actual state prison in Draper, Utah, but the individuals depicted – thirty in all, including three African Americans and two Hispanics, were all paid actors.

Attempting to counter-attack, Dukakis' campaign ran an ad about a convicted heroin dealer named Angel Medrano who raped and killed a pregnant mother of two after escaping from a federal correctional halfway house. Conservative pundit Ann Coulter argues this case was less relevant since Medrano had no criminal history of violent behavior and Bush was not running based on his work in the federal justice system. The controversy escalated when Vice Presidential candidate Lloyd Bentsen and former Democratic presidential candidate and civil rights leader Jesse Jackson called the "Revolving Door" ad racist – a charge which was denied by Bush.

In 1990, the Ohio Democratic Party and a group called "Black Elected Democrats of Ohio" filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission alleging that NSPAC had coordinated or cooperated with the Bush campaign in airing the ad, which would make it an illegal in-kind campaign contribution. Investigation by the FEC, including deposition of officials from both organizations, revealed indirect connections between McCarthy and the Bush campaign (such as his having previously worked for Ailes), but found no direct evidence of wrongdoing, and the investigation reached an impasse and was eventually closed with no finding of any violation of campaign finance laws.

Frank Conniff (born August 30, 1956 in New York, New York) is a writer and actor who is perhaps best known for his portrayal of TV's Frank on ''Mystery Science Theater 3000'' (''MST3K'').

Early work

Although a native of New York City, where he had accumulated some experience in stand-up comedy, Conniff found himself in Minneapolis in the mid-80's undergoing rehabilitation for substance abuse, according to a 2007 interview. He stayed in the city following treatment, working simultaneously at a fast-food restaurant and in local comedy clubs. Eventually he won out-of-town engagements across the upper Midwest. It was during this period that he struck up friendships with future MST3K stalwarts Michael J. Nelson, Trace Beaulieu, Bridget Jones and others, as well as Lizz Winstead, later co-creator of "The Daily Show" on the Comedy Central network. Conniff was appearing in a North Dakota venue when he was informed by MST3K head writer Nelson of his selection as the replacement for one of the show's originals, Josh Weinstein.

''Mystery Science Theater 3000''

From the second through sixth seasons of Mystery Science Theater 3000's time on Comedy Central, Conniff played one of the "mads" (short for "mad scientists") next to Trace Beaulieu. During his years with ''MST3K'', Conniff was also part of the writing team, and the individual responsible for screening and selecting many of the films shown.

Work after ''MST3K''

After leaving ''MST3K'' behind, Conniff went on to become executive story editor for the popular ABC series ''Sabrina, the Teenage Witch''. He made a few on-air appearances on the show, most notably as "Rootie Kazootie", a baby-turned-adult due to Sabrina's wishing spell. He later showed up as a writer and later as head writer on the ill-fated Nickelodeon TV series ''Invader Zim'', even making a few cameo appearances before departing from that show as well, marking the second TV show that he has been associated with that was cancelled due to conflicts with station management over content and creative direction, and the second show that has achieved cult status following its cancellation. In the summer of 2005 Conniff provided the voice for legendary cowboy Buffalo Bill Cody in two episodes of ''The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd''. He has made many appearances on 'Dr. Floyd'.

Currently, Conniff hosts Cartoon Dump, a monthly comedy/music revue that ends by showcasing some of the worst cartoons of all time, at The Steve Allen Theater in Los Angeles. Recently, fellow ''Mystery Science Theater'' alum Joel Hodgson joined the cast, creating his own puppet, "Dumpster Diver Dan".

In March 2008, Conniff starred in the web series ''The Writers Room'' on Crackle.

He has since starred in the computer game ''DARKSTAR - The Interactive Movie'' as both Navigator Alan Burk and the voice of the quirky robot SIMON (Semi Intelligent Motorized Observation Network).

As of 2011, he is one of the contributing writers and performers on the Jimmy Dore show.

Cinematic Titanic

On October 30, 2007, Joel Hodgson announced he was starting a new show with the same "riffing on bad movies" premise as ''MST3K'' called ''Cinematic Titanic'', together with former ''MST3K'' cast and crew members Conniff, Trace Beaulieu, J. Elvis Weinstein, and Mary Jo Pehl. Conniff continues to tour with Cinematic Titanic.

Paul Dooley (born February 22, 1928) is an American actor, writer, and comedian.

Personal life

Dooley was born Paul Dooley Brown in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the son of Ruth Irene (née Barringer), a homemaker, and Peter James Brown, a factory worker. Dooley was a cartoonist as a youth and drew a strip for a local paper in Parkersburg. He joined the Navy before discovering acting while at college. He is married to writer Winnie Holzman, with whom he has one daughter, Savannah Dooley (born 1985).

Career

Moving to New York, he soon found success as a regular on the stage. Also having an interest in comedy, Dooley was a standup comedian for five years, and a member of the Compass Players and The Second City troupe in NYC, as well as having brief stints as a magician and as a clown. Not afraid of trying different areas of entertainment, he also worked as a writer. He was one of the writers on ''The Electric Company'', which the character Paul the Gorilla was named after, and appeared in commercials.

Besides appearing in many movies, including most notably ''Popeye'', ''Sixteen Candles'', ''Breaking Away'', and the voice of Sarge in the Disney/Pixar film ''Cars'' and its sequel ''Cars 2''. Dooley has also appeared as a variety of recurrent characters on numerous television shows, including ''My So-Called Life'', ''Dream On'', ''Grace Under Fire'', ''Curb Your Enthusiasm'', ''ALF'' (playing Whizzer Deaver) and ''Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'' where he played the recurring role of Enabran Tain. He guest starred in other primetime shows like ''The Wonder Years'', ''Sabrina, the Teenage Witch'', ''The Golden Girls'', and ''Desperate Housewives''. In 2000, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for his role as an eccentric judge on ''The Practice''. He was also in the infamous alternate ending to ''Little Shop of Horrors'', but was replaced by Jim Belushi in the final cut.

In 2010, Dooley played the part of the head chef at Camp Victory, a fictional fat camp, on the short-lived ABC Family original series ''Huge''.

Paul Andrew "Andy" Richter (born October 28, 1966) is an American actor, writer, comedian, and late night talk show announcer. He is best known for his role as the sidekick of Conan O'Brien on each of the host's programs: ''Late Night'' and ''The Tonight Show'' on NBC, and ''Conan'' on TBS. He is also known for his voice work in the ''Madagascar'' films and for starring in the sitcoms ''Quintuplets'', ''Andy Richter Controls the Universe'', and ''Andy Barker, P.I.''.

Early life and career

Richter, the third of four children, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His mother, Glenda Swanson (née Palmer), was a kitchen cabinet designer, and his father, Laurence R. Richter, taught Russian at Indiana University for more than 32 years. Richter was raised in Yorkville, Illinois. He is of Swedish and German descent. In high school, he was elected Prom King.

In the late 1980s, Richter attended Columbia College Chicago as a film major. While at Columbia he learned the basics of comedic acting and writing by starring in numerous student films and videos. After leaving Columbia in 1988 Richter worked as a production assistant on commercial shoots in Chicago. In 1989, he began taking classes at Chicago's Improv Olympic. His quick wit and acting skills catapulted him from student to "House Performer" within a year. Richter branched out working with "The Comedy Underground" and the Annoyance Theater.

Richter's reputation earned him a writing job on the short-lived Jonathan Brandmeier television show.

In the early 1990s the Annoyance Theater hit gold when producer Jill Soloway staged ''The Real Live Brady Bunch'' with live, word-for-word performances of the '70s sitcom. The show was so popular that it attracted national attention and moved to New York City. Richter was not an original member of the cast but the actor who played "Mike Brady" in the Chicago cast opted not to go to New York. Richter asked Soloway if he could play "Mike" in New York and since Soloway had not cast a replacement, she agreed.

At the same time ''The Real Live Brady Bunch'' was playing in New York, two fellow Annoyance members (Beth Cahill and Melanie Hutsell, who played Marcia and Jan Brady in the "Real Live Brady Bunch" stage show) were hired as cast members on ''Saturday Night Live''. With friends on ''SNL'', Andy was able to get into the after-show parties where he met ''SNL'' writer Robert Smigel. Two years later, Smigel hired Richter for a new show he was producing, ''Late Night with Conan O'Brien''. Originally hired as a writer, Richter was upgraded to Conan O'Brien's sidekick just weeks before the show began airing in 1993, after it became clear the two had a strong rapport, something Smigel noticed after sending Richter to join O'Brien on stage during a practice run-through when the production staff was testing lighting angles and sound.

After seven years with the show, Richter departed from ''Late Night'' after his final show on May 26, 2000. He later said of the decision, "After seven years of being on the show, I got itchy. I have a philosophy that if you enjoy good fortune, rather than sit there and say, 'Oh, that's fine, this amount is good enough for me,' you should try and push it. You should see how much you can stretch your good fortune. And I was curious."

Television work

Series leads

Richter left his post at ''Late Night'' in 2000 to pursue a career acting in films and television. His first major venture, Fox's ''Andy Richter Controls the Universe'', was canceled after two mid-season runs. His next Fox sitcom, ''Quintuplets'', lasted one season. His most recent television series was ''Andy Barker P.I.'', which was co-written and executively produced by Conan O'Brien. In the series Richter played an accountant who could not attract clients. After a woman comes to his office thinking he is the former tenant, a private investigator, she asks him to find her husband who she thinks faked his death. Barker decides to pursue this job and becomes a private detective in earnest, and continues to do his accounting job, which seems to pick up as the series goes on. The series played on NBC, with all six episodes in the first season on NBC.com. The series was canceled after very poor ratings despite being named by Entertainment Weekly as one of the Top Ten Shows of 2007. He also had a recurring role on the TV series ''Monk'' as Hal Tucker.

''The Tonight Show''

On February 24, 2009 it was announced that Richter would be joining Conan O'Brien once again as the announcer for ''The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien'' in Los Angeles. Richter frequently appeared in comedy sketches on the show and often commented and interacted with Conan during the opening monologue; he was also part of the show's writing staff. In mid-December 2009, Richter also began joining Conan on the couch during the celebrity interviews, much like he did in his former sidekick role on ''Late Night''. Richter said he enjoyed having a steady paycheck again and not having to deal with production companies while developing television shows. Richter said, "Now I'm so happy to be back and making TV every night, not asking permission from somebody and waiting six months to get their sparklingly clear and cogent notes. And then wait another month for them to get back from Hawaii and say, 'Yes, now we can go make television.' I felt like a plumber who kept going into the building and saying, 'Can we put some pipes together?' and watching my wrenches gather dust."

''Conan''

When Conan returned to the air as host of his self-titled TBS show, Richter followed. He again reprised his roles as announcer, writer, general sidekick and participant in comedy sketches.

Other roles

In October 2005, Richter appeared in the NBC sitcom ''Will & Grace''. In "The Old Man and the Sea", he played an annoying blind date that was teased and misled by Grace Adler, who only dated him to prove she was not a snob.

Richter appears in the Fox series ''Arrested Development'' in the 2006 episode "S.O.B.s." He plays every member of a fictional group of identical Richter quintuplets, Donnie, Chareth, Rocky, Emmett, and himself.

From 2006–2008 Richter had a recurring role as "Sad Dad" Stan in the TV show ''The New Adventures of Old Christine''.

He also provides the voice for the character Ben on the TV show ''The Mighty B!'', Simon Cristini on ''True Jackson, VP'',and the voice of the character Mort on the TV show ''The Penguins of Madagascar'', both of which air on Nickelodeon.

Richter was considered to be a potential host of the classic ''Pyramid'' game show that was being developed for CBS, but was ultimately not picked up by the network. Had the series been picked up, it would not have affected Richter's role on ''Conan''. On May 18, 2011, TBS announced development of a possible new version of ''Pyramid'', again to be hosted by Richter.

In June 2010, he hosted the ''Team Coco Presents the Conan Writers Live'' comedy special for TBS at the Just for Laughs festival in Chicago. Richter hosted in place of O'Brien, who was still prohibited from hosting any television program until the fall of 2010.

Film work

In addition to his television work, Richter has appeared in motion pictures such as ''Aliens in the Attic'', ''Big Trouble'', ''Elf'', ''Seeing Other People'', ''New York Minute'', ''Madagascar'', ''Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa'', ''Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted'', ''My Boss's Daughter'', ''Scary Movie 2'', ''Cabin Boy'', ''Frank McKlusky, C.I'', ''Pootie Tang'', ''Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby'', ''Blades of Glory'', ''Semi-Pro'', ''Lenny the Wonder Dog'', and ''Dr. T & the Women''.

Other appearances

In July 2009, Richter played for the American League as a first baseman in the 2009 Taco Bell All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game. Representing the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Richter hit a home run in the game.

After the end of ''The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien'', Richter joined O'Brien on his Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour, a stage show touring the United States and Canada over the spring of 2010. Richter served in his usual role as announcer/sidekick. Due to performing with O'Brien, Richter was forced to drop out of the ''Jeopardy! Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational'', in which he was a semifinalist. Isaac Mizrahi replaced Richter in the tournament. Richter also made an appearance on the Disney Channel sitcom ''The Suite Life on Deck'' as, a non-religious hooded brother, Brother Theodore in the episode "Silent Treatment".

Personal life

Richter is married to comedic actress and writer/author Sarah Thyre, and they have two children, William and Mercy. Thyre was part of the cast of the cult comedy series ''Strangers with Candy'', on which Richter made frequent cameo appearances. Richter and Thyre also appeared together playing Hansel and Gretel in an episode of the Upright Citizens Brigade sketch comedy series on Comedy Central in 1998. Richter is also a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
